note that this is one-of-a-kind in that it's completely handmade. it's a bit like buying the positive mold for a key. the keys asura produces en masse will be cast from a mold that is made from a handmade key. he will cast the new keys by hand, but the keys themselves will not be hand-soldered and formed like this one is. in this way, its tiny imperfections are a bit of uniqueness that will never be duplicated by any other cap he makes. they are a bit like keshiki in japanese pottery, imperfections to some, to others a beautiful and unique landscape for one's fingers to follow.
Title: Re: Charity Auction #5: Asura Sterling Silver Keycap
Post by: asura on Wed, 05 December 2012, 14:25:34
That's the gist of it.  I have a "failed" key, that being where the .6mm wall is too thin for the wax injection process, so it's mould is scrapped and it has an "interesting" life ahead of it.  It's in the process of going through different textures and being my Guinea-pig key, it's got a brushed finish at the moment, and will be getting glass blasted some time over the weekend, after that, it'll be bright polished, and finally acid etched, though that won't be an option at the moment  ;)  When the poor thing is finally finished with it'll either be so worn as to be useless, and will find a temporary home in my scrap box.  Or, should it survive it's ordeals if'll find a permanent home on my board.

Hand making individual keys is a slow, slow process.  At least a day's work per-key, which is why when I start making them properly they'll be cast, as this reduces it down to a couple of hours per-key.  And (hopefully) every key will be perfectly uniform.

Though I'd have said wabi rather than keshiki?
Title: Re: Charity Auction #5: Asura Sterling Silver Keycap
Post by: mkawa on Wed, 05 December 2012, 16:09:42
keshiki seemed like the closest analog, but wabi more generally refers to the school of thought that leads one to value the keshiki of a piece rather than to look only for symmetry and perfection.

note: keshiki refers to the visual and textural imperfections of a piece of pottery, usually made by a master, who, it is assumed, cannot produce an exact replica, and hence keshiki also refers positively to the act of mapping out these imperfections, which define the piece and give it value.
Title: Re: Charity Auction #5: Asura Sterling Silver Keycap
Post by: asura on Wed, 05 December 2012, 17:55:04
I'd have felt (though I'm no expert on Japanese pottery or culture, I just know what I like when I see it and am always trying to learn) that because of the uniqueness in form as well as texture keshiki was intrinsic, or perhaps pre-assumed.  Yes, no two pieces would have an identical finish.  However as their aren't, and never will be, two pieces the descriptor becomes moot.  Though I suppose it works in exactly the same way if you swap invert it; by commenting on it's keshiki you are indicating that it belongs under the umbra of wabi.  Now I've just confused myself!

It's been... ohhh... seven years (?) since I actively studied any Japanese aesthetic culture, and then it was centred around architecture so I'm probably barking up entirely the wrong tree.

i think this discussion gets to the bottom of something i've been thinking about re: this cap. when i got this keycap in the mail, i stepped back for a second and said, "huh, well that's new". but, the profundity of that statement should not be underestimated. what's so cool about this cap is that it's a truly unique thing. keycaps, because you need so many to populate a board, are necessarily cast, and hence each is nearly identical, save for maybe a legending process. this cap is, from the beginning, something made to be, like a piece of master's pottery, a unique take on the keycap. it's not just that it's shiny, but it's that it's truly an artisan cap, made to be different from any other cap that might reside on the same keyboard, from any other cap made before it.

yes, it's shiny too, and the hallmark totally ups the cool factor, but that was my first impression ("this is something new"), and i think the most important thing for keyboard geekery as a whole. i am quite proud that we've reached this point, and i can't wait to see what's next out of everyone :D
