Title: Best place for custom caps, including the 3D caps.
Post by: Cobertt on Sun, 30 September 2012, 00:41:31
I've recently bought my first mechanical keyboard, and have been lurking here and /r/mechanicalkeyboards. Is this the best place to get those custom caps, like the recently posted Iron Man cap? Oh, and I bought a Razer Blackwidow Ultimate, but am giving it to my younger brother since my parents have ordered me a WASD v1 keyboard with cherry browns that I designed for my 21st birthday on the 10th of next month. I kept googling custom cherry keycaps and I ended up not finding a whole lot. Thanks for your help :)

Keep lurking.  You have basically no hope of buying an Ironman (unless you drop hundreds on it).  There are some nice sites for novelty keys, though.

ebay has many full sets of various kinds of caps

qtan/keyboard wow (http://www.vendio.com/stores/E-sports-Gaming-equipments/)  (see vendor forum area)
Elite Keyboards (http://www.elitekeyboards.com/)
Mechanical Keyboards (https://mechanicalkeyboards.com/)
Techkeys (http://www.techkeys.us/custom-keys.php)
Keyboard Story (http://www.keyboardstory.com/products)
QWERkeys (http://www.qwerkeys.co.uk/)
Keypop (http://www.keypop.net/)

Also, the marketplace forums here have lots of group buys and sales.

Thanks for the reply! Yeah I basically knew that the Iron Man one was probably a n/a. I just didn't have any luck finding any keycaps that were 3D like that. I think that those are pretty cool. If only I had a 3D printer haha.

The ClickClack skulls are arguably 3D like that; the "Darth Vader" ones certainly are. Someone also made a cthulhu with at 3D printer. This is not to mention other DIY ones, such as Boost's efforts, and the most recent clay Dr. Zoidberg.

What would you use to make your own, I have been in art for a very long time and I think that I could hand make something unique. Is it just clay or does it have to be special since its going to be touched on the keyboard. I don't have a ton of experience in sculpting, but I'm always up for a challenge ;)
