While I was at the e-cycling place doing my most recent scrounging I thought of doing something like this, especially with the vast abundance of caps you could pull off the hundreds of rubber dome keyboards they get every few weeks for pennies a piece (they really just want the cables; always cut them before I can even get there).
Always happens... think you have a great idea and turns out someone beat you to it!

It's not made of keycaps, but pictures of keycaps. Look at the pixels. Also, that "A" is a dead giveaway. What is that, a marble?

I'd go with this. Each A, for example, is identical to all the others - same shadowing, same blurring, same slight variations in orientation.
Plus this kind of thing can be done in software - imagine how long it would take to actually arrange that many key caps (not that someone wouldn't, and maybe hasn't already, done it).
-
I support this virtual way, it still makes an intersting picture. Imagine if they were using thousands of nice doubleshots and dyesubs for this type of thing for real... out comes the torches and pitchforks...
-
Yeah, it is not as impressive as if the pictures were hand made with individual keys. We could do this ourselves.
-
Who is that lady everyone on here hates that was using cherry double shot to make some kind of texture mosaic?
-
To be fair, not all her keys were doubleshot. At least, with these pictures they haven't gained our ire.
This type of art is very "digital". It's just a methodology. Go find images. make them all small, run them though a program to sort them based on major hue (looks at the histogram, etc.) Find an image to make out of them, assign "hues" to blocks on the larger image. Publish.
That said, it's still rather aesthetically nice.

Very cool.
I would want a "real" one made of real keycaps glued onto a board.
Question is, would I want it to be me, or my daughter?

the amount of free time is TOO DAMN HIGH
but yeah. its nicely done
but you can tell all those A's are the same lol
-
The 7's are the real give away, they have dirt in the same spot on all of them. Still a lot of work.

That resolution

Just watched an entire movie using VLC's caca vout. It's pretty much the same thing.
VLC -V caca [filename]
I'm queuing up some Maltese falcon to use the aa vout next.
