I have had filcos (blues and reds) and an older das keyboard (with browns) and just got my HHKB pro and gotta say that I am now a convert. Love the thing. I have it for use coding on my workstation at work, but I would love to take something on the road with the laptop. The questions are:
- Am I missing a great small mechanical keyboard that would be good for travel or should I just get another HHKB?
- Are there good cases for whatever is suggested (or are the two at elitekeyboards the best)
-
I think it really depends on your budget. Potential candidates that come to mind are the KBT Pure or Race, for instance. But these are in the price range of 100-120 $, not comparable at all to the price of a HHKB pro. The quality you get is also in a different league, from what I hear (haven't had a HHKB personally, but I can imagine that there's a big difference).
If you don't mind paying the price for another HHKB, then go for it. But if you want to try something else to see if a less expensive board will do the trick for you as well, you could try a Pure, for instance, and resell it if you don't like it.

You could make a dox if you can get you hands on a poker case.

I would get another HHKB, it drives me nuts switching between the HHKB, TKL and Poker layouts! I will be getting another HHKB to replace my Poker this week I think.

I do like my HHKB but i think i have improved on it with my dox/phantom layout.

i thought layout switching might be annoying. i am newer here so wasn't familiar with the dox. looks interesting

Case idea (http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=34960.0).
-
like the case idea, and you obviously don't agree with the bad reviews?
-
I would stick with HHKB. Both cases are fine, but you can carry a bit more stuff with the tenkeyless size even though the open part with no zipper kind of sucks.
-
do you also use a keyboard roof in the case or the case is enough?
-
No roof in the case. Never even considered it. The HHKB case is snug. It will slide around a bit in the tenkeyless size case, so I would think that putting a roof in there is a bad idea.

Sounds good. Thanks for the advice. I think I am just going to go with HHKB and the elitekeyboard case. Now I just have to decide if the white looks mac or retro or stick with the grey

Always white!

White or Grey - I have the same question in mind and this is my first HHKB. If at night you keep your light dimmed, maybe white isn't a good idea -- but if you're already used to the key layout, that might not worry you.

For anyone that cares, I settled on another HHKB (going white cause I have gray) and I am just getting the EK soft case

Good choice!
