Title: Looking for a new desk
Post by: digi on Fri, 24 August 2012, 15:54:59
My plastic folding table that I got from Staples for $30 about 7 years ago is finally starting to develop a sag in the midsection.

I want to buy a new geekhack certified desk, something sturdy with a fairly deep width from keyboard to monitor. Any ideas?

I have the perfect desk... except Costco stopped carrying it (my wife bought the last one!) over 10 years ago :(

It's a plain slab desk with  a separate 3drawer cabinet on wheels.  blond plasti-wood top, dark grey sides/back, 31.5" deep, 63" wide.

Plug the measurements into google and you get GeekDesk (http://www.geekdesk.com/default.asp?contentID=622) which is something I've been considering.  Height adjustable in use!  :)

The GeekDesk looks cool, though I don't think I really need an adjustable desk *yet*.

Just something simple that's not particle board garbage.

I think more details would help.  Do you work from home or is this just a place game/compute things?

I don't put much stock in the idea Desks always need to be labeled as "Desks."  There are many things that are about the right height and shape and often much more stylish and interesting.  If you don't need built in storage (I think there are plenty of cool side-carts out there to use, even tool chests work), look at small rectangular dining tables.

If I had the space, I would slide one of these up next to my desk:

Wrong title.

I have an old desk that was my father's from his office from the 1950s to the 1990s.

It is not particularly big, solid wood, has 7 drawers in the perfect configuration, and weighs more than I do (and I am a big guy).

Take 2 or 3 $100 bills and go to an antiques show or high-end flea market (you might have to do it more than once) and you will drive away with something BAD-ASS.

Failing that, get something at least 3 decades old made out of METAL.

Screw that new stuff made from pressed board and spit.

But look what keyboards I like. Surprise!

I feel like pouring beer on my chest and growing my mustache after reading this. Good inspiration to get a 400lb "man-desk".

But building it yourself is even more manly. Building your own desk makes you grow hair on your feet :D

This Ikea desk is pretty nice. I currently own two.

Comes in 3 colors, good size, great quality, and cheap $99!

If that's not deep enough, then:

Do we have other recommendations other than the Galant and building it yourself? Not all of us have access to kickass woodshops, haha.
