Title: [IC] Star Wars faction key set
Post by: danielucf on Fri, 14 September 2012, 02:19:35: f/64 made some nice looking mock ups for a potential Star Wars faction key set:

The top two are mandalorian raiders in colors from Boba Fett, the second row is Jedi and Sith logos, and the 3rd is Empire and Republic logos. We would potentially have them done at QWERKeys in the same style as their Team Liquid cap that was capable of having a lot more detail to it than the Team Liquid double shot from SP. I believe it is laser infilled J series Row 1 (Esc, Function, Numbers).

At the moment I am unsure of pricing for the J series, but the K series of large spherical keys were close to the following per key:
50 keys $3.25 each
100 keys $2.50 each
200 keys $2.20 each
400 keys $2.05 each

If the J series is similar and we get into the 100 key range I imagine it would cost $15 roughly for a full set of 6 keys. J series might also be cheaper. It may also be possible to do each key individually if people don't want it as a set.

The logos may also need to be simplified to be completed by QWERKeys, or getting dyesubs from imsto. I'm obviously open to opinions to see where the interest check takes us.

Where do you come in? Write what you would be interested in buying, and give alternative suggestions. Maybe only one Mandalorian raider key and make it a set of 5? Maybe there are other factions in Star Wars we want keys for and it should be an 8 key set?

I'm not hooked on using QWERKeys, in fact I would want to utilize what ever would give everyone the best looking key set. This is the reason we do an interest check in the first place. Maybe we don't have enough Star Wars interest to do it, have to wait and see.

The Jedi starburst thing in the center looks like it would be a problem, and remove the circle and stars from the Rebel one and it would be fine. If go dyesubs, insane detail is possible and everything is fine then, but some of the color combinations are then impossible.
Definitely interested though. You should just make an order form now and if it has enough interest to move into payment stage half that work is already done.

This may be the route we go if we want to maintain all the detail. Unless people really like engraved and infilled. I think a mandalorian key engraved infilled would be cool, but the others probably dyesub. However as a set I think I would potentially want them all to be identical, but a set of 4 keys (Sith, Jedi, Imperial, Republic) and a Mandalorian key, or double set separate could be good also.

However, I would suggest that you get a red or blue Rebel Bird on white background instead of the New Republic logo. The bird is classic and more recognized.

BTW, member the_buff made better SVG files of the Imperial cog logo (http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=18480.msg357414#msg357414), after I had supplied him with a high-res shot of a screen-used helmet that had an original cog decal. These are more accurate to the original shape than in the mockup.

The C3PO doesn't really match the same style as the R2D2, but just consider them place holders as an example for what the rest of the F row could look like.

Either way I think we may need to simplify a bit. f/64 made the images so if he can also make SVGs that is another step we need complete before we can start getting quotes.

When it comes to the group buy I'm not sure I want to run one with international shipping again so I'll run it if someone else wants to handle the international portion. Or I'll step aside and let someone else run the group buy. At the moment with two college classes 40+ hour work weeks, and planning a wedding I just don't have the time to do US and International.

Post by: danielucf on Fri, 21 September 2012, 10:31:18: I asked sleabo at QWERKeys about the mandalorian keys and he is going to make mock ups of everything. Here is the pricing structure he gave me for a set of six keys:
50+ @ £12.00 each = $19.51
100+ @ £10.20 each = $16.59
200+ @ £9.60 each = $15.61
400+ @ £9 each = $14.63

These are the rough conversions that Google gave me and may change depending on conversion rates.

I think they'd go as dyesub PBt's better, but you're right: Some won't work, unless the colours are changed. I'd go for a PBT empire logo, though.

The alternative which I'm more likely to go with after seeing the full metal alchemist keys would be thick cherry replica pbt dye subs. Do take note that these are early mock ups and could be improved upon. We could move forward with these keys for the sith/empire keys, and maybe some PBT Dye subs for Jedi and Republic. Mandalorian keys are still up in the air. I think that is our only option if we wan the white on black, and red on black keys.

How does everyone feel about the mock ups and the potential for this set to be different key profiles? I imagine the QWERKeys could be either J or K series.

He just had them for sale for awhile then they disappeared off the site and I still have not found out why, but I suspect it was requested by team liquid. I have 3, and I gave one away, they look nicer than the ones from signature plastics.

I would not be opposed but what about those Jedi fans? Will they be happy with just a Republic logo?
I think that the jedi logo has to small of design elements to be done at such a small scale.

I agree, I don't want the enormous keys either so it would be cherry profile Function/Number row.

Yes. While the image that I posted had accurate dimensions, it should have been rotated 30°. I'm so sorry about that.

I have attached a corrected SVG. This contains three layers. The layer named "White" is for printing white on a dark background. The layer named "Black" is for printing black on a light background but does not have any black ring around the rest. The layer "Background" is just there to make the white layer visible.

I'm still waiting on sleabo to finish the other prototypes he said he would make, and to potentially fix the logo that was slightly rotated. If it all looks good I can make the group buy thread. If anyone wants to make simplified jedi and republic logos that would help.

But, it should contain the emblems of the two main factions of the prequel trilogy of Star Wars films. The logo for the Galactic Republic and CIS.
Aand, the logo you are using for the Rebel Alliance is actually the logo for The New Republic. Ditch the stars and the circle and you will have the correct logo.

The sith and empire logos looked pretty good, but I would still like to see an attempt at a jedi, republic, and mandalorian logos. One of the things I'm not too fond of with QWERKEYs is exclusivity. If we use them for these keys for our group buy then eventually the logos will be made again and sold on the QWERKEYs web site. You don't see Signature Plastics selling custom legend keys for profit after group buys.....

For the detailed logos though, dye sublimation may be the only way.

I bought a bunch of those. But what I really want is the Imperial cog in white on black as a modifier.
