Title: [Shipping] Stainless Steel Poker Plate
Post by: The_Beast on Fri, 28 September 2012, 23:04:41
What you're ordering:
A 16 gauge (0.0625"), grade T304, 2b finished, laser cut, stainless steel poker plate. Plate design has been tested by alixinhzai, so a huge thank you to him for sending me the plate design. According to him this design should work with Cherry and Costar style stabilizers but since the material is .0625" it may be too thick to use Costar stabilizers since they require the plate to be .060".

Plate Design:

I did notice (Dan did too) that the plates are a bit warped/bent but it's nothing 5 minutes of hand bending/tweaking on a flat surface can't fix. I'm not sure if it was due to shipping, the deburring machine or something else.

--------------------------------------------------------------
Shipping:
I'll be shipping via USPS Priority Mail Padded Flat Rate Envelope. CONUS should be ~$5.30 plus whatever material I use to re-enforce the plates so they don't bend during shipping. I'm guess final shipping price will be ~$6.50

I'm not sure of international shipping yet. I'll be going to the post office to ask them directly since USPS online postage calculator is saying $17 which I don't think is right.

*** I gave the post office guy a standard 3 subject notebook since I'm thinking that's close to the final ship weight and dimension (close enough for an estimate). He said depending on how it's packed, ~$5.30 using the cheapest international shipping method. If I have to pack them in an envelope it might be more, so I might have to wrap them myself, which adds cost to the packing material. I'm tentively going to say that international shipping is $7.50, but that's subject to change.

I am NOT responsible for damaged goods. If you want them shipped differently, I'll see what I can do.

--------------------------------------------------------------
Time Frame:
Orders will be open today until 10/23, collecting payment between 10/23 - 10/31 and the order will be submitted on 11/1. The plates should be done by 11/15 for me to pick up during my Thanksgiving vacation. Shipping should commence short after 11/26.

I will not accept late payments and will not be extending the order. I will be buying three, keeping one and selling the other two at an increase price once all other orders have been shipped.

--------------------------------------------------------------
Payment:
Payment by Paypal only, +4% Paypal fee.

--------------------------------------------------------------
How to Order:
Fancy Order Form (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/viewform?formkey=dHZoZWE5aXFpY3d3X0lYSkZhVTRESEE6MQ#gid=0)

If you need an order change/cancel PM me, simply posting here isn't enough

*** 10/22 - Closing GB Sooner

Hey I'd be in for one for sure and up to 3 if the shipping works out to be alright. Also, we are only getting the 2B finish? Is the other finish or rather raw form (#4 in the picture) available at all? I kinda like the original stainless steel look haha. I'd be in either way, just curious.

Edit: Filled in fancy form for one plate for now.
Edit 2: What is the weight on one of these? From experience, anything below 4lbs costs about $15 to ship to Singapore via First Class Airmail.

I'm super busy right now, I'm doing a aerial robotics competition this weekend so I'll try to get a real price of international shipping sometime next week.

2B finish only, the only reason that it's showing the #4 is for a comparison.

If it's possible to cut the plate out of acrylic I'll be in for two (depending on any price differences there may be).

Same situation as for those in the IC asking about TKL/other plates then?

I might do a mix bag (aluminum, acrylic, Poker, Race, TKL.....) kinda GB later, after this GB.

16gauge works with costar my phantoms spacebar uses costar and it works it just a tad tight and needed a bit of lube.

I could possibly help you get a quote for the acrylic version if you'd like Beast. I think I can get fairly good prices for acrylic products with exceptional quality. PM if you wanna discuss this.

I think this guy only uses acrylic that he can source himself. I'll talk to him when I order these plates about more custom plate orders. This GB is to setup a rapport with him so I don't feel like a a-hole asking him questions every few days, ie become a paying customer instead of some guy emailing him for quotes

Acrylic at the same thickness as these metal plates is too weak to be of any support.  It may as well be not there at all.  My MX Mini has an acrylic case and an acrylic plate.  The plate is little less than 1/4" thick, maybe 5mm.  that is thick enough to be supportive.  At this thickness, you will also need to use PCB-mount stabs and have cut outs on the acrylic plate to accommodate PCB-mount stabs.  Plate-mount stabs (Cherry or costar) won't work, unless you trim them and glue them onto the thick plate.

There goes that idea then, oh well.

I suggest the use of cardboards, thick cardboards as reinforcement. The phantom plate which is made of aluminum has trouble surviving the journey without.
I'm not sure whether this is feasible, but adding some curves at the top/bottom sides of the plate might improve the strength and reduce any tendency to bend. Most production plates have this feature if you open your plate mounted keyboard up.

I'm thinking of using 1/8" hardboard. It's basically MDF but with a much higher density and isn't super expensive (from the prices I've seen online)

The plate is little less than 1/4" thick, maybe 5mm.

5mm is the exact distance between the PCB and the underside of the flange on the switch housing that rests on the plate in a standard plate mounted board.  So the PCB is helping support the acrylic as well.  That thickness of acrylic is pretty stiff, right up until you turn it into swiss cheese.

$17 is probably right for shipping to Canada using USPS priority, but try looking up USPS first class instead. It's what I always ask people to use because it's far more reasonable in terms of price. Just going to wait to see what shipping is before placing an order.

It seems high because I ship rests for $15 and those weight more and are bigger in almost all dimensions. I'll do my best to check on Monday

so here's a question maybe someone can answer for me...
i have a Poker, and i really like it, and i think having a plate would be awesome, but how do i do it once i get the plate?  Do i have to solder everything together then?  i would really like to get this, and add some much needed stability to this flimsy little thing (at least compared to my Filco :D).

sooo any help/response/explanation would be awesome :D

You have to desolder everything. The 7 LEDs and the 61 switches. Then you mount the switches on the plate. Then solder the switches to the PCB. Then solder the LEDs back into their positions in the respective switches. You can remove the switch tops without desoldering later, since the plate design supports it. You would just have to desolder the LEDs to swap those springs/stems under them.

This should fit the Pure, right? I'll check that all the mounts line up, but would I already know that the Poker doesn't have a center screw--would it be possible to have that added? I'd definitely be in for one if that were the case.

Edit: Just remembered my short right shift key.. Maybe a Pure plate GB could come around in the future.

Problem with doing this for the Pure is desoldering and resoldering all 62 backlighting LEDs in addition to all the switches. Much more of a PITA.

Yeah, it's not terribly hard, but it helps to practice (and to have decent equipment). As long as you've got all the switches desoldered and everything, you might as well lube and sticker them, as well. You did buy some of demik's switch stickers, right? :P Then mount the whole thing in an aluminum case from treble318, imsto, or oneproduct. :D Top off with PBT keycaps or some nice Cherry Corp doubleshots.

Edit: If you want a programmable controller as well, you'll just have to wait for the GH60 project.

all though! i want to try some Ergo Whites :p

Do you think this would fit a KBT Pure (without backlighting)?

Without modification, no. The pure has a short right shift and a 1x1 fn key that makes this plate useless without modification since the poker has a "standard" sized shift. I've designed .060" stainless steel window cladding and the production team was NOT happy having to modify pieces to fit (it wasn't too many ^___^ but they complained about all of them). You can try to modify it but I make no promises that you'll be able to

Np, I wanted a plate and would have gladly paid the $23 to get one. But I figured I might as well extend this to the community

Filled out the form. Don't have a Poker, but I might be interested in one sooner or later. I will definitely be in if you do the mixed bag GB for the Race and others. Also, I'm in the same boat as another where I will be moving. I know you said as long as the order is paid, it can be held until it can be shipped at a later time, so I will probably have to go that route with you. We can discuss that at a later time, I'm sure.

Yup, as long as you paid for the plate, I'll hold it for however long you need me to.

Just send me a PM with any order updates, I'll update and then you can confirm via post #2

BTW I did a little area/volume/density model. The plate should weight 160g or 0.35Lbs.

The little notes on the order forms are cute but I'll be printing those exact addresses, so make sure it's exactly how you want it.

Does that includes the padding cost?
I found that padding is really important. A swiss cheese made of steel plate is not really strong, and a lot of reinforcements is required

I was going to use a 1/8" hardboard (it's high density fiberboard) as a backer + a layer of bubble wrap.

Like I said that price is tentative but it should be close to that price

47 plates in just a few days, very nice guys
(http://www.reactiongifs.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/20120607035837_auto.gif)

I might have to close this one early. I asked my guy when I would have to order these to get them by 11/15, but when I asked, I only thought we would get ~20 orders. With more than double that, he might need more time. I'll keep you guys updated ^___^

Edit: I sent another email to my guy asking about semi-final pricing and lead times. He should get back to me sometime today.

Not a dumb question, the plate helps support the switch and make the poker feel more solid. It should help eliminate PCB flex while typing

alixinhzai has designed it so that it works with cherry (the stock stabilizer that comes with the poker) and Costar. However since the plate is 1/16 or .0625" Costar may not work since it requires the plate to be .060" in thickness.

Again, no dumb questions guys, everyone is here to learn ^___^

Anyways, you desolder all the switches, install cherry stabilizers, then install the switches back onto the plate and then resolder on all the switches back onto the PCB.

Gotta fix that, because doing it wrong is just too damned much work...

If you are using PCB mount Cherry stabs, install them FIRST.  Then install switches through the plate.

No, on the stock poker it's easy to change stems and springs because it's PCB mount. Once you make it a plate mount, it's much harder because the plate blocks you from lifting the tabs on the side of the switch (the tabs that keep the switch together).

Nope, the plate will look exactly like the picture in my first post (no brand or usernames). I was thinking of putting GH someone on the plate, but decided not to since I'm sure not everyone uses GH as much as I do or wants GH on the plate.

Unless everyone agreed on it, I think the laser guy would charge for a single piece to do it just on one.

That or one or other plate design wouldn't get as many orders and make it more expensive

My "other" vote on the poll:
Quote
I'm not very fond of the name geekhack itself.
But I'm fine with the initials (GH) or some random logo you come up with.
But it won't be a total disaster to have it written somewhere. It's under the keycaps anyway :D

Related question:
Are custom cut-out designs possible?
Own GH screen name for example?

Send me a plate design and I'll cut it, which could include user names. However I think the laser guy is going to count that as one piece even if all the plates are the same except that one thing

Adding plates of different designs shouldn't increase the cost per plate, only decrease it further. All they do is place the files next to each other. Stacking more won't take much time and will allow for the the machine to work a bit longer on the same sheet.

He got back to me on payment method, we'll be paying the state tax of 5.5% since I'm not a reseller or have a tax exempt form. He also gave me another quote for 60 plates ordered, we're hitting the point were they just don't get that much cheaper due to material cost. He's doing $10.50 per plate, no tax and no "legend" fee from me yet. The final price should be around $11.80-$12.25 per plate after taxes, my fee and PP (if I'm doing my math right).

I also asked him this
Quote
If I ordered 60 of those plates and one that was nearly identical but had a few more holes in it or a small text personalization, would it be $10.50 for all 61 plates or would it be $10.50 for 60 of the plates and $22.29 for the one that had a few extra holes/personalization in it?

He said he would do all 61 at the lower price. HOWEVER, this doesn't mean I'll be doing personalized plates this run (other than maybe poker suits above the spacebar). I'm doing this run to setup a rapport with him since I've been asking a ton of questions and am still not a paying customer. This should help us later when I do my "mix bag" plate GB that may include personalization. If you want to drop your order and wait for a GB with personalization, it won't be effecting price all that much, but I'd prefer if you didn't.

Sweet, while I think personalization is cool, how often are you really going to be looking at it? Plus, there isn't really a ton of room to put it unless we made the plate cherry stab. only, which I don't want to do since just having the possibility of it being cherry and costar compatible is pretty sweet.

As for questionnaire #2 favorite:
Blank: 6
Poker suits: 15
"geekhack": 3
"gh": 1

And almost everyone put "I will not be dropping regardless of final plate design". Since poker suits seems to be the clear winner, I'll try to have a mock up done sometime today or tomorrow

I'm making no promises about being able to use costar stabilizers. The design include the option to use costar, but since the plate is .0625" and not the .060" that costar requires, they may not work because the plate may be too thick.

However, I really hope they do too ^___^

The ][ is the part that holds the place, the u holds the wire.  Sand the inside of the bracket and the corners get weaker and may break when you install them.  (no I didn't draw all of it ;P )

Just needs to be thinner, on top of which it would be best to keep the all the parts (switches, stabs) on the same plane.  The plane referenced by the switches is the top, so make the plane referenced by the stabs the top.

It's always nice to have a soldering iron. I keep borrowing my friends, but I'm thinking of buying one soon.

Plus that person who would be doing the soldering I'm sure will be charging for it. So say $50 to get a plate put on, including the shipping. You could have bought an iron yourself, soldered it yourself and got a free soldering iron out of it.

I got the plate mock up done on Saturday and I sent it to him this morning to see if his laser could cut out stuff that small. The kerf on most lasers are .006", and the narrowest gap on the poker suit is .1773mm or .0069" so that's really close

Update: The poker suits plate will cost a bit more to do, about $0.75 per plate more. I'll be putting a mockup up in the first post and then sending out a mass PM to those who would like to change there orders to include this new poker option.

What is the current per plate pricing, and international shipping cost?
I'm considering on ordering more.

$12-$13 per plate and then ~$7.50 for shipping. But those are both "soft numbers" because I'm not entirely sure yet

Also, all re-orders have been updated, check post #2 to confirm

20 - $24.48
50 - $22.96

1/16" stainless:

It will be laser cut, that's just the quote he got from the water-cutting guy he talked to.

So it will be water jet cut, not laser cut?

I just sent a quote to the waterjet guy to see if he was even close to the laser cutter price. The thing is that the estimator at work said that the water cutter was often cheaper than the laser cutter but I guess on these small plates he wasn't

From our experience with Phantom's plates, laser cut is more precise, as the laser beam is a lot smaller than water jet's water beam.  At least for the 2 shops we used.  The first Phantom prototype plate was waterjet cut, and the inside corners are rounded.  It was difficult to install switches, especially plate mount stabilizers, without filing off the corners.  The actual shippng Phantom plates were cut with laser.

I would recommend using laser cut even if water jet is a lot cheaper.  Sorry if this has already been covered earlier in the thread.

They are being laser cut. The quote above is from a waterjet place that I know of just because I was curious to see how much they were compared to the laser cutter. Especially since the estimator at my work said that the water cutting place was often cheaper than the laser cutting place in his most recent quotes from both places.

It's much cheaper to use the laser cutter and like you said, will offer a better plate.

So the guy is ok with cutting 2 different plates without counting it as 2 separate orders? If that's the case, can we also sneak in a plate design for PURE? If so, I'll see if I can make the DXF file for PURE layout.

And I'm guessing it won't be a problem to switch from cherry stabilizers to costar stabilizers?

I'd rather run another GB for any misc plates that need to be made. I'm already planning a GB for the GH60 plates, am about to pm lister about Phantom plates and am going to do another IC for other layouts people want. After all that, I'll be running a "mix bag" plate GB will all those listed above.

Give me some time and let me finish this GB before starting another one. I'm sure there are other people who want a pure plate ^___^

Also, there are 2 plate designs to pick from now and if you would like to change your order, PM me or fill out the change order form I pm'ed a week ago Just a reminder, I will not be extending the order time frame and I will not be accepting late payment whatsoever (no excuses).

Also, I had a prototype plate made and it should be here soon ^____^

Oh snap serious pony is serious :O

I need to send payment by Nov 1st or I may not be able to pick them up during my thanksgiving vacation. If I start accepting late payments, I'll have to have them shipped to me and shipping 25 lbs of stainless steel will just add to the overall cost for no real reason. Plus I haven't gotten any new orders since the 11th so why keep it open? ^___^

But good news is that the prototype plate will be in the mail today and I should have it by the weekend. At first I wasn't going to do a prototype but since this is the first time I've used this guy (The company I work for has used him, but this is the first time I've personally used him), it wouldn't hurt.

How the switch tool?

It's 1/16" thick material so it's too thick to fit in the slots of the switch. A bit of sanding or a minute on the mill should fix that. But other than that it fits just fine.

Looks nice, very interested when you do a Pure plate, or the GH60 when that becomes available. Also when will the switch tool be for sale?

Pure plates should run with the mix bag/GH60 plate buy (if someone sends me a dwg or the GH60 has a pure layout {which I think it does}). I'm going to be ordering some of the cherry switch tools at the same time as these plates and should be on sale shortly after that.

Issues:
1) When he cut them he did them upside down so that when he "timesaved" (basically running through a surface sander) the plate he gave the better finish to the bottom of the plate
2) Burn outs (see 3rd picture)
3) Burrs

Solutions:
1) Have him "timesave" both sides so they both have the bottom finish or indicate what side is up
2) See 1
3) I could break them off with my fingers except the ones in the poker suit cutouts. I had to use a small file

The burn marks are standard fare with a laser.  The stuff that looks like it shouldn't be there is just chaff that didn't completely get removed, this is most prevalent in tight spaces.  A lot of times it just takes a little wiggling with your finger or shove on it with a micro screwdriver.

So no tolerance issues at the edges of the cut out holes or the 0.0625" thickness? Cherry specified 0.060", but it looks like the switches still mount on fine, unless it's because the bottom of the plate was already sanded down to 0.060". Maybe mount the whole stabilizer setup to confirm the fit.

The plate works great, switches fit and so do costar stabs. I haven't tried it with cherry stabs yet but it should work

Alright, I'm super glad I did a prototype.

Problems:
1. Cherry spacebar stabilizers didn't fit
2. Cherry stabilizers are tight
3. Costar stabilizers fit in the slots but don't work. The legs of the black part of the stabilizing system are deflecting inward not allowing the white insert to freely move.
4. Cannot open switch tops on stabilized keys (except the spacebar)

Solutions
1. alixinhzai said to flip the cherry style mount on the spacebar location when he passed me the design, I forgot, it's upside down. It will be fixed before sending to the cutter
2. I'm going to be adding a few thousandths on the left and right of the cherry stabilizer cutout
3. Nothing, it's due to plate thickness. You'll have to sand need the costar stabilizer cutouts if you want them to work. Sanding around the mounts should stop the deflection.
4. Nothing, I don't feel comfortable taking away anymore support from the switches

Other than that, it's a nice plate. Switches are nice and tight, it makes the poker feel much more solid and adds ~1/3lbs to the total weight.

For those of you that want to have all your switches openable with the plate, get yourself a file.  Look at the image of the plate, there's really not much material that would need removing.  There's always the chance that you won't keep Cherry plate mount stab compatibility doing this.

So, if I understand this right, you just have to shave off a little where I marked it red?

The space bar switch has the least support, right? (judging from the plate design)
Do you, Beast, feel a difference between space bar switch and any other switch when pressed? If not, why not redesign the plate?

Well, the spot that would need shaving for the best results are the vertical lines to the left and right of the switch.  Trim them so that you are widening the switch hole.  The only support the switch gets at this point is from the top and bottom edges of the plate hole.  I MIGHT be able to figure out how to do this with a pic...

How much material would sanding both sides of the finished plate remove? Not enough to fit costar stabilizers without further sanding right?

So we won't be able to open switches for Backspace, left/right shift and Enter, unless we desolder? :/

It sucks but it's only 4 switches vs all of them with a different plate design.

For those of you that want to have all your switches openable with the plate, get yourself a file.  Look at the image of the plate, there's really not much material that would need removing.  There's always the chance that you won't keep Cherry plate mount stab compatibility doing this.

Beast, you might ping Litster he's the closest up the food chain still posting that dealt with Phantom proto's.

And here's a picture :)

I do have a dwg of a phantom plate. I'll be using that as a reference on these 4 switches. The red part of your post is why I'm reluctant to change/remove them

The spacebar is the least supported but that doesn't mean it's weak by any means.

That's what  I was planning to do, but with the switch only being supported by the top, it isn't ideal.

The plate is .0625" thick, costar requires .060" +/- .005  thick plate (if I recall correctly). I can ask if he can sand them closer to .060" but it might increase the cost.

If it could be sanded to .060" without increasing cost that'd be great, but otherwise I don't mind just sanding it myself. There are only five switches that need stabilizers anyway.

Which is the better plate? the Poker Suit or standard? How do we order the tool?

When we add this to our board will it be as easy as a PBC board to take off and put on switches?

The blank and poker suit plate are 100% the same except that the poker suit one will have the four poker suits cut out above the spacebar. You can order the tool, I'll be buying a bunch of sets and selling them during the same time as shipping the plates.

All the keys will still be open-able except those 4 stabilized keys I was talking about on this page.

Good to know we wouldn't have to pay for shipping twice.

So we are able to use both Co-star style and Cherry style stabilizers?

How do we put on the plate? Is soldering required?

The designs supports cherry and costar but the plate is too thick to use costar on unless you sand it yourself. The plates we're ordering are .0625" thick and costar requires .060" +/- .005"

To put  on this plate requires you to desolder all the switches, attach them to the plate then resolder everything back onto the PCB

I looked at the poker plate and one of the litster plate dwgs I have, the stabilized key cutouts are identical. Did he have problems opening those switches? I guess not being able to open 4 switches isn't terrible considering other plate designs don't allow you to open any of them at all.

Edit:

I emailed the laser guy asking for final cost of the plates, invoicing should start soon and I might close a few days early to give you guys time to pay. I also asked about having him sand both sides, no. He said he could with one plate but the machine he has just isn't build for precision like that and it wears his machine pretty quickly. He said he could try to find precision thickness sheets but that's big $$$$ and would increase the cost quite a bit.

Edit #2:

I was poking around the phantom build thread and those 4 switches aren't open-able either on the phantom plate

Final quote will be in tomorrow, invoicing will start when I wake up/get the quote in. First round of invoices will be for the plate only. I'll order the plate, wait for them to be produced, get them around thanksgiving, pack them up and send a 2nd invoice (or mass PM) for shipping money.

I've had a cheap weller like this for a few years: http://www.amazon.com/Weller-WLC100-40-Watt-Soldering-Station/dp/B000AS28UC/ (http://www.amazon.com/Weller-WLC100-40-Watt-Soldering-Station/dp/B000AS28UC/)

While I would probably rather use the hakko, I'm glad I have this one, because I run my $10 Radio Shack desolder iron through it as well to keep the temp down.

Post by: The_Beast on Mon, 29 October 2012, 11:56:30

**waits for alaricljs to comment ^___^

I got the revised plates today:

#1: has been fixed and is working with Cherry & Costar on all places where there is a stabilizer

#2: I didn't do anything, they are just a tight fit and you may need to sand the cherry stabilizers a bit or push down hard enough to shear away some plastic to make it fit.

#3: Costar worked great. I don't have a caliper with me right now to check thicknesses but it looks like he sanded both sides by mistake. Your plate may vary.

#4 Not fixed and not going to. If you want to modify them yourself more power to you. But I'm not changing them.

I also flip the DWG I send him so he would be cutting the bottom of the plate and sanding the top of the plate. It's now more of the #4 finish rather than a 2B finish. There are some spots that the sander missed but it's nothing a bit of sand paper can't fix.

Going from DanGWanG's proto steel plate....

1: a touch tight, no big deal really very little plastic was removed, and only from the outside corners.
2: not at all tight for the 2x, you just have to know how to finesse it or get lucky slipping it in ;)
3: no Costar's on hand
4: Haven't gotten that far tonight

#1 was specific to the poker plate since the spacebar stabilizer cutout was upside down. The long leg was up when it should have been down

#2 I'm a forcefall beast with little finesse :(

No, It's only 4 switches that you would have desolder to change stems. It's not that many and I'd rather not lose integrity around those 4 switches just to have the ability to change stems (how often do you really do that?)

I don't understand why we don't use the fixed dwg file?
Those 4 switch holes in questions do have the same plate support as the space bar switch. And The_Beast confirmed it doesn't feel inferior compared to the normal switches.
So why not make this?
Title: Re: [Closed - Order Sent] Stainless Steel Poker Plate - See Post #2 For Order Status

It's only 4 switches, if you want to mod the plate after you get it, you're more than welcome to do so.

Where did you get that originally?

alixinhzai gave it to me and I fixed the spacebar issue and sent it back to alixinhzai. I'm assuming that alixinhzai based his original drawing off of a phantom plate, while also had problems with those 4 switches.

Oh, c'mon, you know what I mean.
At first you had the argument you didn't want to take away plate support. But then you dismantled this argument yourself.
So again, what's holding you back?
(not trying to aggressively get you to do this, just want an answer ;) )

@esoomenona
It's not about the amount of switches. Even if it's only one single switch, you have to desolder and solder again, just for a single stem/spring/sticker/lubrication. So we have the possibility to avoid this.
As someone who does a lot on my Poker (and it being my first option to test out all the things) I want to change things quickly. I think that's understandable.

What's holding me back is I sent the plates into be cut 11/1 so it's a bit late to make revisions since they may be cut already. They'll for sure be done on Friday.

But whatever, if they are done already or soon to be done, it doesn't really matter now anyway.

I'll just have to work on them by myself then.

The spacebar and the 4 keys that have stabilizers are totally different beasts. The spacebars has a ton of room to the left and right to have the gaps that make it possible to remove the top. On the 4 keys that aren't open-able, they are very tightly spaced so there isn't room to keep the gap without losing integrity for the switch.

Anyways, you'll be desoldering all of your switches to install this plate, modding 16 tiny tabs shouldn't be a huge deal ^___^

I'll be using a bend sander and a vise to bend these. It shouldn't take super long but it will still take some time to do. And I won't be able to start until I get back to school on Monday.

I'll be sorting plates today and tomorrow. I need to get a final weight for shipping and then set up a CSV file so I can print off labels.

You wrong son

alixinhzai designed and ordered 3 stainless steel filco plates. TheProfosist ordered 3 of them too. I'd rather have them tested by TheProfosist and alixinhzai before I do anything else with it since I don't have a filco TKL to  test it out on

Well, I think I'm going to send out a mass PM to everyone who ordered with a shipping and handling amount that they send to my PP account. Then if you want a switch top remover tool then just add $6 per set to the shipping+handling amount. In the notes tell my how many sets you ordered and if you have any changes in shipping address.

Right now, I'm thinking I'll start shipping some time next week if I have time. I still need to buy and cut high density fiberboard to use as a backing so that the plates don't bend too much during shipping. Plus sand and bend the switch top tools since I'm pretty sure that everyone who ordered a plate will want a pair

Also, I wanted to mention that the plates are slightly bent. I'm pretty sure it's because he has to clean the burrs off the back side and he uses a large belt driven belt sander that gives the plates a gentle curve. But its' nothing 2 minutes and a flat table can't fix. I also noticed that in the poker suits, some of them didn't turn out super great. Where the two upturned legs are on the spades and clubs are still attached to one another or are slightly mis-shapened. :(

You wrong son

alixinhzai designed and ordered 3 stainless steel filco plates. TheProfosist ordered 3 of them too. I'd rather have them tested by TheProfosist and alixinhzai before I do anything else with it since I don't have a filco TKL to  test it out on

My bad. I wasn't aware of the others besides the Phantom and WFD's Universal. I will test one if you need testers. I have a Filco TKL I was trying to sell, but it looks like I will just do a switch swap.

No it's fine. No one knew that I was doing another TKL plate except those two since I didn't want to release an untested plate to a mass audience.

Even though I didn't get in on this Poker plate GB, I'm still hugely interested in the switch top removal tool (saw/filled out the old IC thread). Hope to hear more about where any extras go soon!

Got my plate last night. Feels heavy and solid. It was a good idea to flip the DWG file around so that top could be sanded. There were a lot less metal shavings and debris compared to my TKL plate, so it's ready to have switches dropped in without having to file the inside cuts. Here's a few other comments:

Top shot of the full plate.
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v288/WhiteFireDragon/keyboard/th_IMG_1812.jpg) (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v288/WhiteFireDragon/keyboard/IMG_1812.jpg)

Details and surface came out pretty nice.
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v288/WhiteFireDragon/keyboard/th_IMG_1813.jpg) (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v288/WhiteFireDragon/keyboard/IMG_1813.jpg)

The bottom of the plate as these blow-out marks on every cutout. You can sand these out yourself, but it's the bottom so it doesn't matter.
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v288/WhiteFireDragon/keyboard/th_IMG_1817.jpg) (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v288/WhiteFireDragon/keyboard/IMG_1817.jpg)

There's a noticeable bend to the plate. Since the plate is so stiff, you will probably have to unbend it, otherwise it might flex the PCB or put pressure on the standoff/screws if you try to screw it down anyways.
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v288/WhiteFireDragon/keyboard/th_IMG_1810.jpg) (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v288/WhiteFireDragon/keyboard/IMG_1810.jpg) (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v288/WhiteFireDragon/keyboard/th_IMG_1811.jpg) (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v288/WhiteFireDragon/keyboard/IMG_1811.jpg)

I put it on the edge of the table and pushed down, opposite of the bend, and 5 minutes later it's flat again.

Just so there’s no jelly flying around, I did not get any special treatment on getting this plate first while nobody else has it shipped yet. I paid for medium flat rate box and it was shipped along with my TKL prototype. I don’t even own this plate, just helping some people install and mod their pokers.

Yup, WFD ordered an aluminum plate and paid for it to be shipped at the same time that he bought a plate. The reason he got a poker plate is because he's soldering it on for someone and it was just convenient to throw it in the same box because it was going to him anyways.

I'll send out shipping invoices soon, but I have some bad news for international. For some reason the guy at my local post office said that international shipping would be around $10, but when I shipped WFD's plate, I asked again and the cheapest was ~$15 and ~$17 for priority mail.

I still need to sand down the switch top removers, I would have tonight but the guy who runs the lab I was going to do it in had a meeting. I'll try to get them done tomorrow if I can.

I also fixed the status list so it doesn't show PP emails. Sorry about that :(

The plate weighs 5.24oz. Shipping it international in a USPS flat rate envelope is $17. Your best bet is to package it in a normal padded envelope and shipping it by first class since it's the cheapest and under 4 pound. If you including packaging, it should be around 6oz package for 1 plate, so first class international for that is about $7. You'd save on shipping cost, but it's a real hassle for first class international because they won't allow you to do it online. You have to handwrite the customs forms and wait at the post office to pay for it.
Title: Re: [Closed] Stainless Steel Poker Plate
Post by: jdcarpe on Tue, 27 November 2012, 17:48:08
For int'l shipping, anything under 4 lbs will be cheaper to use your own packaging. Over that, Priority Flat Rate becomes the wiser choice. There is no tracking available for First Class int'l shipping, and it takes a bit longer, but it's also far more economical than either Priority or Express.

Ok so when I sent your plate, the guy behind the counter didn't think of first class.

Well, I'm really glad I bought some brown packing paper back with me. Would it be alright to just wrap the priority envelopes in brown wrapping paper and call it a day?

Technically, that would be considered fraud. The cost of those envelopes in factored into the price of the postage for them. Not to say that it has never happend, but just FYI.
Title: Re: [Closed] Stainless Steel Poker Plate
Post by: The_Beast on Tue, 27 November 2012, 17:59:36
That's what I figured :(

I might just wrap them in paper without any kind of bubble wrap then, they are re-enforced with 1/4" MDF anyways. Now what do I do with 30 envelopes I can't use :(

Just take them back to the post office. :)

Do you think it will be fine just warping them in thick-ish construction/packing paper for international? Like WFD said, they are thick, heavy and shouldn't bend. I don't think they'll dent since the backer board is over sized around all the edges of the plate and it is steel.

USPS is pretty strict on using their priority shipping supplies for your own uses. One time I shipped something in a fedex box that was turned inside out, and they though I used their flat rate boxes turned inside out so instead of delivering to the receiver, they returned the package to me a week later. I had to take the package back to the post office to prove to the clerk it wasn't ther priority box flipped inside out.

If they suspect the dimensions of the envelope is their flat rate envelope, they might return it to you and you'll have to pay again to reship in the proper packaging. If the brown wrapping slightly rips because of bad handling and the USPS envelope is visible, they're return to you for sure. Most likely you'll get away with it though, but I won't get into the ethics of trying to cheat them. Padded envelopes that can fit this plate are like 50cents each at walmart or ebay.

I just modded this plate yesterday so all stabilizer switch can now be removed without desoldering. You basically have to file down the part circled in red because you can see that it's blocking about half of the switch clip. Power tools would probably be best. You can try with manual filers, but this plate is steel so that might take a long time, assuming your filer is small enough to fit in the hole.

I'm installing the plate for someone and modded it without his consent, so I hope he's fine with it haha

Lazer cutting generates heat and warps material. There are burrs and if sent through a time saver (large surface sander-finisher) the material can be under specs in areas where the burrs were present, more so if burrs were down on first pass(es) which would be uncommon.

Theese look pretty nice imo :)

my poker plate is gone to shadewolf.

I ripped up about an inch of the track and the metal ring on the pcb that goes to the space bar switch. I know this is repairable but not by me, and the thought of paying someone here to fix it or install the plate did cross my mind, but it would be prohibitively expensive for me right now

btw I don't really have any experience soldering but this stuff was so hard to get off, I would have moved on my plate even if this hadn't happened, there is no way I would be able to remove every switch on a whole keyboard without destroying it, either accidentally or in a fit of rage

Pics time.

I purchased two plates with the intention of sanding them down to use costar stabilizers. One plate is definitely going to require demilling or filing to fit switches due to bad cuts. Because I am sanding them down anyways this isn't a big deal to me.

I started off using 40 grit, moved to 80, 220, then 400 to try different finishes. I like the texture of 80 grit the most. here is a pic of it with low light and flash to show texture.

Just a reminder, when you install these bad boys, think about what you're doing for stabilizers. I had planned to use some plate mount Cherry stabs with mine, but I forgot to push them thru the back of the plate before installing to the PCB and soldering all the switches. So I ended up using Costar stabs, since that was the only option I had without desoldering all the switches again. If you use the stock PCB mount Cherry stabs, don't forget to mount them to the PCB before mounting the plate.

This in an aluminum case makes for a very solid feeling Poker. What PCB flex?? :P

Would someone please modify the first msg to explain what the purpose of a Poker plate is?

What does a Poker Plate give you that you don't get with a random keyboard plate?

All I see are some nice pics of a hunk of metal made to hold Cherry switches but nothing about how this hunk of metal is better than the hunks of metal we already all have in our keyboards?

We don't have one in our Pokers Sir ;)
This one is especially made for the KBC x Poker ("PCB-mounted" Board), in order to make it "Plate-mounted".

The reason is called a "poker plate" is because it's a plate for the KBC poker. Poker is the name of the keyboard that the plate is used on. The plate makes the keyboard feel more solid since it doesn't allow the PCB to flex as much or at all.

I'll be shipping the majority of the international orders tomorrow, I didn't have enough customs forms to send them all out tomorrow. All Conus should be going out as well.

I got mine on Friday...thanks again, Beast!  These turned out nice, and it'll add some much needed weight to my wood case prototype - I look forward to getting one for the GH60 ;D  Also, the switch tools are way better than my paperclip rig for sure.  Now to find time for the disassemble/reassemble process...

Got mine yesterday! Is anyone planning on painting theirs?

I think it looks nice with the raw brushed finish.  For anyone considering painting them, the switches are already a snug fit, so you'd need to make sure the inner spaces touching the switch housing aren't coated (or sand them down manually afterwards).

Wonder if it will fit the GH60 as well...

If you want to do a standard ANSI 125 layout on the GH60 it will. But some of the switches are rotated, so they will fit in the holes in the plate, but you lose the ability to open those without desoldering first.

Guess Id simply file additional gaps in for the rotated switches... if we actually go with rotated switches for the final board ;)

Finally got around to putting this in my poker. Unfortunately the space bar stab is one of those bendy cherry ones and it soooo doesn't work (did I put the wire in upside down? Don't remember). So rather than toss my now pretty hefty pcb at the nearest wall, I set it aside to be once again desoldered in its entirety.  Once I cool off a bit first. Maybe 5 days or so. So rather than toss my now pretty hefty pcb at the nearest wall, I set it aside to be once again desoldered in its entirety.  Once I cool off a bit first. Maybe 5 days or so.

Boooo

I had the same problem after I installed my plate. I ended up taking a pair of snips to the cherry stabilizer to avoid having to unsolder the switches again. I replaced it with a costar stab, of course that lead to a problem with the backlight led. :) I ended up de-solder the led and sanding it down a bit to get it to fit with the costar stab.

I'm trying figure out shortcuts to avoid desoldering but I'm just gonna have to nut up and do it. You may see a WTB thread going up for a new poker PCB once I'm through with this thing haha. Plates are a pain in the ass but in the end it's going to be worth the effort.

EDIT: I'm too impatient to wait for costar stabs haha

Lurch was selling this plate installed in a poker, but it's too late now as it was sold like a day ago? These are very hard to come by (personal exp), or it could be just that I'm very unlucky because it took me quite a long time to get it.

Unfortunately I don't think that we're going to see another 60% plate GB until the GH60 rev 3 is released to the public and we have third parties doing runs of PCBs and plates.
