Title: TEXAS Geekhacker meetup
Post by: jdcarpe on Fri, 30 November 2012, 07:34:28
Our state. It's like a whole other country.

Is there any interest in getting together for a meetup? I know we are pretty far from each other geographically, but I would be willing to travel up to 350 miles. We could meet in a central location, like the Austin or San Antonio area. Or if there are several members in one area, like DFW, the few of us scattered could meet there.

For obvious reasons, this would be held after the holiday season. I'm thinking around January 12/13 or later.

Let me know what you think, fellow
TEXANS!

Don't mess with Texas!

Hope this meetup works out for y'all. Unfortunately I'm a bit far away.

It's too bad you don't live in Texas, KL. I would love to see that vintage SIG P226 of yours. You could shoot my Beretta 92FS and S&W 5906. :)

I can think of at least 2 or 3 folks who aren't active anymore. TexasFlood was a cool dude...haven't seen him around in a while.

I was just about to add, if anyone from other states wants to meet up as well, feel free to register interest here. We can be inclusive, rather than exclusive. Anyone from Louisiana, Arkansas, Oklahoma, eastern New Mexico?

But I would love to see him show up anyway, regardless of distance.

I'm looking forward to this regional meetup, but what I really want to attend is a CONVENTION. Anyone else want to see KeyboardCon 2013 this summer? We could have it in a central location (Chicago?), and invite retailers to sponsor it and have giveaways and such. Have reps from the manufacturers there, also, like Melissa and/or Ben from Signature Plastics, etc.

I know I risk derailing my own thread here, but I've just been thinking about it quite a bit lately.

Cons take real effort and lots of real money, too.

But interesting nevertheless.

Of course, I'll be bringing my two korean keyboards (assuming I do buy the 356 from MMB) to what seems to be austin.

Also, wanted to throw a possible option out there:  Lockhart.  Eat delicious BBQ at Black's or something.
Title: Re: TEXAS Geekhacker meetup
Post by: jdcarpe on Tue, 04 December 2012, 15:51:44
Not at Kreutz? :P We could always carpool to Lockhart from the meetup for a meal. :)
Title: Re: TEXAS Geekhacker meetup
Post by: tjcaustin on Tue, 04 December 2012, 15:54:31
See, that's the problem with Lockhart, there's like 4 great places to eat BBQ.  I just picked the one that a president requested sausage from.

Austin's got it's fair share of good eating, too.  The mexican place I can't think of the name of comes to mind, Trudy's I think?

Just had a mini-meetup with esoomenona, here in Odessa. We met for lunch at a local Mexican food restaurant. I brought my GH60 prototype and Poker with The_Beast plate in jdcarpurple treble alu case. Great conversation was had by all, and esoomenona left with a new set of vintage WYSE caps (in desperate need of a denture tab bath/retr0brite)!

How'd you walk in with the boards? When we had the Chicago meet, it was like *whistle whistle whistle* Oh look a KMAC... *clash of boards onto random table* OOOOOOOOOH KMAC!(remember this is when Korean boards were dreams to be had...so in August of last year. :P)
Title: TEXAS Geekhacker meetup
Post by: jdcarpe on Wed, 20 March 2013, 14:17:04
I carried them in a briefcase. Two 60% boards in carrying cases don't take a lot of space. I had my TNS in my truck, but I had to get back to work, so I didn't get a chance to show that one off. :D

Yeah, we had that at the Chicago meet as well. There was a gentleman that walked in to play some 9-ball and we were all talking about our boards... he was like.... "Uhmmmm, I don't mean to be rude, but WTF are you guys doing?"

A guy at another table looked at me funnily.

And then I was all, "FU. We are Geekhack mafia! You eat you lunch and don't worry about what's happening over here." Then I kicked his chair out from under him, and he ran out of the place crying.

If there had been more than 2 of us, there would be pics. :)

Sorry to disappoint. I just think it looks creepy for 2 guys to be taking pics of each other with their phones. We already had enough attention just from the keyboards at the table.

I'm not all too familiar with the layout of Texas yet. Where is Dallas from Odessa?

Head east from Odessa on I-20. Stop when you get to civilization. No offense to anyone in Abilene. :D

I'd love to have a sorting party for RainDrop (since they aren't presorted!), but I won't be available the weekends around when they should get here. :-).

Otherwise, perhaps we can arrange a tour of Das keyboard or gold touch or something?  Or maybe if we do it after GH60s come in, we can have a big keyboard building party?  Just some random ideas.
Title: Re: TEXAS Geekhacker meetup
Post by: esoomenona on Fri, 19 April 2013, 09:32:40
I was thinking a contest to see who can build or strip a keyboard the fastest. Maybe we could do that around GH60 time. Das would be interesting to tour. Also, I'm not sure how much everyone would like doing outdoor things, but I believe there are some caves with a waterfall near Austin that I'm interested in visiting.

Anyone else have any ideas or input?

We're talking. Austin might not be a bad idea, because she could visit her brother as well. Just go with whatever location you want and we'll try and come.

PS - We'll definitely be visiting Austin quite a bit after we move to Orlando, so if not this one, we will make it a point to meet up later.

I usually move back up to the Amarillo area during the summers, but I'm not this summer or I'd go! Although Brownwood is about as close to Amarillo as it is to where I am now.. Cleburne is a little closer.
