Post by: razorsharpgears on Wed, 12 December 2012, 21:58:28
As the title says, I am interested in finding out which good keyboards come with this option.
Also, I was wondering if the community could give me some input on what keyboard to buy next.

Rosewills have detachable cable USB or PS/2  $55.00

You can probably buy 3 Rosewills for the price of a Filco Majestouch 2.

I am not endorsing Rosewill products.  I am just giving information.

Don't forget the OEM is the same... lol

Rosewill keyboards are really good and cheap, though you need to worry about some of the old models of their keyboards since they're known for having problems on the USB connector, which were fixed on the new units.

The USB connector was allegedly fixed on newer units.  I have a newer unit that I am testing as we speak.  I have used it for 13 days and it hasn't broken yet.  That doesn't really prove all that much :)

I am not testing it hard though as I have never unplugged the connector.  Frankly I am afraid to unplug the connector.  I don't want my only cherry red keyboard to break.

Later on when I have 5 cherry red keyboards I am testing then I might do the unplug/replug test.

If my Rosewil ever breaks u will all hear about it. :)

Ducky 1008 and 1008XM too.  Can't vouch for other models.

The only buckling spring boards with detachable cables are very old models (1391401, etc, which are sold used and only have a detachable PS/2 cable

Nope, the KBT aren't korean keyboards. Those are the Poker similar boards with backlighting. (a little googling wouldnt hurt ;) )

Normally people dont recommend korean keyboards in a regular keyboard diet, they are considered the creme of the crop  :))

EDIT: Korean keyboards are somewhat limited, hard to find stuff, so people dont usually say, "you want a 60% board? get a 356 mini kinda things"

The CMStorm QFR definitely; I have 2.

On a related note the WASD v2 TKL board has a detachable cable and similar cable routing to the QFR (on the underside of the case)

If you need it, you need it, but I consider a detachable cable to generally be a defect rather than a feature.

All but guaranteed to be the first point of failure.

And I particularly despise the tiny mini-USB plugs which are insanely flimsy and fragile.

I really like detachable cords because it allows me to easily switch out keyboards at work and home, but with that being said mini-B connections are ****ty I don't know why they don't just use normal USB ports.

Ducky DK9008G2 is deatchable.  Next keyboard depends on your budget.  Agree that QFR is a great deal, and comes with a variety of cherry switches to suit your preference.  And they've supposedly stopped overbranding them too.

The Key Cool 87 has a detachable USB. Not having one, I can't vouch for their quality, but they are similar to the QFR.

Because they want your keyboard to break 366 days after you buy it.

I think almost every decent keyboard comes with detachable USB. If you plug everything in right and make sure it doesn't move, then I don't see why your USB connection should break.  I move my keyboard to my friends house 3+ times a week, not a single issue for a while now.

Unfortunately there are a ton of reported issues with the connectors on those things breaking though.  Not sure if it's because it's detachable or something else.

No, but while not as difficult to get as a Korean board they aren't that common either. If you want something other than the standard black you may have to import it, though again, this is easier than the Korean boards.

They have a poker size board (Pure) and a compact TKL (Race).

Or what about modding a keyboard to support the detachable USB cable feature?

I wouldn't suggest that unless you know what  you are doing.  It shouldn't be too hard for the experienced electrical engineer.  It's adding a micro USB port that is accessible and creating a port where you can plug it in.  Just make sure you connect the correct pins and such, and solder correctly to eliminate any hot spots.

I think the hardest part of that mod would be modifying the case to hold the USB port. With that being said a couple people have done some really cool mods for just that scenario.

Yeah, agreed.  Anyone with access to a CNC milling machine should have no problem, or even perhaps design and mold a case themselves.  I wonder if anyone will ever make a billet aluminum case.  That would be pretty crazy.

How to modify a case to add a port:
1. Turn on soldering iron.
2. Crank the knob all the way up.
3. When it gets super hot, stick that baby into the case where you want to add your new port.
4. Watch plastic melt away.
5. Lather, rinse, repeat as neccessary.

This actually works better with a woodburning iron.  But anything really hot will do it.

Back in the olden days ppl would come over and do all kinds of crazy mods on my telephone, C64, whatever.   They just melted holes and added ports wherever they wanted.

There are a lot of aluminum cased boards now, 356, KMAC, typenow, poker, filco, etc.. Pretty cool stuff going around these days.

Yeah, but a lot of decent keyboards come with it too.  I mean, we can argue about this for days, but whatever. lol

I know there are aluminum cases but they are not billet right?  That means they are cut from a single block of aluminum.

I can solidly recommend the quickfire rapid. I own the brown version and I can say that it is simply amazing for the price. Keep on a look out for occasional deals from cooler master.
I got mine for 30% off with a code.
