Title: Quick dye Job
Post by: Halverson on Sun, 14 October 2012, 19:46:06
Was at the cottage with my old Cherry with fading PBT caps, so figured I'd spruce em up a bit. Used RIT powder dye, with lotta salt. The colours were teal and rose pink.

A few of his other caps he threw in the pot warped from the heat so be careful what you use but they turned out great

Wow that's actually beautiful. Colors look pretty consistent without any blotches. Can you take a clear closeup of the caps?

+1 on consistency :)

Does this wear off over time, or does it like soak into the key caps for a permanent change?

I can't atm, moving in a couple weeks so I have most of my stuff 8 hours away ready for moving. Sadly only have one keyboard with me. I'll try to remember to get some nice shots when I get all my stuff.

Not 100% sure, but it is definitely soaked in, so I would think permanent.

That beauty came with clears. Got it cheap on eBay a few months back. Was going to harvest for switches, but ended up liking the board.

Oh, nice thanks. Are all the G80 POS keyboards Cherry Clears? to be sure.

I believe most are browns. Not sure on the technicals of cherry boards, not sure if there is a way to tell without looking.
That seller had pictures of the switches. If the seller doesn't know, best bet is to get them to pop a cap off.

Wait was this board a Cherry G81? G81's can have Cherry MX on them?

Ah nono. Just remembered, all my boards are in my signature as well. It is a Cherry MX 8100.

Interesting. It seems the G8XXX doesn't decide the switch model 81 just means POS I believe. I have seen a lot of G81's with MY switches. Trying to figure out what switch that is beneath a cap is a trickier game than I thought.
