Title: How do I call the UK Police from USA
Post by: tp4tissue on Wed, 24 October 2012, 11:59:55
So, a buddy from high-school calls me up. He's the type that's "not all there", says he wants to off himself.

I hopped on the google immediately during the conversation, and followed the suicide help steps as outlined.

Determine urgency of situation

___He has no definite plan as to when or how

Offer console

___Problems may be temporary // Death is always permanent

Steer topic away from negative thoughts to modulate their emotions..

___League of Legends is awesome, You gotta try it...
___Some misogynistic jokes, usually works with guys because women are a large problem.

I did all of those things.. "and" got him to agree to call me tomorrow.  ^-^

NOW, I need to know how to contact local authorities in case he "does" get "serious".

I live in New Jersey, USA

Can some one tell me exactly what numbers to dial for the UK police emergency, from where I am..

No, I don't know how to make an international phone call. I've always skyped my out of country family members.

I also do not have his exact location, I only know he's in the UK, I will try to find this out tomorrow.

Ok, so I just put all those in all at once, right?

Should there be any input latency or wait menu in any of those numbers?

If you don't know his location, it may take some kind of warrant to trace his cell phone. Without a cell phone, how the heck could anybody find him?

There are probably as many pubs in England as policemen!

He called me from his house phone.. It shows a number on the Caller ID... 13 numbers, I'm unfamiliar with this stuff. If I gave that to the police, they could find him yea?..

I just want to make sure I get all the potential road blocks out of the way to expedite rescue if needed.

Okay do you know where in the UK he lives? What I'd do is alert a random police station in the UK and let them handle the rest. I chose Manchester and here's the number, dial this exactly if from within the US: 011441618725050

International access code is: 011
Code for UK is: 44
You then add the desired phone number, omitting the leading 0, if present.

Emergency services (911 in U.S.) is 999 in the U.K.

I have no idea if 011-44-999 would work though. I'm thinking it may not. But 011-44-[his number, minus leading 0 if present] should.

EDIT:

His number should only be 10 digits. So I'm assuming it begins with 440 in which case drop the 0 and put 011 at the front. Good luck.

EDIT:

I forgot, if it's a landline, then there would be an area code which is between 2 to 5 digits, which would precede the 10 digits.

Google the first part of your friend's home phone number to find out the area code, then use that information to call his local police station on the non-emergency line.

Ah... ok.

first few digits that show up on my Caller ID, is " 1441227xxxxxx " Total 13 digits. I'm guessing the 144 is the international part, but I don't see any area code starting with 1227, only 01227 for canterbury, is that how it works?  :-X

So, you could probably have worked this out yourself if you haven't already done so, but Canterbury police station's number is  01622 690 690 (according to the first result I found, so don't hold me to it), so to call that you remove the first zero and prefix it with 144, so the number to dial is  144 1622 690 690 (I think).

There's an organisation in the UK that staffed by volunteers to help people considering suicide.

Ask him to call the Samaritans on 08457 90 90 90.

This is a joke - it is puported to be a new phone numebr to replace 999 in the UK and was a running gag in one episode of The IT Crowd :)

Have you contacted his family?

Have you contacted his family?

I was afraid to because I can't see that playing out calmly..

Let's say the following situation occurs...

I call his dad..

Dad says, My lord... oh noos.. w/e british people say..

he goes to the son, hey buddy, you okay?

The son, goes, damn you're never this nice to me, I hate that "xxxx" friend, he sold me out...

The son, I'm more depressed now, I'm gonna go off myself..

There would be no way to do this without a rapid rise in temperament. So, I opted to steer thoughts as far away as possible.

Or what if his father was all "macho" about it, as many fathers would be, and says something like, well you lil' bugger, why haven't you gone and done it already, you pansy, all this talking no action, that's why you're such a failure...

I didn't want to take the risk that the family hasn't read the suicide help guidelines.  :-X

It appears that you worked out the area code, so were you able to help him?
