Is that the MKC acrylic case from Feng? How does it fit on the phantom?
When they design those acrylic cases, they need to recess the screw heads so they don't stick out like that. That would be quite annoying especially if your hand is resting where one of them pops up at.

dont know how you type but, my hands never touch that part of the keyboard. so, screws arent really a problem IMO.

Do you speak from experience?
i didnt mind them tbh. but yeah, they really are great cases. shame he isnt making anymore :(

Well, I guess you could just use flat top screws as there really isn't much room to recess the top of it. Just a personal nitpick of mine. Other than that, I think they are fabulous.
Yes. And yes. No offense, bud. Just a personal preference of mine.
or you would see jizz-like glue stain

I've been a bit worried about putting a black plate in a white litster case, since I temporarily have a Filco with white plate in mine, and it goes great with black doubleshots.
Should have bought acrylic cases for my phantoms and where all the 7bit layouts?
yes, really want to see other phantom configurations, especially ISO and 7bit layouts. There are no cases that fit a 7bit layout. I have the 7bit plate, but have no option to make it look nice.
im using a plu-87 that i modified i know it not one of those acrylic but at least its a case.Should have bought acrylic cases for my phantoms and where all the 7bit layouts?yes, really want to see other phantom configurations, especially ISO and 7bit layouts. There are no cases that fit a 7bit layout. That's your PLU case?yep a direct knock off of a filco. I mosified it so it would fit a 7bit layout.

Edit: Holy crap that F4 is as shiny as the case!

should be that wider key next to L_Alt iirc. Love that right cluster but not a fan of the million modifiers on 7bit.Heres my lame prototype phantom:Very nice to see the first 7bit layout posted. all 4 black ones are space and ive changed my layout to have a normal space now I still have the old caps on once I get the new caps Ill post a new pics of both my Phantoms. but for the mean time here is some pics of the first Phantom being worked on:Heres my lame prototype phantom:Very nice to see the first 7bit layout posted. I won't go all-out with the 7bit layout, but I am liking theprofosist's right side cluster. With layers enabled in the firmware, I could have the regular 6 pack and arrow clusters, and with "numlock" on, the right side could become a numpad cluster. That would be pretty cool.
Heres my lame prototype phantom:Show Image(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v519/TheProfosist/GeekHack/IMG_2292.jpg)
No, not the new ones you just posted, but the one that you made using the current Phantom design, below:gotcha you might want to consider the numpad from my newe phantom layout then.Heres my lame prototype phantom:Show Image(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v519/TheProfosist/GeekHack/IMG_2292.jpg)
nah, I want to have the normal 6-pack layout when it is not in numpad mode. I just reprogrammed my MX Mini using the Aikon client too. It is really easy to reprogram after you get over the initial hurdle of finding the client. We just need a firmware that supports layer.O ok i get what your talking about that wouldnt be too hard i know tranquilite had lockable layers for the phantom you should be able to do the layout your thinking of with that if you want me to throw and idea together for you I can.

Yep!
I believe you can, though the GH60 coming out soon will be in the 60% form factor.
I believe you can, though the GH60 coming out soon will be in the 60% form factor.
60%? is that just the main keys and like a numb pad??? (I'm guessing) they come as a kit?

60% form factor is similar to the Poker. No function row, and tenkeyless. In that size, it's also similar to the Poker. However, the GH60 will be fully customizable so you can program it exactly like an HHKB...but with Cherry MX switches =)
Just realize that most people think when you say layout you mean what keycode is assigned to what key switch. The physical layout is a lot more limited as there are just a few and they are set in stone.
Well, the Phantom was designed to fit inside a Filco case, PLU ML87s use the same case design. Litster did a small run of custom acrylic cases as well.
People are working on case designs for the GH60. Don't know if any of them will get produced.
Every model of custom keyboard is going to need a case design that will fit it. Then (like w/ KMAC) you may need a different top frame depending on layout to deal with winkey-less and other factors.
It's pretty much the same thing as HHKB in that pic, but yeah you'll be able to fully customize. If the GH60 project can somehow coordinate with the KMAC group developing this, cases and PCB will likely be interchangeable. As much as I would want to see this happen I doubt it will
Meh we just need to design a decent case
There's a new KMAC in some early stages....

That must be the LED on the Teensy controller.

Cherry DS > everything else
I dunno man. I don't care too much about the profile difference. The thickness, meh. If we could get SP Scoops, deh sechs.
Well, I'm just starting my Phantom project. I just put this together to get an idea how it would look.
Used a Desko set (one without RGB modifiers) and some 1x cheat keys. I put the Phantom plate into a Vortex aluminum case, which I want to have anodized to some other color than basic aluminum.
So this is just a first step:
*snip*
eth0s, how did you manage to fit a phantom plate inside a Vortex case? The Vortex case needs two little bends at the front and back of the plate to mount and the proper height since there are no standoffs in the case. How could one make it work? Some kind of 2-3mm of material on the internal lip of the Vortex case to lift the plate?
I rebuilt my R1 Phantom using vintage blacks and Dan's stainless steel plate. The SS plate is better than the original aluminum one. The board is much more solid. The blacks are interesting to type on.Show Image(http://www.knizefamily.net/images/pool/keyboard-phantom1-angle.jpg)

Finally done with it... for now. Currently rocking the Cherry white on black DS's with 1x windows keys. I think I like Graphite better on it though. Thoughts?Show Image(https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-RsVTDlutvyc/UTKp9SbxCvI/AAAAAAAAAlE/PmZaeHKibjw/s800/DSCF2088.JPG)

Where did you get that plate? Are you going Case-less? or is that the case?
What cable do you guys use for Phantom? How to locate one? @_@Any mini-usb to usb cable will work. Shouldn't be too hard to find.

The cable plugs into the Teensy 2.0 controller, which uses mini usb. What cable do you guys use for Phantom? How to locate one? @_@Any mini-usb to usb cable will work. Shouldn't be too hard to find.
So their cables aren't like Filco where you have to get into the PCB to do it?
Anyone put a small mini usb from the teensy to just sticking out a bit, then have a female end on that with another cable going to pc, for quick removal?
Anyone put a small mini usb from the teensy to just sticking out a bit, then have a female end on that with another cable going to pc, for quick removal?Ghetto mounting is never favourable since whatever mounting you use hasn't been designed into the case. It's something you've added yourself, and usually involves breaking the case in some way. Because of this, unless done expertly, it can be messy and insecure which is why I would never do it.

However, a removable cable is still a nice feature which is why I implemented a solid micro usb into my case like intelli has mentioned.
That's cool I was just wondering what other people did. I have neither a phantom or a case...yet!You could always follow this (http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=38674.0) if you want to mod it.

You need to make it within your budget. I'm going to get an expensive case for sure, because you want a custom case to house your custom keyboard, right?
true but i'm thinking I'd like something acrylic 8)Acrylic is the material of the devil. Smudges, smudges and more smudges.
Basically, there's no need for soldering on the cable, right? No. It just plugs in.

Hmm.. I see.. that makes it a little harder to customize the cable..How so? The cable is just a normal mini usb to usb cable. It is full detachable and should be just as easy to modify.

so here is my first phantom i built. it's my first board that i have built for someone else so i took much more care than i usually would.
- WFD125 Plate
- Vortex Aluminium Case - yes it's possible, requires soldering the teensy as close to board as possible and making standoffs to keep the board in place--i used sugru to do it
- Blue Switches, Springs swapped with 45g korean springs and stickered - Owner's Request was to have super light clicky switches and this absolutely does the job.
- White switch for spacebar
- Pigtail mini usb cable, allows quick disconnect.
This is going into the owner's own vortex case which is red and he has klaxon keycaps, so for display purposes until he gets back from a trip i used my black vortex case and my own keycaps
- GMK Purple Mods and Green Escape Key
- Cherry Double Shot White on Black (the $10 add on option)

How much does it cost to build a complete phantom keyboard (including case, pcb, switches, keycaps etc...)?
in USD
pcb 35
plate 20
teensy 18
switches .60 ea (depends on the layout 87x for ansi125)
keycaps ~50
case depends on what you get if you are lucky you can get a filco case for like 35
then you need soldering stuff.

Originally built by DanGWanG, springs modded by myself. Sitting in a Filco Multicam TKL Case with a nice Wyse DS set. Alpha's, numbers, and arrow cluster are 62g, spacebar is 65g, and everything else including mods are 55g. The Tenkey is a Cherry G80-3700 custom painted with some Krylon "Camo Green" paint that was extra leftover from when the previous owner of my Trek 830 bike painted the bike. I used some vintage blacks with some 55g springs & and it feels nice, the vintage blacks are vey smooth. I just have to learn to program the controller to my customization.

That Vortex case is really nice in the end
I also like the solid feel of the ss plate a lot.
That's some classy ****, really love that alot. Is that red esc cherry?? The one I have (from EK) seems darker than yours but it could be the light

Batmann, check the fitment if the PCB/plate inside that Vortex case. It's not a perfect fit because the plate doesn't have two 90degree bends like stock Filco plates, so you need this adapter to raise it up:

love the layout, are you going to put some plastic to cover the exposed plate?

No, I don't mind it. Plus it reminds me that Ctrl is not placed there, since my finger falls into that hole. :))
I had fun building Ray's Phantom. Once you get into a groove on the diodes, it's not that bad.HHTKL? :D
Here is mine I built about the same time I was doing Ray's:Show Image(http://i.imgur.com/yLPSnTH.jpg)
Mine here is a little different from the HHK150 from the GB.
HHK150 (painted black):Show Image(http://imgur.com/OKCS37t.jpg)
The one I built uses a 6-unit spacebar, and has a 2.50-unit open space on the right, with no holes on the outsides for switches in the bottom row.
I messed up my stabilizer spacing on this plate, so I had to stem mod my 6-unit DSA spacebar to make it work. I used stabilizer spacing from a Cherry 6-unit spacebar, but with a centered stem. The DSA stab stems are closer to the middle.

@MJ45: very nice! Did you paint that QFR top? What kind of paint is that?Yes I painted that with Rust-Oleum Universal Metalic paint and primer in one Satin Nickel. It turned out nice looking like a bead blasted alum. case. I just wet sanded the rubberized finish off and painted it, good stuff.

JD, please, this plate of yours - it fits into the "official" phantom PCB? They are selling the PCB at mechanicalkeyboards.com and I would like to know if it works with that PCB.
JD, I know we discussed that thing, and then I looked into my box of wonders, and I realized I actually did buy that plate. I guess I was ahead of my time in thinking it might be something I wanted. Unfortunately, MX... I'm not sure if I should keep it just in case, and grab a white Phantom PCB or what.
I do have an extra case that I could put it in... I think I will build it.
MK is out of Phantom PCBs? :/

Hello? What is the name of case Colour ? Awesome! :thumb:
after all this mess http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=26742.msg1075038#msg1075038 i finally got my 2nd Phantom together
The story behind this phantom is that it was built for the cheapest you can build one for. About a half year ago Amazon had some cherry mx blue QFR Rapids for only $55. i grabbed two. One of them i sold the PCB and i had all the parts, like the plate and case and i never ended up using the switches. So when MK came along and stocked PCBs i decided to make one using the plate and case that was collecting dust
The case is not painted, its white vinyl wrap. It looks better in pictures than it does in person, though it was my first try i think i can do better. The plate was painted white.

That looks great! The Toxic Set would be ideal on that.
Is Ono Sendai a brand of something? Or someone's name? I recognise it from Neuromancer.
Offtopic to the thread but could you tell me where you got the keycaps for your little keyboard? (the one on top) I really LOVE the font of the keys, that's the best looking font I've seen in all the pictures people are posting...Show Image(http://i.imgur.com/Z0qSEQSh.jpg)

The Ono Sendai Cyberspace 7 was the deck that the main character of Neuromancer, Case, used. it was apparently SUPER LEET and my 16 year old self though it would be equally LEET to name my ****t PC after it, and i've retained the tradition since.

I seriously can't get over how much I like this. It has a very industrial look and I've always loved cases with exposed plates. Even the finish on the plate seems immaculate.
Any chance we could get a few pictures of the bottom? I'm curious whether the bolts thread right into the bottom plate or if you used fasteners to sandwich everything together. From these pictures it looks like you tapped threads into the bottom plate.
I think she's finally finished. For now. I had to do a lot of mods to the case to even make it workable, but I think it turned out ok. Specs to follow.

Finished my Phantom build on Saturday (also my first full keyboard build!), so time for some pictures!
It has a stainless steel plate in a winkeyless layout, and it's inside of a Vortex aluminum TKL case, using Leslieann's awesome adapters to fit it in the case. White Filco-style LEDs, RainDrop R2 keyset, Ionospheric Blue Skull CC.
The case doesn't quite fully close, because of the Teensy on the bottom of the Phantom. It's open a hair, but it's pretty unnoticeable.
The switches are buttery smooth vintage blacks from an old Wyse board, with 50g gold-plated springs, soon to be lubed with thick Geekhackers formula and stickered with sky blue stickers (waiting for stuff still). Clipped Cherry stabilizers all around. I will be installing an MX lock switch in the scroll lock position, but I'm still waiting for the switch to arrive. I'm also REALLY on the lookout for 4 or 5 Nixdorf blacks for the WASD and Esc keys, but they seem impossible to find so I'm kind of giving up hope there.
I still need to pick a nice cable from Zeal, but other than that and the other stuff I am waiting on, it's complete. I'm not sure if I'm going to stick with RainDrop or use my set of Miami Odessa R2 when it arrives.
These pictures are crappy quality, so I'm going to see if I can get some better pictures later on.Show Image(http://i.imgur.com/EhSuxPo.jpg)Show Image(http://i.imgur.com/W6iShc1.jpg)Show Image(http://i.imgur.com/WLdzMeg.jpg)Show Image(http://i.imgur.com/X85Nofo.jpg)Show Image(http://i.imgur.com/PbRXSaw.jpg)

I'm really glad those vintage blacks went to good use. I feel bad for hoarding them for so long and not using them. Great work, meow!

I'm really glad those vintage blacks went to good use. I feel bad for hoarding them for so long and not using them. Great work, meow!
Wow, that looks stupid good!

Picture spam incoming! Recently did some work on my existing White PCB Phantom and finally found a good enough reason to assemble my black PCB Phantom.
First up is the black PCB Phantom. It's setup as ANSI150 with Costar stabs (it took me a very long time to find a 7u costar wire). I chose to install the diodes facing the plate to give the back of the PCB a cleaner look. I also took the time to flush cut both the diodes and switch legs to give the cleanest look possible. Switches are lubed (thick) 67g Zealios. Installed SIP sockets on the LED's. Placed into a Filco Ninja case with some pitch black PBT dye-subs on top.Show Image(https://i.imgur.com/7MfsPGN.jpg)Show Image(https://i.imgur.com/9Muudsn.jpg)Show Image(https://i.imgur.com/5pUuU5W.jpg)Show Image(https://i.imgur.com/jRxooiZ.jpg)Show Image(https://i.imgur.com/eQUF0rO.jpg)Show Image(https://i.imgur.com/N2GUSur.jpg)Show Image(https://i.imgur.com/8iuxQXu.jpg)Show Image(https://i.imgur.com/fTvTUZ5.jpg)Show Image(https://i.imgur.com/gi9OYYu.jpg)Show Image(https://i.imgur.com/N6dwYLy.jpg)Show Image(https://i.imgur.com/dYSv7wk.jpg)
A while back I swapped Gateron clears into my white PCB phantom after lubing (thin) and changing to 78g #gold springs. I cant help but to love the look of the all white switches with the white PCB as a backdrop.Show Image(https://i.imgur.com/2tqfAK1.jpg)Show Image(https://i.imgur.com/7jVt5Uk.jpg)Show Image(https://i.imgur.com/lGK8lNj.jpg)

Wow, looking great strict. :)
Where did you find the 7x Costar stab wire? :3

Nice!
I'm slowly warming up to the thought of building one of these, but both locating a case and Teensy programming are holding me back at this point. I would have thought the lack of soldering skills would have made me hesitate, but the controller and case seem bigger obstacles.

Teensy programming is the easy part. Phantom is supported in EasyAVR, then you just flash the .HEX with PJRC's Teensy loader. It will take you longer to setup your keymap in the GUI than it will to flash the controller. It's stupid easy. :P
As far as cases go, you could always make your own. :DShow Image(http://i.imgur.com/HS0afyg.jpg)

Not going to be making my own case. It is a lot for me to even entertain light industrial activities (such as soldering) without even thinking about things like machine work.
Good to hear about the Teensy. EasyAVR seems a lot simpler than the other alternatives I have seen.
Are Filco cases sold separately? I saw a lot of talk in phantom related posts circa 2013 that the cases were sold separately, jus twondering if that was still a thing. If I wanted to go all out (which I might), I see that mechanicalkeyboards has an aluminum case that's stated to be phantom + plate compatible.

I didn't cut those plates myself, I had them done at a local shop. It was about $65 for bottom and switch plate together including material. The other parts are just from a hardware store.
The MK.com Filco case fits a Filco, which the Phantom was designed around, so it'll fit a Phantom too by default. If you get one I would also get a plate that was designed to fit the Filco case so you don't run into any fitment issues. MK sells those too. :)
