Hey I'd be in for one for sure and up to 3 if the shipping works out to be alright. Also, we are only getting the 2B finish? Is the other finish or rather raw form (#4 in the picture) available at all? I kinda like the original stainless steel look haha. I'd be in either way, just curious.
Edit: Filled in fancy form for one plate for now.
If it's possible to cut the plate out of acrylic I'll be in for two (depending on any price differences there may be).
Yes I could but it won't be in this GB.

I might do a mix bag (aluminum, acrylic, Poker, Race, TKL.....) kinda GB later, after this GB.

I could possibly help you get a quote for the acrylic version if you'd like Beast. I think I can get fairly good prices for acrylic products with exceptional quality. PM if you wanna discuss this.
Acrylic at the same thickness as these metal plates is too weak to be of any support. It may as well be not there at all. There goes that idea then, oh well.
I suggest the use of cardboards, thick cardboards as reinforcement. The phantom plate which is made of aluminum has trouble surviving the journey without.
I'm not sure whether this is feasible, but adding some curves at the top/bottom sides of the plate might improve the strength and reduce any tendency to bend. Most production plates has a slight bend if you open your plate mounted keyboard up.
...This GB is to setup a rapport with him so I don't feel like a a-hole asking him questions every few days, ie become a paying customer instead of some guy emailing him for quotespretty clever here imho
The plate is little less than 1/4" thick, maybe 5mm.
God damn it. I just ordered one.I'm in the same boat but I haven't ordered yet, my to buy list is too large:
I don't know why.
I don't even have a poker. o_o;
STOP MAKING SHINY THINGS
In for two! Filled out the form, although by the time these are sent out I believe I will have moved. So I'll hopefully I can just message you when I know Beast.
$17 is probably right for shipping to Canada using USPS priority, but try looking up USPS first class instead. It's what I always ask people to use because it's far more reasonable in terms of price. Just going to wait to see what shipping is before placing an order.
You have to desolder everything. The 7 LEDs and the 61 switches. Then you mount the switches on the plate. Then solder the switches to the PCB. Then solder the LEDs back into their positions in the respective switches. You can remove the switch tops without desoldering later, since the plate design supports it. You would just have to desolder the LEDs to swap those springs/stems under them.
This should fit the Pure, right? I'll check that all the mounts line up, but would I already know that the Poker doesn't have a center screw--would it be possible to have that added? I'd definitely be in for one if that were the case.
Edit: Just remembered my short right shift key.. Maybe a Pure plate GB could come around in the future.
thanks man! i appreciate the response :p
sounds like i need to learn how to solder haha

Problem with doing this for the Pure is desoldering and resoldering all 62 backlighting LEDs in addition to all the switches. Much more of a PITA.thanks man! i appreciate the response :p

Yeah, it's not terribly hard, but it helps to practice (and to have decent equipment). As long as you've got all the switches desoldered and everything, you might as well lube and sticker them, as well. You did buy some of demik's switch stickers, right? :P Then mount the whole thing in an aluminum case from treble318, imsto, or oneproduct. :D Top off with PBT keycaps or some nice Cherry Corp doubleshots.
Edit: If you want a programmable controller as well, you'll just have to wait for the GH60 project.
Do you think this would fit a KBT Pure (without backlighting)?
In for one...fancy form sent! Thanks again The_Beast for making this possible ^-^
Filled out the form. Don't have a Poker, but I might be interested in one sooner or later. I will definitely be in if you do the mixed bag GB for the Race and others. Also, I'm in the same boat as another where I will be moving. I know you said as long as the order is paid, it can be held until it can be shipped at a later time, so I will probably have to go that route with you. We can discuss that at a later time, I'm sure.
Just submitted my order, and I'm already thinking I should do two in case I order another Poker.
Now it's time to start learning how to solder.
I think I only ordered one, can I double my order?
Talked to the postman, see post #1 for update on international shippingShow Image(http://media.tumblr.com/tumblr_lkg9rjXMRI1qzyufx.gif)

Does that includes the padding cost?
I found that padding is really important. A swiss cheese made of steel plate is not really strong, and a lot of reinforcements is required
I sent an order for two plates. Please confirm that you got it.
Thanks.

I feel retarded asking, but i have to learn somehow. What are the advantages/reasons for buying.these?
Might be a dumb question, but will this plate fit in the stock, plastic Poker case?
-Tad
Awesome! And one other question... will it work with the stock stabilizers?
I placed my order. Waiting for invoice :)
-Tad
Dumb question - how does one install the plate?
Anyways, you desolder all the switches, install them on the plate and then resolder on all the switches back onto the PCB.
i was under the impression changing switches on a poker requires no soldering?Dumb question - how does one install the plate?
Again, no dumb questions guys, everyone is here to learn ^___^

Gotta fix that, because doing it wrong is just too damned much work...
If you are using PCB mount Cherry stabs, install them FIRST. Then install switches through the plate.
Hmm so all our plates will have the word 'ali' and the logo on them? I think alixinhzai is doing a fantastic job sharing his design with us, just wanted to know if ours will be neutral or 'branded' with his name.

Nope, the plate will look exactly like the picture in my first post (no brand or usernames). I was thinking of putting GH someone on the plate, but decided not to since I'm sure not everyone uses GH as much as I do or wants GH on the plate.
The little notes on the order forms are cute but I'll be printing those exact addresses, so make sure it's exactly how you want it.
add me to the list for one. Thanks!
I might tentatively be in for a total of three. Still trying to decide.

Could it be an optional thing though? I would love to have 'GH' or 'geek' on one side and 'hack' on the other if it'll fit.
To the OP, How are you getting/making these?
I am in a welding class atm and if I get good enough I could essentially make my own correct?
Are you hand-making these and is it possible to?
Thanks:)
They have one of those at the shop. I just need to learn how to use the machine. How did you get the design for it? and how can I get one of my own?
Thanks :)
I'm not very fond of the name geekhack itself.
But I'm fine with the initials (GH) or some random logo you come up with.
But it won't be a total disaster to have it written somewhere. It's under the keycaps anyway :D

Are custom cut-out designs possible?
Own GH screen name for example?
No branding is needed on my plates! Plain plate looks great to me.
But I won't cancel my order even if plates are stamped any logo ;)
Thanks a lot for organizing this GB, The_Beast.
Adding plates of different designs shouldn't increase the cost per plate, only decrease it further. All they do is place the files next to each other. Stacking more won't take much time and will allow for the the machine to work a bit longer on the same sheet.

It only requires on small modifcation on the right shift. Count me in if this is the case.
If I ordered 60 of those plates and one that was nearly identical but had a few more holes in it or a small text personalization, would it be $10.50 for all 61 plates or would it be $10.50 for 60 of the plates and $22.29 for the one that had a few extra holes/personalization in it?
I don't mind getting one without customization.
I intend on sticking with it 'till I get the plate in my hands :)
Thanks for putting up with these questionnaires guys, it should have been handled during the IC, but I just never thought of it.

Maybe I didn't search enough, but where do we find the questionnaires?
Sorry if this has been answered or if it obvious, but what is the point of these plates? To decrease flex?
I'm pretty stoked to try some costar stabilizers on my Poker! Hopefully they will fit :)
^That's probably nothing a little sanding couldn't handle.
Sorry if this has been answered or if it obvious, but what is the point of these plates? To decrease flex?
Yes, they make the keyboard feel more solid and reduce PCB flex while typing.

Then put me down for one. They only come in one flavor right?
Grind/sand the bottom side... gotta keep that plate pretty ;)

All you really need to know is how to use a soldering iron and some time ^___^
I recommend a non adjustable Weller station The_Beast. The one I use is most likely older than us and still using the original everything (new tip o'course). I have never had problems with my Weller.
I'll see if I can't get a picture of mine for you to are, its nice and easy, one switch and I'm ready to go (with a wet sponge of course.
Initially ordered 2 plates but 1 will be enough for me so I used the re-order form for that, hope that's OK.

So it will be water jet cut, not laser cut?
So it will be water jet cut, not laser cut?
From our experience with Phantom's plates, laser cut is more precise, as the laser beam is a lot smaller than water jet's water beam. At least for the 2 shops we used. The first Phantom prototype plate was waterjet cut, and the inside corners are rounded. It was difficult to install switches, especially plate mount stabilizers, without filing off the corners. The actual shippng Phantom plates were cut with laser.
I would recommend using laser cut even if water jet is a lot cheaper. Sorry if this has already been covered earlier in the thread.
Don't know if this is all ready said but I'll ask anyway.
Will i be able to change switches without de soldering the switches after the plate is on the board?
Sent from my Samsung Galaxy Note II using Tapatalk.
So the guy is ok with cutting 2 different plates without counting it as 2 separate orders? If that's the case, can we also sneak in a plate design for PURE? If so, I'll see if I can make the DXF file for PURE layout.
And I'm guessing it won't be a problem to switch from cherry stabilizers to costar stabilizers?
Don't forget to tease us with a photo of that prototype!
Just a reminder, I will not be extending the order time frame and I will not be accepting late payment whatsoever (no excuses).Oh snap serious pony is serious :O

Would it be too much trouble to cancel my order? Ended up buying a case that has a plate with it.
How the switch tool?
Looks nice, very interested when you do a Pure plate, or the GH60 when that becomes available. Also when will the switch tool be for sale?
^^ yes you have to desolder all the switches first before installing the plate

Pure plates should run with the mix bag/GH60 plate buy (if someone sends me a dwg or the GH60 has a pure layout {which I think it does}). I'm going to be ordering some of the cherry switch tools at the same time as these plates and should be on sale shortly after that.
Looks excellent! If it's possible to add a set of the switch tools to our plate orders, I'd be game.
Bag of switches: top left?
Where were those from?
I think the GH60 will use 1.5x size ctrl/shift and 1x size win so it is a little different from the Pure layout.

Best, how much did each of those prototypes cost for 1 piece?
That "cherry Tools" is interesting, :-X
Will you make them into production?
Are those burn marks normal for laser cutting? Can they be wiped off or is do you need to sand it off? And it looks like there is some kind of defect with that spade in the 2nd pic.
The burn marks are standard fare with a laser. The stuff that looks like it shouldn't be there is just chaff that didn't completely get removed, this is most prevalent in tight spaces. A lot of times it just takes a little wiggling with your finger or shove on it with a micro screwdriver.
So no tolerance issues at the edges of the cut out holes or the 0.0625" thickness? Costar specified 0.060", but it looks like the switches still mount on fine, unless it's because the bottom of the plate was already sanded down to 0.060". Maybe mount the whole stabilizer setup to confirm the fit.
can i get that switch tool sep?
i havent read any of the pages here.
So we won't be able to open switches for Backspace, left/right shift and Enter, unless we desolder? :/
For those of you that want to have all your switches openable with the plate, get yourself a file. Look at the image of the plate, there's really not much material that would need removing. There's always the chance that you won't keep Cherry plate mount stab compatibility doing this.
Beast, you might ping Litster he's the closest up the food chain still posting that dealt with Phantom proto's.
And here's a picture :)
snip
So, if I understand this right, you just have to shave off a little where I marked it red?
The space bar switch has the least support, right? (judging from the plate design)
Do you, Beast, feel a difference between space bar switch and any other switch when pressed? If not, why not redesign the plate?
Well, the spot that would need shaving for the best results are the vertical lines to the left and right of the switch. Trim them so that you are widening the switch hole. The only support the switch gets at this point is from the top and bottom edges of the plate hole. I MIGHT be able to figure out how to do this with a pic...
snip
How much material would sanding both sides of the finished plate remove? Not enough to fit costar stabilizers without further sanding right?
The plate is .0625" thick, costar requires .060" +/- .005 thick plate (if I recall correctly). I can ask if he can sand them closer to .060" but it might increase the cost.

If it could be sanded to .060" without increasing cost that'd be great, but otherwise I don't mind just sanding it myself. There are only five switches that need stabilizers anyway.
Which is the better plate? the Poker Suit or standard? How do we order the tool?
When we add this to our board will it be as easy as a PBC board to take off and put on switches?

The blank and poker suit plate are 100% the same except that the poker suit one will have the four poker suits cut out above the spacebar. You can order the tool, I'll be buying a bunch of sets and selling them during the same time as shipping the plates.
All the keys will still be open-able except those 4 stabilized keys I was talking about on this page.

While I'm no longer in this GB, is there a good guide for modding from PCB to plate mounting? It's been forever since I soldered anything and if it's simple enough I'd rather just do it myself.

Paid. Sorry about the delay (if there was one) these days seems like everyone is doing the invoicing via pm, I hadn't been in my pp account for a while
ffs I forgot to put my gh name in the notes
sorry about this I know it's a drag I will pm you
Don't worry about the note section. I thought you could put you can't, I only needed it so I could find your user names more easily. But google spreadsheets have a search function (google and search, iknowright?) so it's no big deal
Can I get a refund and just send you apples instead? I feel that would be better for both of us :p
Time to start shopping for soldering stations.
That hakko is very cheap. US people should take advantage of that price, because people in Aus pay double the price for that FX-888

College beats the sleep out of you. I also had a summer job that started at 7am, so 6am wake ups everyday. So waking up at 7:20am to get to a 8am class is sleeping in for me.
+ naps some times if I can
I love sleep. One of my favorite activities. That's why I prefer uni over college. Find you get more later classes. I don't mind 6pm lectures, just means pub at 9;)
And Antarctica the feet!...detached feet
Alright, I'm super glad I did a prototype.
Problems:
1. Cherry spacebar stabilizers didn't fit
2. Cherry stabilizers are tight
3. Costar stabilizers fit in the slots but don't work. The legs of the black part of the stabilizing system are deflecting inward not allowing the white insert to freely move.
4. Cannot open switch tops on stabilized keys (except the spacebar)
Solutions
1. alixinhzai said to flip the cherry style mount on the spacebar location when he passed me the design, I forgot, it's upside down. It will be fixed before sending to the cutter
2. I'm going to be adding a few thousandths on the left and right of the cherry stabilizer cutout
3. Nothing, it's due to plate thickness. You'll have to sand need the costar stabilizer cutouts if you want them to work. Sanding around the mounts should stop the deflection.
4. Nothing, I don't feel comfortable taking away anymore support from the switches
Other than that, it's a nice plate. Switches are nice and tight, it makes the poker feel much more solid and adds ~1/3lbs to the total weight.

Going from DanGWanG's proto steel plate....
1: a touch tight, no big deal really very little plastic was removed, and only from the outside corners.
2: not at all tight for the 2x, you just have to know how to finesse it or get lucky slipping it in ;)
3: no Costar's on hand
4: Haven't gotten that far tonight
kaka, I hope u'll shipping for me first =))
Did u fix issue open top sw with stabiliers? I don't see any fix in file you sent me.
[...] change stems (how often do you really do that?)On a Poker? 124789 times more than on my Filco.
No, It's only 4 switches that you would have desolder to change stems. It's not that many and I'd rather not lose integrity around those 4 switches just to have the ability to change stems (how often do you really do that?)

Oh, c'mon, you know what I mean.
At first you had the argument you didn't want to take away plate support. But then you dismantled this argument yourself.
So again, what's holding you back?
(not trying to aggressively get you to do this, just want an answer ;) )
@esoomenona
It's not about the amount of switches. Even if it's only one single switch, you have to desolder and solder again, just for a single stem/spring/sticker/lubrication. So we have the possibility to avoid this.
As someone who does a lot on my Poker (and it being my first option to test out all the things) I want to change things quickly. I think that's understandable.
Well, you said you can't feel a difference between space bar switch and an alpha switch.
But whatever, if they are done already or soon to be done, it doesn't really matter now anyway.
I'll just have to work on them by myself then.
Thanks anyway for your argument-cooperation, little Brony ;)
Could someone enlighten this nub here exactly what mod would be required to allow those 4 switches to have their stems swapped without requiring soldering? Oh and pm'ed you about some shipping address changes Beast.
The eagle has landed.
The_Beast I thought you were the one of the leaders of the potato camera club, how can you just leave like this :'(

Besides WhiteFireDragon's prototype Universal TKL Plate, the only TKL plates there are Phantom ANSI150 plates, which will be distributed by DanGWanG. The rest appear to be all the Poker plates, those with poker suit cutouts, and those without.
When you shipping these Ben-bro? Also, we all get a keycap puller with each one? I thought I added myself to that interest check, but I dont remember where it went.

alixinhzai designed and ordered 3 stainless steel filco plates. TheProfosist ordered 3 of them too. I'd rather have them tested by TheProfosist and alixinhzai before I do anything else with it since I don't have a filco TKL to test it out on

My bad. I wasn't aware of the others besides the Phantom and WFD's Universal. I will test one if you need testers. I have a Filco TKL I was trying to sell, but it looks like I will just do a switch swap.
Just out of curiosity, why is my paypal email red in the order status list?
Just so there’s no jelly flying around, I did not get any special treatment on getting this plate first while nobody else has it shipped yet. I paid for medium flat rate box and it was shipped along with my TKL prototype. I don’t even own this plate, just helping some people install and mod their pokers.
The plate weighs 5.24oz. Shipping it international in a USPS flat rate envelope is $17. Your best bet is to package it in a normal padded envelope and shipping it by first class since it's the cheapest and under 4 pound. If you including packaging, it should be around 6oz package for 1 plate, so first class international for that is about $7. You'd save on shipping cost, but it's a real hassle for first class international because they won't allow you to do it online. You have to handwrite the customs forms and wait at the post office to pay for it.
Would it be alright to just wrap the priority envelopes in brown wrapping paper and call it a day?
Just take them back to the post office. :)

USPS is pretty strict on using their priority shipping supplies for your own uses. One time I shipped something in a fedex box that was turned inside out, and they though I used their flat rate boxes turned inside out so instead of delivering to the receiver, they returned the package to me a week later. I had to take the package back to the post office to prove to the clerk it wasn't ther priority box flipped inside out.
If they suspect the dimensions of the envelope is their flat rate envelope, they might return it to you and you'll have to pay again to reship in the proper packaging. If the brown wrapping slightly rips because of bad handling and the USPS envelope is visible, they're return to you for sure. Most likely you'll get away with it though, but I won't get into the ethics of trying to cheat them. Padded envelopes that can fit this plate are like 50cents each at walmart or ebay.
Where's my plate brah?
I'll get international rates and send out international invoices soon as well
what's the deal with the switch tool, I can't see anything about it in the OP and don't recall it being on the order form
It will be on the shipping invoice. You'll get to pick just shipping, shipping + 1 tool or shipping + 2 tools
Shipping + ALL THE TOOLS. Pls.
Save some for the non-GB folk please :(

oh ok thanks mate. So I am waiting on a shipping invoice then, via pm?
so the shipping is going out in batches right, after ppl have responded to the shipping invoice. Cheers!
Hoping one of you kind sirs will post up some pics of these going in. I do own a soldering iron but have only used it to splice wires together and I'm a bit vague as to what these are actually for :)
damn late to another group buy...anyway next time round 2....imma come at you...
anyone who missed out on this PM me. I have just killed my poker so I will not be needing it - thinking maybe you can pay me for it and I will change the shipping address to yours when the final order comes through, or something like that. As long as it doesn't inconvenience the organisers
V-tec kicked in JDCarpe!

Just start posting more. Most active members average about 5 posts per day. At that rate, it only takes 12 days to get to 60 posts.
All international shipping invoices sent out, I just have a few unique cases to deal with

Just a reminder, when you install these bad boys, think about what you're doing for stabilizers. I had planned to use some plate mount Cherry stabs with mine, but I forgot to push them thru the back of the plate before installing to the PCB and soldering all the switches. So I ended up using Costar stabs, since that was the only option I had without desoldering all the switches again. If you use the stock PCB mount Cherry stabs, don't forget to mount them to the PCB before mounting the plate.
This in an aluminum case makes for a very solid feeling Poker. What PCB flex?? :P
Would someone please modify the first msg to explain what the purpose of a Poker plate is?
What does a Poker Plate give you that you don't get with a random keyboard plate?
All I see are some nice pics of a hunk of metal made to hold Cherry switches but nothing about how this hunk of metal is better than the hunks of metal we already all have in our keyboards?
Got mine yesterday! Is anyone planning on painting theirs?
Beast considering to do another MO for the switch tools or i can buy from ya offhand.
oa oa :( waiting for shipping invoice :(
I went to the post office yesterday, it was 1oz over 4 pounds so you would have gotten charged a lot more. Sorry I've made you wait so long so I'll pay half of your shipping?
Out of plates? Will their be another run of these?
As I understand it these solve the 'bendy' problems on the Poker.
Still waiting on mine. But then it seems like I'm waiting on everything these days...
hope Beast have time shipping to me before new year :(

Does anyone have an extra poker plate?
Just got mine, very happy with it :)Next step...FMP: Full Metal Poker. :))
I have my plates just sitting here, because I can't f**king seem to desolder a single switch. I SUCK ROFL.
Wonder if it will fit the GH60 as well...

If you want to do a standard ANSI 125 layout on the GH60 it will. But some of the switches are rotated, so they will fit in the holes in the plate, but you lose the ability to open those without desoldering first.
Round 2!!!
Round 2!!!
I can run them with the GH60 plates, it should make it easier on everyone especially myself in terms of everything

You are the freaking man! Do you have a rough time frame you were thinking?
I have no idea. I'd love to ship plates with the PCB but I don't know when that's going to happen or who's even running GH60 PCB so I'm really in the dark.
Now we need some stainless steel cases!
how about a sandwich of alum and acrylic, so value and awesomeness are balanced :D
actually you could make it for the gh60 since they have (or will have) the same mounting, so it is getting cheaper because of the amount of orders.

I'm currently designing a all alum. case:

WFD is too, again all alum. Go big or go home (Plus, I've never liked sammich cases)
Finally got around to putting this in my poker. Unfortunately the space bar stab is one of those bendy cherry ones and it soooo doesn't work (did I put the wire in upside down? Don't remember). So rather than toss my now pretty hefty pcb at the nearest wall, I set it aside to be once again desoldered in its entirety. Once I cool off a bit first. Maybe 5 days or so.Show Image(http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/06/20/uhegyjaj.jpg)Boooo
yea I will more than likely swap wires with my race which has a straight wire. I thought I was done with desoldering .... :( I hope my $11 NexxTech pump holds up. I heard that you were having troubles with the stabilizers. I never even knew that the pokers came with a non-straight spacebar wire. You should be able to just get a straight wire. But I think that also means desoldering :(

I'm trying figure out shortcuts to avoid desoldering but I'm just gonna have to nut up and do it. You may see a WTB thread going up for a new poker PCB once I'm through with this thing haha. Plates are a pain in the ass but in the end it's going to be worth the effort. Finally got around to putting this in my poker. I had the same problem after I installed my plate. I ended up taking a pair of snips to the cherry stabilizer to avoid having to unsolder the switches again. I replaced it with a costar stab, of course that lead to a problem with the backlight led. :) I ended up de-solder the led and sanding it down a bit to get it to fit with the costar stab.

EDIT: I'm too impatient to wait for costar stabs haha
I am also intrested in one of these plates! If anyone got one pls pm me!Lurch was selling this plate installed in a poker, but it's too late now as it was sold like a day ago? These are very hard to come by (personal exp), or it could be just that I'm very unlucky because it took me quite a long time to get it.
