Hello everyone! Welcome to the auction I wished I would never have to have.
If you don't care why I have to do this, just skip down to the beginning of the auction (#post_auction) :) , or just keep reading if you are curious.
As some of you might know I like to give away my stuff because I think it's nicer to share what I have, and in the process create ways for people to feel even more a part of the community. And since I don't feel like writing wiki articles or taking nice pictures of me cutting up keycaps for science, I give my stuff away to people that make an effort.
Anyway, I have to auction off some of my stuff for a couple of major reasons. I'm sort of putting this off because I'm not sure if I should be doing this or not..
Alright. Here goes.
My dad has had a hell of a summer. It first started with a cerebral hemorrhage that put him in the hospital for something like a week. He didn't have any major issues, just a little bit of speech and some memory, but retained most of his fine motor skills. Not bad right?
A couple of days after he had been released he had another cerebral hemorrhage. This one was bigger and caused his speech to deteriorate further and his general focus to decline. He seemed stable for around a couple of days until he suddenly had an epileptic attack during the night and he fell out of his hospital bed. They rushed him to get a new image with CT scan; which showed that the bleed had either worsened or he had gotten an even bigger bleed and that he had gotten a new bleed on the left side too (left part of brain controls right side and vice versa). This hemorrhage caused major problems that paralyzed his entire left side, diminished his fine motor skills on the right side too. He was now totally unable to speak and move the left side of his body. His right side wasn't much better, but it was functional.
At the time of this big event I was in the states trying to figure out how to get back to Norway as fast as possible to take care of him and his affairs.
While I was figuring things out my dad was being moved to and from a couple of hospitals and then he was moved to a home for old and mostly demented people. I was on the phone with the hospitals on a daily basis trying to get a straight answer out of the doctors why they would just move him from their care, but all I could get was some bullcrap about them needing his bed for someone else that they needed to monitor.
After a couple of weeks without being able to eat regular food. They had to feed it to him through a tube. And without any physical therapy he was moved to a different facility that could deal with his condition in the right way. At this point he had lost a lot of weight too. After seeing a physical therapist for a couple of sessions he was able to start moving his little finger and a couple of his toes.
By this time I had gotten my ticket and was working on tying up all the loose ends in the states before going back to Norway.
In only a week he was able to start walking with the help of a walker, in a few days more he walked without the walker at all. When he finally was getting into a routine and was feeling comfortable with the people and the doctors, they want him to move again to a different facility. This time however we had managed to get him into a great place called Sunnaas (http://www.sunnaas.no/omoss/english/Sider/side.aspx). This place deals with medical rehabilitation.
I'm back in Norway by this time, working on all his unpaid bills and everything that has to be dealt with when a person has been unable to do anything for himself for a couple of months.
My dad has now been doing physical and speech therapy for a while, and is doing fine. He still has lingering memory, speech and motor skill issues, but he is miles from where he was after his major bleed.
He is now home with me in his house, but will have to have physical and speech therapy for quite a while to get back to "normal".
I'm not quite sure why I wrote that whole thing, but the gist of it is that I have had to spend a lot of money that really has cut into my savings, and not being able to work while taking care of him has been taking it's toll too.
It's something I would do again without thinking about it, but that is why I now have to try to get some money together.

Shipping information:
I will ship world wide. I am currently in Norway, so the shipping options are limited.
Our postal service has two international package offers.
One is around $62 if you buy their box.
The other is around $45 if you use your own box. Both these options have a ridiculous weight limit of 45lbs.
If I ship with stamps it will be considerably less. Around $15 for 3.5oz. Less if the package weighs less.
Donators will be shipping on their own dime world wide unless otherwise stated, so you don't have to worry about shipping if the item you are bidding on is a donation.

Bids will extend the bidding for five minutes for the first half hour after ending time. Of course, if there is no extending bid, that item will close before the thirty minutes are up.
Example: User1 bids at 5:58:59 EST. This then extends that item until 6:03:59 EST. If there are no more bids after that time, the item has found a winner.
This will also prevent sniping for the first half hour of the auction.

Yeah, but there's no such thing as too much turbo boost. Even if it's enough to cause mechanical failures, it's not too much boost, it's too weak of supporting parts.

I think that we can make sure that Glissant does NOT have to auction his pink skull. That is very special, and while I don't doubt that his father is, I'm sure we can help him so that he doesn't have to auction that.

I hope everything turns out well for you and your father. I went through a similar (less serious however) situation with my father. Two years ago this November my father fell from the front of our store, 25ft to the pavement. On the way down he luckily snagged up on the gutter and kind of turned himself on the way down. If he hadn't he could easily have landed head first. He managed to land on a leg and it compacted most of his bone structure into his ankle.
Thankfully we were close by and could be with him through it all. I couldn't imagine being stuck in another country during it. He was in a nursing home for a month before they could even operate. They had to wait for the swelling to come down. The entire time, there was a 95% chance they were just removing the leg. Once he had his surgery (thankfully kept his leg), he was in and out of the hospital and nursing homes for a few more months. Almost a year ago, things were looking much better for him (almost able to walk normal again) and him and my mother were hit by a careless driver. Ended up rebreaking his leg and hurting my mother pretty badly too. Two years later from the fall now, he is finally returning to work. He isn't 100% recovered, and will never be.
The way I look at it is that just be thankful he is still alive and somehow it could have been worse. All I can say to you is DON'T refuse help from anyone who offers it. There's nothing to be proud of, just take it. Some friends through us a benefit dinner to raise some money to cover costs, and even the local church's (none of which we belong to) prepared meals and went grocery shopping for us.
Hopefully all goes well with you and your father after this ordeal. I bet your getting tired of cooking 3 meals a day now... ;)

One thing I wanted to mention was the first thing my dad said when he was able to speak a little: he said "I want a woman" in French, then he said he wanted to go work out xD. What a man :)) .
And thankfully I love cooking, so that's not a problem. I do have him make dinner once a week to make sure he practices that too though ; ) .

Did your wife mean to draw a CC or one of Feng's caps. The eyes look like a CC but the top looks like a Feng cap. Either way it looks pretty bad ass!

Did you ever ask CC if you could sell a picture of his artwork? Not trying to be a downer, but isn't selling a picture of CC's skull not your artwork to sell? When I painted my case with a drawing of his skull, I asked him how he felt about it, and he told me specifically it did not matter as long as I never sold the case. While I'm sure he would be willing to sympathize with you in your situation, I think you should still speak with CC about his opinion on the matter.

Would someone be so kind as to link me to the artist's profile, so I can message them? I don't really think they'd be so horribly stuck up to bar the drawing, as it is for a good cause, and not intended for mass production or anything. But so the air can be clear at least and people can go back to focusing on if they want to bid on it or not. Thanks.

Even if CC had a problem, which is hard enough to believe, he would have zero legal standing to assert copyright over her drawing -- for the same reason I could buy pottery, paint a still life of it, then sell the painting. Do you cry foul when someone posts a picture of one of their clacks? Hell no. How about when they trade or sell it for a profit? Nope. Because they aren't doing anything wrong.
I've written about this before in the valentine GB thread. I honestly don't understand why everyone is so uptight around here. Its like the concepts of fair use, public domain, and citation with attribution have never been heard of.
I don't want to hijack this thread. I will not speak of this again, at least not here.
All I will say from now on is that I think that avatar is hella cool!

You can keep rolling them all you want, its not about posting the picture, it's about selling it to make money off a product/icon they did not make or create. Too be honest I could not care any less what you think, I for one, like my skulls, and want more to be produced and prefer that anything that might upset CC and the production of those skulls be resolved.
When is something considered counterfeit? Geekhack is a very close knit community and because of that, it is not about being uptight; I was under the impression we respected each other and our creations and as a sign of respect we should give the maker the OPTION to choose what they want to do with their product, and not make assumptions. Not that hard to understand.

I highly doubt I am a threatening force towards CC's well-loved and much sought after clickclack skull business. To ease anyone's worries, I have PMed him to update him on the "situation". Not saying you personally, but if I were an artist and saw a picture of my work being sold without my consent even if it was for children's cancer I wouldn't be happy, I'm sure everyone has a righteous cause and I could even support the cause, but the principle is that me being completely and totally unaware of the situation would make me more protective of my work, which could limit the outlets and manner of how I distribute of my work.

mushupork, it was a Dolch lookalike set that was called MO1 (mass order 1) or Round 1, but most of the information about the group buy has been lost. You might have better luck finding information about Round 3, as that is better known.
SmallFry, it was meant to be an interpretation of a CC skull in metal with glowing eyes. Pretty cool indeed =D.

Even if CC had a problem, which is hard enough to believe, he would have zero legal standing to assert copyright over her drawing -- for the same reason I could buy pottery, paint a still life of it, then sell the painting. Do you cry foul when someone posts a picture of one of their clacks? Hell no. How about when they trade or sell it for a profit? Nope. Because they aren't doing anything wrong.
dude it's an issue of respect for the artist. don't take it so personally and don't get so offended when somebody has the nerve to consider the artist's intent when duplicating or reselling their art.

I think some clarification is in order for those unfamiliar with copyrighted works and other situations that come up quite regularly. I do appreciate the contact, but before, not after the fact would have been more appreciated. In the future ekw, if you have an issue with something like this, I suggest you first operate via pm instead of airing it out for everyone to pick apart and debate.
I plan to draw a new keycap from scratch using a dragon perhaps. If you have an issue with this, please PM me about it. Although, I can't say I see much of an issue as I can't quite contact the people who invented dragons as they are surely all long dead.

Thank you for your consideration too. My father is in good spirits after reading all the well wishes and positive messages, and for the father of the ClickClack skulls to actually take time to answer here has made MY day now too.

I'm sorry, what? No one pointed any fingers at you as a bad guy, I think you are projecting here. It was nice of you to point out that CC should be contacted, as it was indeed a conflict of interest with his wishes. I said that I would like it if you PMed me instead. Art replication is a sensitive topic for many people and it is an easy gateway to many unnecessary debates, which can easily be avoided by taking the issue up in private.

I just came back from taking my dad to physical therapy, and I see to two new donations. I'm just shocked at how incredibly generous you are, community.

For everything that is more expensive than EUR 22 we have to pay import VAT. I think customs fees start at a value of 120 or something. It's really annoying in this case because most of it would be a donation anyway...

Icarium, is there no difference between gifts and commercial goods imported? Like here in Norway we have a $34 limit on importing most things from commercial businesses, but that limit can be raised to $173 if the package is marked as a gift.
And then we have the ability to mark something as less valuable on the customs form of course. But not everyone likes to defraud customs =p.

esoomenona, I'm not sure about the exact details of the badge, but it is more than likely made of some sort of plastic, and is thicker than a random credit card I pulled out my wallet.
The timer is the huge link that also tells you when the auction ends (at the bottom-ish of the first post).
longweight, I will let people bid what they can and want to bid. I'm trying not to make too many rules ;) . Some people might only have one dollar extra to spare.

I've been through a similar situation myself Glissant with regards to my grandfather in respects to helping my family tie up some loose ends financially. It was a bit tough at first but you will get through it especially with the help of this awesome community. In your post, you mention how your father steadily went from using a walker to walking with no assistance. I watched my grandfather move from wheelchair to walker and then to walking without assistance and it's moments like those that keep your head up and smile.

I do have to say sorry for the auction not being as smooth as I had hoped it would be, but trying to keep an eye on all the bids and the times they came in turned out to be a lot harder than anticipated. That's also why I extended the bidding on the items.
If you don't understand the difficulty then I can only apologize for upsetting you.

GMC, my dad is doing OK. We still have a lot of work to do when it comes to strength, balance, self confidence and speech, but we are slowly getting there day by day. He loves working out so he does that at least three days a week now. I am trying my best to pace him, but he won't listen to me xD.
Didn't I already send you a private message with the winners details? I guess I didn't mention that they paid , but if you received an email explaining who won with an address or to contact the winner, then the winner has paid.
That being said only two people are left to pay, which is amazing considering the amount of people that were a part of this amazing auction. And despite a couple of hiccups while closing the auction not many people lost items because of sniping and or other issues.
I want to take the time to thank everyone that participated in the auction, sent messages and said some encouraging words in the thread. You have all been amazing. And for those who would like to know where the money is going. I have already been able to pay for part of a huge bill that is due very soon, and I will be able to pay that pressing one soon after that. It's only thanks to you guys that this is possible. And I'll be sure to keep you all in my thoughts for a very long time. I am sure I will remember this moment for the rest of my life too.

I entered this thread, just curious, and skipped initial history. First I was sceptical about what people bade for the caps, next I started thinking that people bidding 500$ for a single cap (yeah even topre 3D whatsoever cap) should have any kind of mental disease. But I really wanted to understand why so special this cap so decided to read from the beginning... Finally I discovered that the people in this forum are just fu*ing AMAZING!

A quick little update :).
Everything is paid for, and I have messaged all donors the addresses and information of the winners. If you haven't received a message from your donor, I would suggest you message me. That way I can make sure the donor has understood that you paid.
I have packaged everything and will be going to the post office tomorrow to ship everything. I forgot to include shipping in the price in my rush to "invoice" everybody, but I won't be asking for shipping unless you want special shipping with tracking. Tracked packages are RIDICULOUSLY overpriced here in Norway. But if you want to pay an extra $45-47 for your package, then let me know asap.
