2 shots, sometimes mixed, sometimes straight. 1 mid dinner, 1 after dinner.
Been like this for years.
How do you guys do it?
-
I'd say that you do have a drinking problem, yes.
Edit: This is how I do it -- A beer with dinner on Fridays

sigh... I thought as much... but how do you deal with the hopelessness in life...
-
Meetings are everywhere. I actually enjoy them.
-
I binge every weekend so, probably.
-
Two shots doesn't seem like a big thing. If you're drinking a bottle a day, that's another story.
-
I wouldn't say amount is a good judge, but the ability to stop or not would be.
I feel like an idiot for asking, but have you tried to go a night without? Or do you find your hand always reaching no matter what? This type of stuff will provoke a better answer than us trolltypes.
-
I think I have a problem, because I don't like to drink unless it's to get drunk. For the most part, I won't drink on a work night because of it, but it has happened before...
-
Nah. I wouldn't say you do. Unless its impulsive and uncontrolled.
-

It's like reaching for the coat on a cold day. I find it hard to sleep without it.
-
Well now that's a different story.
-
Honestly you are the only one that can answer that question.
-
^It's only a problem if it's a problem?
-
The sign that I had a problem was when I was able to drink a 750mL of anything 40% and not get drunk. Now I only drink on Fridays every other week and am once again able to get tipsy. Also, drinking on nights you need to be up early/be somewhere important was another red flag. I am unclear how alcoholism works on different people, as it didn't heavily impact my work output and I didn't depend on drinking to get me through the day, but did find myself drinking large amounts every night. It may have had more to do with long term depression than alcoholism.
-
If the drink goes into your mouth and not down your shirt, then it's not a problem ;)
On weekends I have a shot before dinner, and a beer during dinner.
No worse than people who have a glass or two of wine with dinner.
-
I was a raging drunk before I turned 21. I quit just after I turned legal and got into hard drugs. I forgot my twenties, spent my 30s rebuilding, and I'm a little excited, a little concerned, for my impending 40s.
Now I drink about 5 drinks a year, never more than 2 a night. I hated drinking and how out of it people get on it, and how selfish it makes them. If I wanna get that separated from the desert of the real, I'd drop acid or mix scrooms with E that was cut with heroin. Drugs are cooler, but only if you know how to ball but choose not to.
-
2 drinks a day is consider stable even by health association standards.
I wouldn't worry about it.
-
got damn xsphat come hang out.
-
I think I have a problem, because I don't like to drink unless it's to get drunk.
Feels like kind of a waste otherwise.. Like buying an expensive meal and it doesn't make you feel totally full.. why bother at all?
I used to go out every weekend, haven't been out for like a month or more now. I don't drink at home or anything like that and I don't drink alone.
-
<3 drugs.
2 shots isn't what you have to worry about, it's your psychological dependency on it.

Not funny Rayuki.
@tp4tissue: One glass of wine a day is actually considered healthy, so I would consider 2 shots not that much different.
The main problem would be if you cannot stop as others have said.
I never drank alcohol, maybe 5 glasses a year or one drink a month at most. Now I am in Berlin for an exchange and I drink a lot more, but never to the point of getting drunk. At worst I got a little bit tipsy.
I do notice that my resistance is increasing though. Where I at first would feel a big Long Island Iced Tea, I now can still drink 2 shots afterwards and not feel a thing.
It does help that I am really tall and cycle a lot.
Personally I only drink it for the taste, but most people around me do it to get drunk. Fine.
As long as you can stop and not feel the need to drink something or if it does not cause any friction anywhere in your life I would say you are fine. Just experiment for a week or so and see if it is just a big habit or an actual addiction.
I know that if I find something I like I usually keep doing it until it is too much. Then I go cold turkey for a month or so and everything is fine.
That has been with gaming, watching a tv-series I like, internet and wanking. :P

It's red wine that's OK to have a glass of everyday, for some crazy reason I can't remember. I think that sort of testing is slanted toward the desire to make drinking everyday tolerable and OK with god. I don't feel the body NEEDS anything that was invented after the human brain was, but want is a different animal.
-
I don't drink much anymore...
But when I do, I prefer Dos Equis.
-
wow I can't believe how many gh'ers are unaware of the benefits of drinking 1-2 good craft beers or glasses of red wine a day. So much mindless regurgitation of DARE brainwashing, thanks public schools...

sorry tp, I don't think liquor has any benefits.

^Is it still beneficial to drink 1-2, followed by 1-2, followed by 1-2, followed by 11-12?
-
Well, if the Daily Mail says it . . .
-
A famous quote from my 87 year old grandfather:
"You'll never die from drinking beer."
-
I never touched another drop of reds, after that 1991 Cabernet this January
Have yet to find another bottle which doesnt taste like detergent :)) :))

Blunts > joints
-
Since you are asian, do you get wasted off those 2 shots?
-
I definitely have a drinking problem. That is why I quit back in 1991 (10 Dec 1991, to be exact).
I still think about taking a drink EVERY DAY.

Word life! The White Owl Peach in a 2 pack is my norm.

I tried morphine once and was in such agony over not being able to urinate I never had a desire to try it again. All lies that it kills the pain, I literally felt like my kidneys were being stabbed through with a knife.
-
You have to be allergic. Nearly ever pain killer is opiate based, so you need to get checked for that allergy because it could kill you if you ever need emergency care.
Morphine makes you not poop, but the **** (penis) remains unaffected except it tends to fall asleep while you're high.
-
I don't think you got a drinking problem -_-...
-

LOL, no, I only get a little calming effect from it. As I've said, been doing it for years now.
-
I don't think you got a drinking problem -_-...
Hurray, I just had a shot to celebrate confirmation of "not" having a drinking problem.
-
isn't a drinking problem, only become a problem, when its a problem?
if you have a shot of something after and druring dinner, how's that a problem?
-
Was it WC Fields who said "I have a drinking problem, 2 hands but only one mouth"?
Drinking in moderation has never been proven detrimental, but binging is surely bad for you.
If sleep is the issue, get some melatonin tabs and take one an hour before bedtime, if you anticipate having trouble sleeping.
It is a natural sleep hormone (I am a big guy and still find that the 1 mg tabs are plenty, the 3 mg must be for horses) but don't take one in the middle of the night or you will have trouble waking up the next morning!
Much cheaper than drinking, too. But don't drive on it, really. It hits in about 45 minutes and you are almost sure to drop off.

yeah but thats really hard to define by any meaningful measure, I think in the UK they call binge drinking anything more than 2pnts which means the media can call every teenager a binge drinker...

Are they really cheaper than 2 shots of vodka? I get the rot gut kind usually. I only spring for svedka or anything nicer on special occasions.
-
Vodka = alcoholic. Better switch to Thunderbird or Maddog 20/20.
-
Melatonin is really great. The body produces it naturally at night to tell itself to go to bed. It is used extensively to work around jet lag by forcing sleep cycles.
I buy a bottle of 50 or 100 at Wal-Mart for $5-$8 or something, so that is something like a dime per pill. I have never run across any form of alcohol that cheap.
Drinking one or 2 beers per night is not binge drinking. Drinking the same weekly amount, but all in one night, is.
-
2 shots, sometimes mixed, sometimes straight. 1 mid dinner, 1 after dinner.
no
2 shots, sometimes mixed, sometimes straight. then after that I can't stop myself so I keep drinking till the bottle is empty and I tell at my wife and kids
yes
not trying to make a joke of it, but IMO you do not have a problem in any way shape or form

Alright, I just ordered a bottle on Amazon.com... If this works... I'll probably consider stopping the alcohol.
I've got a question though... Basically anytime you mess with the endocrine system like this, you risk getting tumors... any literature on that?
-
Been sober just shy of 2 years now. I can't partake of alcohol within reason myself so I don't feel qualified to answer something of that nature for someone else. As others have said only you or persons close to you could answer that question.
-
i'm allergic to alcohol so i guess that helps (plus i just don't care for it).
this poised an issue at my bachelor's party, i had one guy giving me drinks and one guy monitoring me.

Naturally, hormones are not something to trifle with, since they control and regulate almost everything, but the amounts are small. When I first tried it several years ago, they sold 300 micrograms, 1 milligram, and 3 milligrams.
I have not seen anything smaller than 1 mg in a few years, although I have not searched specialty suppliers. I am sure that there are many options available when you start looking.
At first, when I couldn't get the 300 mikes anymore, I was cutting the 1 mg tabs in half. I stopped doing that, but keep thinking that I should start again. I think that half a milligram is probably enough to do the trick for me. There can be a groggy/hangover effect in the morning, I never take it later than about 10:30 pm.
They also sell mist inhalers which are supposed to be quicker-acting and don't last as long. You might have to look in the children's section for that.
Also, I don't do it every night, only when I feel that I am going to have trouble going to sleep. Sometimes that is a couple of nights a week, sometimes I go a couple of weeks without using it.

Not funny Rayuki.
sorry but i dont find the OP very funny either, I've grown up with people around me including close family that have a can of beer in there hand from the moment they wake up until the moment they pass out. So i kinda find this whole thread a bit offending and "Not Funny" to be honest.

I don't have grandparents or most of my mom's extended family because of that, so I don't find it funny either, but I can also take it at face value and not denigrate the dude for trying to solve his problems now instead of when he's in a worse condition.
Way to stay classy, brah.

Whether your drinking habits are a problem or not aren't defined by the quantity or even the frequency to some extent, it's about the reasons for why you drink and the psychological effect it has on you. Two shots every day as relaxant - as you describe - would qualify as a problem, yes, as it's a moderate dependency and presumably outside a social setting.
-

Sigh.... Ok, I do have a dependency on it for sleep on most days.. Reason for drinking.. well.. "I like to sleep".. Your question seems to be, "Am I using it as an escape"... this I need to ponder further, as it is moderately true that I dislike reality most of the time.
-
never liked drinking.. the first time I tried was some chivas regal which i honestly felt tasted like crap.
friends kept asking me to drink and says it will get better after awhile.
took almost a cup of that sh1t burning down my throat.
couldn't sleep the night, felt like crap the next morning. that entire week everywhere i go I smelt that chivas for some psychological reason.
tl;dr: bad experience with alcohol, think my problem is that i don't drink. i'm 19 and almost all my friends drink for the sake of drinking, and here I am prefering coffee and tea.
-
It's not for everyone. Drinking alcohol straight is probably not the best method for a first time drinker though. It's true when they say its an acquired taste. I used to drink a lot of whisky in my teen years and began to love it. It was my preferred drink for a while. I had a few unpleasant experiences with drinking too much of it and from that point on I can't drink it or even smell it without having a "flashback" for lack of a better word and feeling nauseous from it. I'm not going to sit here and try to pressure you into drinking, but I think if you wanted to try again then try something a little different next time. Pace yourself and find something that you enjoy. There's no shame in mixed drinks either. Cheers.
-
It might just be like a routine that settles and relaxes you to help you sleep. Without that regular routine, you might be slightly anxious and less relaxed, and hence slightly less able to sleep (which may, in itself, cause more anxiety and more unrest).
-
It is never wrong to not drink, btw.

err read and comprehend what i wrote, im offended by people that THINK they have a drinking problem when they wouldn't know what one is if it slapped them in the face.
the whole thing is just a troll isn't it? how can ANYONE at all believe this OP actually believes he may have a drinking problem with what he wrote?
go out in the real world and see what REAL drinking problems are and what they do to people/familes and come back and talk ****.
-
People aren't born with a drinking problem. They start with a simple habit like, lets just say, 2 shots a day to help go to sleep, and then it's 3 and 4 and 5. If you are the expert on AODA that you claim to be, you would know that. I know more about addiction than you do because I have studied it, been through rehab and lost everything (literally) twice to substances. Your offense at this topic makes me laugh at you.
And, if you would have researched addiction, you would know that the very first step of a horrid addictive cycle is lying about how much of the substance you do, which the OP may very well have. The second step is you start jokingly asking people whether you have a problem. The OP is reaching out for support out of a valid concern, and you are treating him like a membrane keyboard for looking for help. That sounds like you are being the troll here, so drink up, and let's see where your life is in 5 years. I'll still be clean, lets see how you do.
-
Thanks guys for the suggestions. I guess I should try and drink a little more, to see what I like.. though my girlfriend objects to any kind of alcoholism.
I can get why people want to drink. I've got some pals of my own that just love to force themselves to drink, to get drunk, to get away from the world and all the problems for awhile.
Guess I'm a little bit the same, but I play games more often. Immerse myself in games and let the days go by without a care
-

Exactly the same situation here. Used to be able to drink whiskey straight like it was water when I was a teenager, but after too many incidents getting wasted on the stuff it now makes me gag just to smell it, although I wouldn't call it a flashback exactly since it doesn't really bring back in memories or anything. I can't really drink anything like how I could when I was a kid, gotten soft in my old age, I guess.

I get the same way with rum. Had one bad experience with it and now I almost puke just from the smell of it.
Beer is better anyways...

yes, on a forum that supports and enables addiction, righto. also, you dont know **** about me because i dont go on about my personal life to people on Internet forums.

Grow up, rayuki. This isn't a pissing contest about "my drinking problem is bigger than your drinking problem" and you're not the arbiter of who is and isn't allowed to be concerned about their drinking habits.
The thread title is "Do I have a drinking problem?", that should be your obvious clue as to what sort of severity of problem we're talking about here - if he had a severe drinking problem (which you mistakenly believe are the only legitimate "real" alcohol problems) then he probably would be past the point where he found it necessary to make a thread asking if he had one. Once you start developing psychological or physiological dependency on a substance (as this guy clearly has) then you have a legitimate problem. The fact it's not as severe as some other people is beside the point.
-
rayuki, I'm pretty sure I wouldn't want to know a thing about you. Have a nice day.

I have an old high school friend that dropped out of college due to a weed addiction -psychological. After two convicted felonies of weed charges/distributions he now lives in his moms garage with a mountain of debt due to failed courses/court cost. He now smokes synthetic marijuana in copious amounts(justifying that it isn't illegal so he can still get his high), he lies about how much he smokes/spends and lives with his mom so he can have less overhead to buy more synthetic marijuana. He smokes after every event he does, i.e. smoke-eat, smoke-drive to store, takes "smoke" breaks ~20min intervals at work but while he hides in his car and tokes it up, etc. etc.
A truly pathetic existence where he gets paid under the table for camera installs, he gets super cranky when he isn't high and has ultimately resulted in losing many friends, including me despite my efforts to tell him that he's addicted to being high and to get a real job so can move out of his moms house.
I was honestly at my wits end and him in complete denial, so I gave up on him. Quite frankly, after some thought, I was more his friend towards the end because of the occasional free weed hits I got than anything else... Drugs had morphed his being and personality that it was hard to relate to him in any convo other than weed/getting high and perhaps I was hopeful in the existence of my old friend.
Another question I ask myself.. Would I have treated him/viewed him the same if he had been successful in terms of holding a steady job/own place at the very least but still had the same habits? Probably not. It was quite unnerving on my end to be seen with him in public towards the end of our friendship because he was such a loser in my eyes, and found at age 24 that I had outgrew his "lets get high 24/7" juvenile mentality. I think this is where much friction/contempt developed as he could not drag me down into his thought patterns and thought me arrogant for not wanting to always indulge in such devices.
Don't get me wrong I love to smoke a joint as much as the next dude (yes, I'm going to law school and so the irony) but its all in moderation. Such is the pattern of addiction and the havoc it wreaks to those not even directly related to the substance.
-
Sounds like I should stop drinking about four huge cups of tea a day.
-
alright guys, I got my little Nature Made" brand melotonin 3mg pills from amazon today.... Gonna give it a go, and leave the svedka closed tonight..
Instructions say take 30min before sleep attempt.. These pills are freakin completely too small to break evenly, guess i'll just take a whole 3mg.
