Its still cheaper to buy direct from a Japanese Store using a Buying Agent. Though only by a bit (Though if you find a Japanese Store having a HHKB Type-S on sale, its going to be much cheaper).

An outstanding keyboard - the Type S provides a better typing experience than the standard HHKB Pro 2. I can't get enough of that smooth and precise typing action. No other keyboard feels quite like the HHKB Pro 2 Type S, including all the Realforce varieties with similar Topre keyswitches.
The HHKB Pro 2 Type S is a lot of coin for a keyboard, costing as much or more than many laptops, even approaching the cost of an iPad.
When I got mine last December from Elitekeyboards.com, they were out of the Type S with the printed keycaps. I had to buy a Type S with blank keycaps plus a set of replacement printed HHKB keycaps. The total outlay for the keyboard, printed keycap set, and Realforce 23U numeric keypad was well over $700 USD.
Was it worth it? Hell ya!
Besides my PC AT 84-key Model F with the large Backspace mod, the only other keyboards I use are a HHKB Pro 2 and HHKB Pro 2 Type S (each with a Realforce 23U numeric keypad for cursor control keys!)
I suspect many of the people critical of the HHKB for reasons other than the key layout and lack of dedicated cursor control keys couldn't afford to buy one anyway ;-)
