aren't thick more $? don't exactly have a preference for thick

it seems there are plenty of colors available in the not additionally "thick" just not grey

Yupe the only non-thick PBT colors I know are black, white, and rainbow. Thick ones being grey/blue and one time deal white http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=31861.0

is it that noticeable or worth the extra for the "thick" caps?

Thick style are also Cherry profile which are lower and have a more solid typing feel. If you want something cheaper and are good with a very light grey, you could always harvest the caps off a Cherry board like this one (http://www.ebay.com/itm/COMPAQ-PS-2-Keyboard-with-Trackball-MX-11800-185152-406-186591-406-/370623880112?pt=PCA_Mice_Trackballs&hash=item564ae79bb0)... and get a decent keyboard along with them.

The only grey keys that I've seen are from imsto.

I have a set of dark grey PBT's that are not from imsto. They're a tad thinner, slightly higher in profile, but weights more. Don't ask me what set they are, I'm still trying to figure that out till this day. I got them in a trade. So there are more exotic sets out there, you just gotta look for them.
