Title: CM Storm w/ Cherry MX Blacks
Post by: gorebrush on Fri, 24 August 2012, 16:01:18
Got mine today. Rather like typing on it already, though I am making a load of typo's with it.

I guess I need to practice :) I use some cheap Microsoft POS at work and up until I have had a Unicomp Customizer 105 from the US for the past 12 months, but the clicky noise - it's just too noisy and the keyboard is a bit too big.

However, I am very pleased with the CM Storm already

Out of curiosity, which keyboard exactly?  CM Storm has three keyboard models.  The QuickFire Rapid and Pro are certainly excellent, and I'd expect no less from the Trigger.

Sweet! I got an MX black equipped quick fire rapid today too! =D I have another with blues on it... It's taking a little bit of time to get used to the linear action keys, but I do like the stiffer springs.. /me looks around for greens.....

It's so strange how little things affect the feel of a switch...

What exactly is so special about the CM storm trigger?

Not much I would think.  I suppose it is one of few high quality keyboards that has a backlight and macro keys, and the price is good.

Hmmmm I heard blacks aren't very great for typing, too stiff.

I have used black switches for almost a year (stopped use them just recently), and I had no real problem with them since I mostly game and just write smaller bits of texts (kinda like this forum post).
If I had written some kind of big and long text I think I would have fatigued a little bit.

Even though I didnt fatigue really with blacks while gaming etc, now that I use reds I feel....... relief? when I just generally use them, both for typing and gaming, it feels so much better and smoother.
And when Im going back to blacks I feel in my fingers that they slightly ache.

OP glad to hear that you're enjoying your Rapids. They are the one keyboard that is recommended by everyone here and also on Reddit.

Once you get accustomed to typing with lighter keys, it's really difficult to go back, since you start losing speed due to keys not registering.

Hmmmm I heard blacks aren't very great for typing, too stiff.

I've owned over ten different Cherry Black boards and some of them were stiffer than others.

I've had a Filco Majestouch-1 that was stiff as F**K;  Also a Poker that was pretty stiff.

But I've also had a Tte Meka G1 that was so light and smooth I had to take the keycaps off to see if I got Reds by mistake.

TT meka g1 often comes up as a board that feels lighter...strange stuff that although I imagine it's down to lube or something. Since I reckon the cherry switches will all activate with roughly the same pressure.

My TG3 BL82 is tactile as the keycap likes to bind against the switch body if hit off-axis (Even a little) I am looking into lubing all the switches. The spacebar, of course, does not have this issue.

So, the switches might be the same (as, say, WYSE) but in practice it does feel different, due to other factors.

The blacks are working great, would be interested to know what Blue's are like compared to the buckling spring though.

I can tell you they're much softer than the IBM model M's buckling springs... Like fairy tippy-toes.

You tell yourself you're only going to have one nice keyboard. And then you start thinking about everything else you're missing out on, lol.

Yeah, I have the same keyboard and love it.  It takes a while to get used to the gentle touch required for excellent typing on Cherry keys, but they are very quick and fun.  At the moment the only problem I have is that I still have the habit of holding down the shift key hard and I don't pick my finger up fully before typing the next letter, so I often get and additional capitalized letter.  That's the downside of actuation happening before bottom-out.  Just something to get used to.
