Would these be the test caps before you got it right?

I thought SP was just trying to broaden their horizon. So we can organize translucent caps in group buys for the future :D

Scooped up a white on black base set to go with my red modifier set, should match very nicely. The wasd caps will have to go on my work keyboard.

Very interesting to see these for sale.  I wonder if this is a left-over/mistake run, or if SP is just trying something out?

Thinking I may grab some red ones! (#'s1-4, WASD, and arrows = $15) good on them for stocking more stuff for folks like us. Great way for noobies to switch to FULL SP profile as well, prob what I woulda done if it was available at the time. Easier & cheaper than sourcing a set on here...

Hmm. So tempting. Question, how do double shots compare in durability to PBT? and how much different do they feel? I'd imagine they are a lot better than ABS :P
How much lower profile are they compared to say Leopold keys?
Title: Re: New goodies on the SP marketplace
Post by: Lu_e on Wed, 03 October 2012, 23:13:13
double shots = abs ? if you think about it the legend will NEVER wear off a ds key...

You will mainly notice the nice texture sp puts on their abs. As well as abs' ability to attract oil/shine. So keep your hands uber-clean!

What pbt keys in particular? sp pbt isn't trextured at least not on my portal set. they are like silky smooth. But i have seen textured pbt just do not own any...

the difference in profile is a very noticable drop, I recommend a full profile switch UNLESS you're just doing a F row or something...

Left 2 Right; Filco/OEM , SP DCS , OG Cherry

Dye-sub PBTs legends almost never wear off either. But with PBT, you keep the texture much much longer

I thought perhaps they wouldn't shine as fast being double shot. The only PBT keys I have tried are the ones on my Leopold. The legends on the double shots are so nice and clear.
Does anyone know if PS use the same keycap layout as WASD (Row 4 being the F1-12 keys and Row 1 being the bottom row and arrows)?

We should see more full set SP PBT buys...

Does anyone know if PS use the same keycap layout as WASD (Row 4 being the F1-12 keys and Row 1 being the bottom row and arrows)?

opposite; according to Signature Plastics "Function/Number is row 1, QWERTY is row 2, ASDF is row 3 and the bottom 2 rows are row 4"

SP's FAQ page (http://keycapsdirect.com/faq.php) has a diagram showing their row numbering system.  DCS is the family we typically use around here, which is close to Cherry profile.

Both dyesubs and doubleshots have legends that don't wear off.  The wins for doubleshots are the sharpness and contrast of their legends (dyesub legends must be darker than the key material).  The wins for dyesubs are the feel of the keys (generally preferred by most vs. ABS keys), the intricacy of printable images and number of colors available, and the fact that they don't lose their texture or get shiny like ABS keys do.

My Sp PBT full set is textured. My Cherry PBT (and especially POM) is smoother.

You can actually wear through the legends on a doubleshot keyboard. I saw a picture of one from a medical transcriptionist (I believe) with ALPS that had holes in the keycaps. I haven't seen anything like his on even a heavily used IBM (Dyesub PBT).

So, if you think about it again, the legend can wear off a doubleshot keycap.
---
Edit: Okay, so they look lasered, and I'm not sure if it was ALPS. Still.

For some reason I was going through the archived pictures subforum last night and saw the the picture you are talking about:

I was reminded of this:

That one took 8.5 years of medical transcription though.

Are you sure those are ds? regardless thats gnar.  What about the guy on here that was needing metal caps because he said he was showing heavy wear? But never showed pics...
Title: Re: New goodies on the SP marketplace
Post by: rowdy on Thu, 04 October 2012, 02:14:10
^^ Those look a bit like they have been heated or exposed to a chemical and then crumbled, rather than worn down.

Especially M which is worn in the top left corner, which is not really a typical spot to press a key.
Title: Re: New goodies on the SP marketplace
Post by: hashbaz on Thu, 04 October 2012, 05:14:21
Yeah.  And the caps in that pic are not doubleshot fwiw.  For all intents and purposes doubleshot legends cannot be worn through.  Using the keys to the point of physically destroying them doesn't count. :P

So would all the rows for DCS be nearly the same as cherry profile? (perhaps not quite as low profile)
Title: Re: New goodies on the SP marketplace
Post by: hashbaz on Thu, 04 October 2012, 05:37:09
They are very close in most instances, I believe Cherry is just a bit lower generally (someone correct me out I'm wrong).  The biggest difference by far is the bottom row.  SP bottom row keys are noticeably more angular than Cherry.

Thanks for the info - sorry for my noobishness but by bottom row do you mean the modifiers or z - ?

Both,  actually. :)

The two bottom-most rows (the Z row and the spacebar row) have the same profile.

Wyse has the same font as SP, because they made those too.
I'm surprised they didn't do this a long time ago really. Now if they are smart they will do some 'limited edition' sets in different colors every few months.

Same... amazing they didn't do these standard sets as soon as they started seeing all the gaming/enthusiast boards hitting the market.

Some limited sets might work for them, but I don't know how much inventory they want to sit on should a particular color combo not be received well.
Title: Re: New goodies on the SP marketplace
Post by: IvanIvanovich on Thu, 04 October 2012, 11:31:51
True, but they would have minimal risk if they didn't run too many sets and chose color combos wisely. Stuff like navy on grey, or white on red surely wouldn't be too risky. They do have some ugly colors for sure though, and some really nasty combos could be done. Hopefully they would have enough sense not to.

Okay. I bought a Cherry black on white set and a moogle kit. I need numpad keys. I essentially need a 2x 0 key and a 2x + key. Will something from here match my set?

I don't think you can buy individual keys like that from SP (though I could be wrong ... they do have an inventory sheet with pricing).  No SP keys have Cherry legends though other than what we have them produce via group buys.  You could also try getting blanks from WASD.  Wouldn't match exactly of course, but you can order individual keys from them for reasonable prices.  Their "light gray" color is a decent match for white Cherry sets.

I emailed SP and this is what I get. Anyone interested?

Thank you for your request! At this time we are not offering bulk discounts
on our inventory quantity, however we would be happy to place a production
order for anything listed on the website (this just means that keys won't
ship immediately).
Pricing for the colored translucent keycaps is per color and per row - i.e.
you can't combine red row 2 keys and red row 3 keys to get the same price.
Discounts start after 100 pcs - Pricing is below:
100 keys    $1.06 each
150 keys    $0.89 each
200 keys    $0.72 each
250 keys    $0.63 each
500 keys    $0.58 each

Pricing does not include shipping costs. Manufacturing lead time would be
around 1 weeks from receipt of payment.
We have currently only molded these in 1 space size keys but would be happy
to mold them in other sizes if you need - to quote this I would need to know
the size of modifiers you are looking for.
Let me know if you need anything else!
