I've seen the Spawn praised probably more than the Deathadder here and it looks like an interesting mouse to add to my collection, which is probably a bit too large at the moment, but it seems the Spawn is on the way out and the Xornet on the way in. Only that the Xornet is cheaper which doesn't make it look like an upgrade to the Spawn.
What are the key differences between them? Size, shape, basic tech specs. I found some comparison threads on overclock.net but all they talked about was itsy bitsy numbers and details that don't really interest me. Like what colour mousepad to use with them.
And how big are they, compared to a DeathAdder or a G9?
So yeah, in short; is the Spawn worth the extra cash?
And as a side-note; does anyone know any other mice with the same kind of shape?
-
It's one of the best fingertip mice I've tried. They use the exact same case, the only difference is the sensor and color. If you use high sensitivity, the spawn may be worth going for.
-
In general:
- Spawn better for higher dpi, Xornet better for lower dpi steps.
- Spawn better for dark mouse pads, Xornet better for light color mouse pads.
- Spawn more expensive but more features, Xornet cheaper plug and play.
- Spawn red, Xornet black.
The overclock.net compare their tracking speed in extreme scenario, so if you don't swipe that fast then don't worry about it. In the end it depends on what you want.
I use a Xornet and I'm happy, that and I don't need the extra features Spawn has :)
-
Personally I think the Xornet does the same thing for cheaper. Spawn just looks nicer. IMO

What features does Spawn have that the Xornet doesn't?
Is the DPI really only adjustable in preset steps? In that case I'll take the one with 800 as I seem to remember one starting at 800 and the other 500. I think the Spawn is the 800 one.
Also, not really important for me but I'm a bit curious; how big of a difference does mousepad colour make?
Apologies if this is poorly worded; keyboard is currently behind a driving wheel and the awkward typing makes it hard to concentrate on wording.

From what I know I believe this is the DPI steps, and yes you can only stick to those then tweak from windows mouse speed settings after.
Spawn:
800, 1800, 3500
Xornet:
500, 1000, 2000
As for the "features", I think Spawn has built in memory to save software macro and button assignments and stuff. Xornet is plug and play so you can't assign different functions to buttons other than their default functions.
And for the color, I will have to test that later. I just know so far my Xornet track perfectly on my Artisan Shiden (White), doesn't own a Spawn so I can't test that one.
Personally I like the dpi steps on the Spawn better but I really don't need any of the other features plus Xornet was on sale for $20 so it was a no brainer for me :P
Oh another note, I'm probably gonna go get a CM Storm Recon this weekend. It should also be a viable choice for claw grip user too. I'll let you guys know when I get it ~
Recon:
800, 1600, 3200, 4000

Ah, thanks for the replies. I'll probably go with the Spawn then as I really like having onboard memory and 800 dpi, which is what I use most of the time. If the Xornet had 800 dpi then I'd probably get that over the Spawn as I can live without the onboard memory.

Spawn has a better sensor (http://www.overclock.net/t/854100/mouse-sensor-technology-guide-v2-0) than Xornet.
Mousepad color can make a difference for optical mice, where some might track a bit better on white mousepads. With both the DeathAdder and G400, LOD (lift off distance) is slightly reduced on my white Artisan Shiden over my black QCK.

The thing that interests me, though, is how important that difference is. I often see people talk about perfect sensors and whatnot when people want a mouse recommendation, but I can't really see how that matters unless you're playing high-level Quake or something. And how many games require that level of precision these days?

I don't think the Recon is native 4000 is it?
-
I clicked the reply button to this thread with a Xornet. Sadly, it's on it's last legs. Everything started glitching out, and a Spawn is supposed to arrive in the next few days.
-
Spawn all the way. I'm thinking of replacing my old Spawn with a new one because the red surface has been peeling off and it's rather ugly. haha
-
Well this is a necro, I actually ordered a Spawn back after I'd created this thread, but no go since apparently no stores stock it in Norway. I recently bought a Xornet and I have to say it's fantastic, although it hasn't seen all that much use since I have other mice that are more exciting to use.

I use the xornet more than my g9x. Once I got used to the placement of my ring finger, it is great! I'm even using it on a black pad too.

You have no idea how appropriate your post is right now; I just swapped to my Xornet from my G9x because I was starting to feel it in my hand after some heavy gaming, and wanted something a bit more relaxing.

This. I'd appreciate a left-handed xornet though.

BTW is spawn discontinued? It's still on CM Storm's official website, but I can't find one available locally.
-
My hand wasn't wide or short enough for the Spawn. It hurt. Also my cursor would drift down and right when moving for some reason.

I've heard it's still available in the US, but they seem to have replaced it with the Xornet in Europe.

FWIW the Spawn with firmware 60, 61, and 102 has dpi steps of 800 (native unlike firmware 30-32), 1600 (instead of 1800), and 3200 (vs 3500).

good to know.
i liked my spawn, but the only reason i got rid of it was because the DPI was either too high or too low.
but after trying out a deathadder, it's hard to get another mouse.
i even stopped using my g9x for a deathadder. and i loved that mouse.

I use the Xornet for my 3rd rig, excellent mouse......don't really need higher than 1600dpi for single monitor gaming imo. I believe it has an optical sensor which is said to be better for FPS gaming as it does not share the weaknesses of laser sensor, namely acceleration and prediction (or so I've been told). Honestly, I have absolutely no problem playing an FPS game like UT3 and attain very good scores with the Xornet, or my other mice. Recently bought a Roccat Kone XTD because the Tt Level 10M mouse which I use for my main system is still rather uncomfortable to use even after all these months. Here's a pic to show the size difference between my Kone and Level 10M, as compared to the Xornet. Yes, the Kone XTD is about the same size as the the Level 10M, but due to its shape (ergonomic) it fits so much better in my hand.

I use to have a CM spawn, it was probably the most comfortable mouse I've owned (out of 9 different mouse). Sadly, the highest DPI at 3500 was much too low for me so it was not usable. I need mice that are extremely sensitive, about 6000 DPI or higher.

for what do you need such high DPI?

Anyone wanna let me try a spawn/xornet so I can try the grip? I will pay postage both ways.
-
plz

The Xornet is pretty cheap, it'd probably just be better to buy one and if you don't like it you could always try to sell it off again.
Then again you've got ridiculously cheap postage prices in the US, so idk.
