I have ordered 1987 IBM Model M SSK from eBay. I received it just now.
Unfortunately, it is damaged while it was being delivered.
I'm really sad because it is broken and one of rare keyboards is gone...
-
Broken how?
-
I'm sure the box fell down from some height because its right side is completely broken.
So, you can see inside of it. and many cracks on it.
-
Shame on whatever company shipped it...
RIP SSK...
-
Is only the top shell broken, or also the bottom? FYI unicomp might still have some extra shells they could sell you. Also, I sold T!ng from deskthority an SSK with an extra top shell, perhaps he would sell it to you.
-
also the bottom... the crack crosses all the way from top to bottom...
I'm going to ask the seller for exchange.
-
Can you type on it?
Chances are the seller will just throw it away...
-
A cracked keyboard shell is no functional component, and it could possibly be repaired (although with a permanent scar). How about the barrel plate, membrane and the controller?
-
If the internals are salvageable, you might have a platform for an awesome project!
-
We can rebuild him! We have the technology...
-
I'm sure everything other than the shall is fine. I have typed on it. It worked fine, but the shall is completely broken.
It is very ugly now. If the seller is going to exchange this with other one, I will gratefully return this.
I will see how this is going to be.

Metaphor: If you buy a new broom, and over time the bristles wear down so you replace the head. Then the handle breaks so you replace the handle.
Is it still the same broom?
-
The answer to that is easy: yes and no.
I have build several "Frankenstein" keyboards which were surely improvements upon the parts from which they were made.
-
It also depends on how much love you put in to it.
Hopefully jspark's SSK can be revived :)
-
If you can't fix it yourself, I'm sure you can sell it to someone who can fix it.
Just don't throw it out, please ^___^

This. It can be saved or rebuilt. Maybe a good donor for mkawa's SSK revival project.

Post some pictures.

pics?

the shells are unfortunately the rarest thing at the moment. everything else in the keyboard assembly is replaceable. sorry bud :(
-
^ But that's no excuse to throw anything out!!
-
Epoxy, sand, and paint. I would do it.
-
Better luck on your next find.

this is definitely an option. the tolerances built into the SSK casing are ... large ... to say the least.
-
Ooh, I'd be interested to see how small of a case you can get a SSK into.

So much for Ms being indestructible.

I have contacted the seller, and he said he is going to send another one. For the damaged keyboard, he has Fedex insurance. Fedex will come to pick it up.
I don't know what Fedex will do with this keyboard. They might throw it away or return to the shipper.
I hope they do not throw it away.
Even though its shell is broken, it is still working though...

Hahahaha!

Original seller probably getting broken one back, to be cannibalized for parts -- or maybe repair it?
-
Who is the seller? (Maybe one of us can contact them to get the broken one for cheap.)

Is it still the same broom?
Classic philosophical issue: Ship of thesius. So if thesius replaces his entire ship one piece at a time, is it still the same? (I argue yes because of continuity of states). What if evil thesius makes a ship out of the parts that real thesius discards? Who has the real ship now?
I'm not as discerning, but I'd just live with it. I'm only worried about metal keyboards looking pretty. The rest are just good to type on.
-
Might FedEx let you keep the broken thing?
Naked but working SSK guts kind of demand a bespoke case project. Billet aluminum, perhaps.
-
I agree that something truly awesome could and should be done with it.
-
I have shipped the broken keyboard to Fedex today.
I don't think Fedex will ship it back to me. I think they will either keep it or ship it back to the seller.
-
Still waiting for pictures ...

If there are no pics, it never happened!

Sorry, rowdy... I have deleted the pictures. Anyway, I bought the keyboard from eBay. So, if anyone is interested in the broken one, contact the seller at eBay.
There in only one who sells Model M SSK.
