Title: Anybody into archery?
Post by: bear95 on Tue, 04 December 2012, 22:13:27
Cause it seems like an interesting alternative to sitting at a computer.

Used to be, years ago.

My father wanted to try and I said I'd go with him, and we ended up going for about 6 months.

It was fun :)

I used to bow hunt but it's super boring compared to rifle or black power hunting. However, I still setup some targets and shoot in the back yard if I'm in the mood

I was a competitive archer as a child. Nowadays I shoot an ancient recurve and compound in my basement a couple of times a week and am teaching the wife how to. Very enjoyable and inexpensive hobby (no... you do not need fancy equipment to be an accurate archer).

I haven't done it since I was a kid but I remember enjoying it.

...black power hunting.

?

I have no idea what that is, but it sounds severely offensive when taken out of context :P

Black powder? Hunting with ancient cannons?

Yes I'm fairly sure he meant "powder".

Edit: there are a LOT of alternatives to sitting at a computer that I enjoy. These enjoy swimming, hiking, biking, traveling and shooting at the range, among others.

I remember doing it in high school for a couple weeks during PE. I really enjoyed it and I was the best one on my team. I've always thought about getting a recurve bow and just shoot it in my back yard.

I shoot recurve, and go three times a week with a local club in SoCal. Thinking about practicing with the USC team soon as well. Started in March, and having a great time with it!

Helps with controlling the money I spend in GeekHack too. I look at some of these rare keys going for an exorbitant amount and admire the handiwork required to create them, or the rarity of the cap. I save the picture on my computer, then spend the $100 or so dollars it would take to acquire said cap and cop another dozen Carbon Impacts to use as competition arrows.

Currently using a Hoyt GMX riser, using 30# limbs with a 31" draw, so maybe 35# on the fingers.

So wait, it is supposed to be black powder hunting? I was being a bit ironic when i guessed that, I had no idea it was actually called that. Black powder hunting honestly sounds to me as if someone is carrying around a cannon with black powder and trying to shoot a deer with cannonballs.

That's pretty much what it is. In rifle season I use a 25-06 for open fields and for sitting in stands. For doing pushes, I use a 44 mag since it's a carbine, however almost everyone else uses a 30-06 since it's good at both.

Black powder rifles tend to be 50 cals, so yes, basically a small shoulder fired cannon

Used to shoot recurve.  Preferred field archery over target - especially useful if you are having health issues - shooting 20ish arrows compared to 60-70.

Sex?

I had a PSE Mark IV that had just been heavily customized that was stolen from my vehicle...really took the wind out of my sails. Also took my fencing gear and the pic of my girlfriend that was stuck onto my dashboard. That was a long time ago and I still want to get my hands around the sick bastard pencil-neck that jammed on it

Surprised it took someone that long.  Maybe it is a bit too obvious ;)

I did a beginners course a while back, now I've re-enrolled in another one with my girlfriend at the start of 2013 coz she's keen on archery and wants to "shoot sh!t up" yeah I know..a bit crazy.

I've had a 50# Bowtech Commander sitting at home for a little while now, probably screaming for more usage.

I also have a crabbing/fishing trip coming up with some mates, planning on taking the bow + bowfishing kit and having a go.

I started to get interested cause I found a bow shooting place right next to where I teach skiing. I thought it be great to go with friends who I work with.

Anybody selling an old bow? Or know where's a good place to get one? I'm currently looking at recurves on Amazon.

If you're serious about it, then I would recommend getting a Hoyt Excel Riser and Samick Privilege limbs if you wanna do target recurve. Just type "Viper1 Hoyt Samick" on google and click on the recommendation list that pops up.

Try to find a group to shoot with, and it's more fun that way.

I couldn't find the bow you mentioned. So far I'm thinking of getting the samick sage.
