Title: Switching the Switches!
Post by: JonDBurnett on Fri, 07 September 2012, 10:46:23
SO here's my deal! and not a deal for you guys so much, but i guess if you don't know it would be a deal to learn :p

i have a Das Silent, with MX Browns, and i would very much like to change it over to MX Reds!

Thing is, my little brother is now in college, and he wanted my Das before he left. (hes in his freshman year)  But he really liked the feel of the MX Reds i have on my WASD. So as a Christmas present i would like to give him the Das, with Reds!  Now, i know i will have to do some soldering, and re mount the switches or something, but aside from that i would like some sort of instruction on how to go about this! Any help would be great, and i know there is a lot of knowledgeable people out there that can help me :p

So, if you guys wouldn't mind....   help me? :D

1) Get black or red stems or complete switches.

2a) If you just get stems, de-solder all the switches, pop them open and swap the stems.
2b) If you get complete switches, de-solder all the switches.

3) Solder your new red/ghetto red switches in.

Honest truth?  If you don't have a proper de-soldering rig it's going to take you forever.  If you are using a manual solder sucker I hope it's an Edsyn Soldapullt then at least it'll give you a chance at not killing the switches or board.

Most cost effective method:  sell the Das, buy something w/ red switches
Least insanity inducing if you require the Das to have red:  pay someone to do it.

I could do it too if you'd like. I'll do it cheaper.
