For those not familiar with the game;
Faster Than Light (http://www.ftlgame.com/) is a spaceship-roguelike thing game, not really my kind of genre so I'd suggest just having a look at the website rather than me trying to explain it all.
As I mentioned; not really my kind of game but I figured for $10 it's worth a shot. So far I'm really enjoying it, but I haven't gotten past the first batch of sectors yet as I keep getting killed towards the end every time, and that's on easy. I can generally make my way through most of it, the part that usually mortally wounds me is whenever they board my ship.
So basically, I was wondering if anyone playing it here could offer some advice for someone not too experienced with this; what to upgrade first, how to handle getting boarded etc.
Maybe make this a general FTL thread if there's an interest for it as there hasn't been a proper one yet, at least not that I've seen. I've seen the game mentioned in a few threads and there was a small thread about it, but nothing special.
For those interested in it; I recommend giving it a whirl; it's cheap, well-made and, if you're the sort that's interested in indie games, it's a developer that's well worth supporting.
If you're in Europe, like me, buy it through the Humble store rather than the Steam store as Steam just replaces the $ with a €, which makes it more expensive. Don't think they do that when converting to £ though, so UK residents should be fine with either option, although the Humble store does give you a Steam key as well.

It sounds like Enders Game. Fohat.digs' son plays.

do the first door upgrade, it only costs 20scrap and lasts 2x longer. Examine your crew, some like the bugs, do like 2x damage, while the slow guys (entri?) do half damage, so when you get boarded, have particular ppl ready to fight, of course if the boarding party is 1 or 2 rooms away from an airlock, open it up, if you upgraded once in doors, it should last 50%, and then they'll breech into the next room, open that room up too and they should be toast.
if i'm really desperate (or they have like the bugs/rocks board you)i try to drag them into the med bay to fight there and heal if i can, usually this is just depending on if they do that or not.
I should play on easy too lol, i can't get past the 4th sector on normal, i just heard that easy gives you more scrap tho, lemme see.

Thanks for the reminder; I did get the door upgrade once and it was really helpful when I got boarded, I just completely forgot about it afterwards.
And yeah, fighting in the med bay helps, but often they'll go for the O2 supply first which is really bad.
I found the engi ship really nice since your crew gets healed no matter where they are on the ship and the gear you start off with is nice for defensive play.

My son has been playing constantly for a couple of weeks and has upgraded to several ships.
He is Stormdragon999 but as I understand it, this is strictly a solo game.
This might help:

Ah, thanks, I didn't know there was a wiki. Hoping it might help, although I think some of the problem so far is that I'm playing the game the wrong way. I managed to get to the final stand sector a second time and was horribly under-equipped.
Might have to watch some let's play videos or something.

I've been playing it with alittle of the free time i have, I like it alot but sometimes its pretty rough! xD But its definitely a fun game and i should be playing it more!
-
Sweet, will try this out tonight :D

:'( I can't save everybody T.T

no joke i once had a tear in the hull and a crew member just walked over it and got sucked out..., thought it was hilarious, but he was an awesome crew member!

Addicting game but I got over it after awhile. My brother is still playing it and trying to beat the game with every ship. It's unfortunate it doesn't seem like they'll end up updating it :( They also weren't the best in terms of providing compared to how much they raised on kickstarter... They're probably swimming in money right about now.

I'd probably be doing that as well, but I sort of gave up after several failed attempts at beating the game. It's a pretty brutal game, or maybe I'm just terrible at it.

The key is to have pretty much every type of system implemented into your ship. Drones (defensive + offensive), lasers, missiles, etc.

I'm not sure if everybody else knows this but you can heal 6 people at a time. I put 3 in the medibay and just made the rest of the 3 guys go back and forth from one side of the medicbay and the other by clicking rooms on each side of the medicbay. Helped me save my guys multiple times.

Oo, I'll be sure to let me brother know about this! Lol!

Oh, that is certainly useful information. I hope I remember that once I can be bothered having another go at getting through it.

i'm glad i got bored of this game!, omg coulda wasted so much time.

Exact reason I quit the game. Lol! This game has alot of potential to be a decent multiplayer but nope, those SOB's just took our moneys and pocketed it.
-
There is really only ONE way to beat the game on highest difficulty, and that's FREAKING LUCK.... if you get your upgrades, boom you win, if you DON'T, it's IMPOSSIBLE.
Yea, the upgrades are randomly generated and random drops.
I was addicted, and then I realized this, and was pissed, and have moved on.
-
Personally, I like the risk involved in this game... this game has taught me to keep on fighting despite the gods being against you :P.

Something weird I experienced is when the enemy shot a rocket and as it was passing by in front of me, I fired a shot and the shot hit the rocket and stopped it. Seems intentional but still weird?

We played this with some mates while drinking. Our phallic shaped vessel survived many encounters. Oh and my virtual avatar died of space dysentery many times.
-
Finally some sense! I was berated in the IRC channel for asking if anyone plays FTL.
FTL is like chess to me, you just revisit the game from time to time, it's never old.
-
Yep. Play a couple times. Die. Rage quit. Weeks later. Play again.
-
There is no rage quit in FTL because you start over again anyway
-
I don't advocate playing most games with other people but FTL is meant to be played with other people.
The more alcohol, the better too.

It might be fun with other people, but no way is it meant for that. It's only got controls for one dude, and unless you're all drunk then the others will probably start to get bored soon.
Also, really looking forward to the big FTL update. Will probably be a while longer until we get it, but still excited.

LOL true dat

I still have some lingering rage days after my last round of playthroughs >:D
