Title: Codeweavers Crossover 12 50% off
Post by: metalliqaz on Thu, 29 November 2012, 17:09:13
Does anyone use Crossover for Linux?  (Windows emulator, based on Wine)

Apparently they are selling it for 50% off this week with free upgrade to Crossover 12.0 when it is released next month.  So I think that's $20-$30 depending on how much support you want.  Version 11 was given away for free on Halloween but the upgrade to 12 has me interested.

They have pretty good support for things like video games (including Steam) and Office.  I'm assuming that version 12 will bring better multimedia support and support for the newest Office versions.

Steam will run natively in Linux soon, they are in beta testing atm, just fyi if you didn't already know.

Oh yea, I know they're porting steam.  Doesn't mean that each of the games will be ported, though :)

I've been using it pretty much since the beginning.  However, it is becoming less relevant all the time.  My main use was MS Office, Windows Media Player, Quicken, and rare need for IE.  All of those needs have eroded away, thanks to Star/Open/LibreOffice, better video support in Linux, and improving web standards thanks to Firefox and Chrome.  So I am seriously debating if I want to extend it for another year.  The game support is nice, but it is starting to become irrelevant too.  Most new games have to be played on Windows anyway.

I use Libreoffice on my main computer and I have to say, it just isn't anywhere near as good as Microsoft Office.  I want to like it, I really, really do.  I just can't.

Every time someone says this I wonder wtf is missing that I don't know about.  I never have any problem with it.

Well, perhaps it is because I use MS Office at work and I'm used to it.  But I think it is more than that.  I am always surprised by how slow LibreOffice runs on my relatively new PC.  The first few versions came with installers that were hopelessly broken (had to completely uninstall in order to upgrade).  Calc seems to have been designed to make common tasks require as many clicks as possible.

We are 100% Google Docs at work now and I have been using ODF formats for all personal stuff for a while now.  Some of the fancy features and formatting is lacking, but for regular stuff they work great.  Libre has been making strides recently.
