Title: Ducky Shine 1 vs Keycool 87 Thoughts & Comparisons
Post by: furosuto81 on Sat, 13 October 2012, 00:58:27
I just received my Keycool 87 from QTan's store. I'm rather impressed that I ordered it on the 9th and received it on the 12th. From Guangzhou, China to Wisconsin in three days is pretty cool. I've created a Flickr gallery with some visual comparisons between the Ducky & the Keycool. Both are white LED models since I'm not a fan of colored LED keyboards. The Ducky has brown switches and the Keycool has blacks. I've never had a black board before, and I wasn't sure I'd like it. So far, I actually prefer typing on the blacks, although I'm getting used to not having any tactility other than bottom out, which I'm actually finding I do less (probably due to the heavier weighting).

Some differences to note between the two:
I've wanted a backlit tenkeyless for a while now. I use this PC for gaming 80% of the time, and I do take my rig on the road on occasion. It will be nice to have a smaller footprint keyboard. Ducky Channel is now advertising the DK9087 Shine 2 (http://www.duckychannel.com.tw/en/DK9087_Shine2.html) as "coming soon", but who knows when it will show up for purchase outside of Taiwan. For now, I think this board will suffice.

Take a look at the gallery (http://www.flickr.com/photos/88005189@N05/sets/72157631756671952/), and let me know what you think. Save the comments about backlit keyboards. Some of us like them...deal with it.

Great, simple comparison, thank you for that.

I actually found that non-backlit keyboards tend to have standard characters e.g. 1-9 on the bottom of the key, and the shifted characters at the top.  The Ducky reverses this, to allow for backlighting, and presumably as you would probably type numbers more often than special characters.  The Keycool does look a bit weird to me in that respect.

Yup. I blame my first MacBook Pro for getting me hooked on them. I just think they look more professional/high-tech than colored LEDs. Plus my PC case is a Corsair 600D Special Edition, which comes with white LEDs. So it fits in with the black & white theme I have going on.

One other observation so far: the backspace key has a weird "ring" to it that the other stabilized keys don't seem to have. It does use Cherry stabilizers (which don't bother me like everyone else here).
