Title: Well, it was bound to happen...
Post by: SerenadedAbyss on Fri, 07 September 2012, 07:47:21
So, my first mechanical keyboard bit the dust last night (I have had it since the beginning of February). My rosewill brown switch stopped responding last night after I plugged it in from showing the red plate underneath the keys to my girlfriend via skype.

And of course I can't RMA because newegg won't ship them to my state. And I don't have a friend with a soldering iron. So its time to use my tenkeyless Leopold blue switch full time when I was going to sell it. In the meantime...

Can anyone suggest a decent fulllsize brown switch to replace it?

I would honestly recommend a filco. top of da line build quality.

There's a rumor going on that Daskeyboards is no longer made by Costar, which I have not been able to verify, but you can always send them an email.

Filco Majestouch with Browns or possibly look into Zowie Celeritas wich is cheaper but about equal in quality.

Im really quite fascinated by the fact that your Girlfriend was so curious about the interior of your keyboard. All of my Partners (some of them gamers) have made cold "so why did you feel the need to spend  150euros on another keyboard, was the other 3 not loud enough?" comments to my keyboard purchases.

Well, as long as they still smexed you after such horrendously "insensitive" comment, I'd call it even-stevens.  :D

Er... Actually, she wasn't curious. I just wanted to show her the red plate since its an interesting aspect of the keyboard and her favourite colour.

Also, I would love a Filco. But I can't justify that Filco price. I might just say screw it and get a fullsize Leopold if there is any in stock over at EK... And even though I don't like the cherry stabilizer that much.

Thats pretty sweet, taking the risk of ruining your precious board just to show your GF that you bought a board with her favourite colour on the inside :)

So with my taking a quick look online and without shipping costs included...

$99 for the Leopold brown switch "Otaku". The printed version is out of stock/backorder.

$119 for the WASD V1 keyboard

And $149 for the Filco Masjestouch 2 Tactile Action on Amazon.

Decisions decisions...

Filco Majestouch if you can afford it.

It's all about cooler-master. That's my recommendation.

If you don't plan to fix the Rosewill, you should sell it on GH or mail it to someone who will. I am sure there are many who can fix it, knowing the issues that have plagued rosewill in the past, it might just be a problem with the mini^USB port.

Full size? Filco MJ2, for sure. Best board with browns I've ever tried. Mine's been working flawlessly for a year and a half (although it's 87key).

Since you mentioned cooler master. I took a look on Amazon and noticed that the Quickfire Pro brown switch is on Amazon for $89.24.

Is the board any good? I have been looking towards getting a backlit keyboard and even though it is partial I'd totally be okay with that.

Its a nearly $160 shipped on Amazon... Even though I could spend that much on a keyboard. I'd rather not spend a nice chunk of my paycheck on it. Especially when I have other things planned that are coming up soon.

If You don't want to do the filco, then the only other brand that's got a good track record is leopold. Or ducky, if you're into that sorta thing.

I looked at a review of the CM quickfire pro on youtube... The backlighting actually disappoints me. I'll just probably get a fullsize Leopold Otaku. Since I'm really not sure where I can get a Ducky keyboard.

But I'm going to see if I can't personally fix my Rosewill before I throw in the towel just yet. It does flash briefly when I plug it in. So there might be some hope left.

mechanicalkeyboards.com amongst other possibilities.

It sounds like an easy fix. Getting a soldering iron isn't that expensive, either.

Though I think right now there is a sale for the Quickfire ($79.99). http://www.superbiiz.com/detail.php?name=CA-GKCM1US. That's $10 cheaper than Amazon.

You could also go topre, might as well take this opportunity to double down...

I mean, eventually every keyboard fanatic goes topre, it-s only a matter of time. You might as well NOT buy all the miscellaneous stuff along the way.

^x2 on Buckling Springs. My brother is currently looking for a new keyboard and I am recommending him either a Unicomp or a Quickfire Rapid with blues.

If we're going to suggest non-MX-brown keyboards, you could always hold out for the new Matias keyboard.

But..but..but.. it comes out of the same factory as Filco!  It must be good and Filco is overpriced, etc...

Seriously though, sorry for your loss..

Filco IS overpriced. this is for sure. You just wouldn-t hear about filco failures as much ,because people are too embarassed to report that their premo keyboard crapped out like every other hunk of plastic that comes outta china.

Lol, Filco is not overpriced. I am more than happy with the board that I spent £120 on and so are all the other Filco owners.

Actually it comes out of Taiwan.

taiwan is part of China, and the superpower said so. And honestly if you want to bring USA into this, how exactly is USA going to survive without walmart stuff.

And not to mention taiwan is like a walk away for the Chinese army, while the USA would need at least a week to gather up.

So... I just got home and turned on my computer just to test my keyboard ... and its working just fine ... which has me stunned...

It wasn't responding this morning so I have no idea whats up. But I'm happy that I don't have to spend any money on a new one right now.

The keyboard gods have shown mercy!
