Title: Good reasons not to buy an iphone 5
Post by: Batmann on Wed, 28 November 2012, 16:41:00
Hey guys,

I'm about to change my phone, I dropped mine in a puddle today while getting out of my car, it stayed here for an hour and it now happens to be spiteful...!
I've been an android user for quite a while and I'm about to surrender and buy an iphone 5,

Any good reasons not to?

I'm a big fan of mine.  LTE rocks, noise cancelling is awesome, and once you get used to the taller screen the iPhone 4 looks inferior.

i heard that they are maybe slightly more fragile than the 4s but only from one person. everybody i know with one loves it.

Maps.

Although I don't know what the maps are like in France.  In Australia they were pretty dismal, but gradually improving.  We just got turn by turn navigation too.

Everything I have seen seems to indicate the 5 is MUCH more durable than the 4 and competitors...

I love the design but I'm not sure about windows mobile even though I didn't have a chance to try it yet

I have an iPhone 4 and my Lumia 920, it's still a bit quirky but they will get there with the apps and browser etc.

It is a much nicer piece of hardware than the 5.

So I've had an iPhone 5 for two weeks now, here are my complaints, btw I was on an android device the two years prior to this (thank god i'm done with that o.o)

First off. 'Scuffgate' I'd recommend staying away from the Black iP5, even though IMO it looks waaaay better than it's white counterpart, it will scuff, and it will look pretty bad after a year or so, attacked is a picture of my headphone jack, which I've been using pretty regularly every day.

Second. iOS is a bit annoying, I really dislike how I can't easily get the date in the notification center, and since the iP5 hasn't been jailbroken yet, I'm stuck waiting for apple to update iOS, or wait for jailbreak to add this functionality. This is more of a personal preference, but it's something I really miss from Android.

If you're upgrading from a previous iPhone, the bigger screen will take a little while to get used to, I'm still working towards being comfortable using the larger screen. Again personal preference, and minor nitpick.

Last thing I can think of bad, is the camera "purple tint" when you take a picture with a light source just out of range, but from what I'm hearing this is occurring on the new Android phones too, so it's not Apple-specific.

Onto the good! I know you asked for reasons not to buy it, but I gotta list good with the bad :P

This is hands down, the best hardware on the market right now, the plastic GSIII cannot begin to touch this in hardware feel and raw performance, Apple has done some magic with the A6 processor.

The backing on the phone is also really ingenius, at first I thought it was pretty stupid to be 3/4 aluminum with the two strips of glass, but after my two weeks, I've realized the purpose of the glass is to be able to pull your phone out of your pocket easier. Since your oily fingers slip on metal, and grip the glass, it's easy to pull your phone out no matter which way it fits in your pocket.

This thing is thin. Ridiculously thin and light, I had doubt about it's batter life, but with my daily usage of 5-8h of web-browsing over wifi, 2h of Bluetooth audio, and the remainder of the day polling email servers every 15 minutes, I can get a whole day+ of battery life (6AM-6PM and I'm at 30% right now)

Final thing I can think of, is the Lightning cable, this was a MUCH needed change to the Apple docking/charging cable, the old plug is so big, it's crazy it took them this long to release this, and the whole "fits in either way you plug it in" is absolutely brilliant, just grab the cable and stick it in, no need to fiddle around with it.

These are just some of my thoughts of the iPhone after like I said, 2 weeks of use.

If I had to choose again, I'd probably grab the white iP5 instead, because I like naked phones, so this poor black one will have quite the tough life.

Testimonials and experiences from real people in the field are sometimes more valuable than abstract suppositions from reviewers who didn't have to pay for the device and don't have to use it on a daily basis.

You could stick with android and get a SG3, Note 2 or Droid DNA.  Or even the new Nexus 4.

This is true. I would have considered one of those, but for me I NEEDED podcast support, and all the Android solutions I had tried were sub-par :/ which was a big push for iOS for me.

and GL with Nexus 4, it's my understanding they're sold out everywhere under $600. N4 was definitely a close second, except that I was tired of Android, and it's hard to find 'em

So how are you finding the podcast app in iOS6?

I tried it a couple of times in iOS5, and it fell over completely.  it is mainly that stopping me frmo upgrading to iOS6 (that, and maps).

<Jumping in here> It had been released as a separate app prior to iOS6 and it was just as terrible. I just use TuneIn Radio now for what podcasts I listen to.

Edit: Derp. Pretty much misread your post. Sorry bout that :). I've found it to be no better for me than it was in iOS5.

I have no problem with the Podcast app, it's 100x better than anything on Android :s

It plays my podcasts, it keeps my positions, it automatically downloads them over wi-fi, and best of all it's free.

I don't see why people are complaining about it so much

I have an IP5 and here are my biggest issues to date:

- Apple Maps - Hopefully, the Google Maps app will arrive soon though
- Back of the phone design - Although it looks nice, I'm not a fan of bulky phone cases.  I had a screen protector on the front and back of my IP4 and that did the trick.  To keep the slim design on the IP5 I went and got stickers for icarbons.com, but I'd prefer to have a see through view of the back
- Having to shell out $29 to buy lightning converters - I'm sure lots of folks have tons of older connectors lying around which are rendered useless unless you buy the converters.

I most likely would've stayed with my IP4, but LTE alone made it well worth the upgrade.

Good luck with your decision.

I tried the podcast app under iOS 5.x.latest, and it kept downloading the same podcasts over again, even if I had already listened to them.  Kept marking ancient (like years old) episodes as new.  Created a phantom podcast with no description and no episodes.  Stopped playing after the first one (I think that can be fixed by sorting in reverse order).  Crashed once or twice.  Then there are teh rumours about it downloading the same podcast multiple times over 3G, which would totally eat up my relatively small monthly data allowance.  So I gave up and went back to the music app in iOS 5.

beyondpod on droid is pretty killer, download or stream, autoprunes, update single or your whole playlist, great for driving/running. wife is getting her work blackberry replaced with a iph5 when they have enough to order, i'll play with it. (no jailbreaking of course, it's a work phone).

Got a call from my mobile provider (Virgin Australia) yesterday offering to waive the rest of my plan (iPhone 4) and upgrade to an iPhone5. Opted for the black one. Hopefully it turns out well!

haha, I found Beyondpod right towards the end of my android experience, when the trial ran out, it was either pay $7 for the app, or $300 for an iPhone, guess which one I picked :P

Too much $.  Droid Incredible 2 here.  Rooted, blazing fast, cyanogen mod, contacts in the cloud, the apps I want and cerberus anti-theft lojack.  Everything I could hope for in a phone and all for a great price.

If you are already invested in the Apple ecosystem (Ipad, Apple Tv, music w/ iTunes) then it would make sense to get an iPhone 5. (Main reason I upgraded from by Blackberry on launch day) If you aren't then you should stick with Android imo.

your preference is your own but i thought it important to note that iphone/ios supports 'cloud' contacts via google as well. all of my contacts are synced via google/exchange.

Obviously, I know that full well, no worries.  That being said, I bought a droid incredible about 2 years ago.  It died at the beginning of this summer and I got a replacement droid incredible 2 for $100 due to insurance.  This droid incredible 2 has a warranty of 1 year, which by the end I'll be able to get another one for another $100.  That totals to about $500 for 3 phones, over the span of about 5-6 years.  A lot better value than getting a $600 iPhone every year.

Also its android!  Cerberus is a hell of an app...

Oh Trent, I'm about to argue with you over the internet, it's futile, but for some reason I feel the neeeeeed to do it.

First off, if you have insurance, with my carrier, that $15 a month $15 * 20 months (lets just assume) = $300 + the $200 I assume you paid for a subsidized device + $100 for a replacement + $100 for 'another one' (I don't know what kind of mid-tier phone you'll be getting for only $100) = $700 over 5-6 years, ~$120/yr

Then your statement "getting a $600 iPhone every year" yep, that's what I do, throw out my year old iPhone and just go drop $600 for an unsubsidized one, just like you did with your phone, OH WAIT, NOBODY DOES THAT (except for people who don't care about money). Since the very first iPhone, there has been an option to get a subsidized iPhone for $200 for two years. Oh man, that's only $100 a year, a savings of $120 over 6 years you paid for your Droid's, and you got a subjectively worse phone from both a hardware and software standpoint.

Before you come in here and spout random nonsense. Please state some sort of facts other than 'best phone ever, don't waste money on iPhone'

/rant

Like I said, I'm sorry I had to do this, but sometime the keyboard warrior in me flares up, and there's nothing I nor anyone else can do to fix it.

I picked an iPhone 5 purely because it is the best phone on the market from a hardware standpoint, and I will flat out admit it is lacking in some areas, but overall I found this to be the best device for me, and in two years, this phone will still be worth the $300 I paid for it, while most android devices depreciate to the sub $50 range after two years (personal experience).

I like to think of myself as unbiased as possible, so when I see someone claim something is better than something else "just because I've used it and it's good" it infuriates me ._. I'm sowwy <3

i have insurance on my phone so i can get a new one for 100 if i lose mine or it gets broken out of warranty
apple care comes with every iphone so if mine has a fault within warranty period i get a new one for free (i'm on my second 4s fwiw)... glad you like your phone but at this point no company really offers any superior benefits. its all about hardware and software preference.

That was one of my main concern, good news it does that would have been a no go otherwise
lots of interesting feedbacks I didn't get in the reviews

Also is it just me or is Apple tactile screen still far better than any other? I find it more responsive  than anything I compared with, I would have expected all manufacturers to use the same technologie

Number one reason: Can't hook-up your mechanical keyboard to it.

Android is way more customizable and flexible.

iphone will just release another one next year.

No sd card slot. That is a big problem for me. I listen to music.

Apple's aggressive and controlling marketing schemes.

You need to use some sort of app store while android could just have the file dropped in and installed.

Android and Windows has a large selection and in many price ranges and styles depending on what you are looking for, but if you are looking for something with an Apple logo you are out of luck.

1) Can't use an iPhone unless jailbreak is out along with updated apps.

2) They changed the stupid port.

I really don't want to switch to Android, but Jellybean is mighty tempting. Too bad Android phones are so ugly and big. The perfect phone would be andoid os in an iphone body *sigh*

If I have a keyboard with me then I also have my laptop
