Me doesnt wanna participate, but I wanna know why 42, 4:20 and 13 are banned LOL :p :p
Well, Dan can say, I STARTED IT :p :p :p
6 - I've lived at more number sixes than any other number.
Well, Dan can say, I STARTED IT :p :p :p
Not sure if serious...
I like the #23 (all that mystery illuminati stuff and many more reasons...). It's a fascinating number! ;)
Curiosities of the number 23
* The physical biorhythm cycle is said to be 23 days. It takes 23 seconds for blood to circulate through the human body. The male and female each contribute 23 chromosomes during conception. A full turn of the DNA helix occurs every 23 angstroms. The number of joints in the human arm is 23. There are 23 vertebrae in the human body. Tantrists believe the male sex cycle is 23 days.
* Shakespeare was born on April 23. Shakespeare died on April 23. Two 23's equals 46 and, that's how old Shakespeare was when the KJV was published. Grab a King James Version of the Bible and turn to Psalm 46. Count 46 words and you arrive at the word 'shake'. Turn to the end of the chapter and count 46 words backwards and the word you end on is 'spear'.
* The Ancient Egyptians hailed the New Year on July 23 - the day Sirius rises behind the sun.
* The ideal orbit, Clarke's Orbit, for a satellite is 23,000 miles above the earth.
* The first prime number wherein both of the digits are prime and add up to another prime number is 23.
* The 23rd letter of the alphabet, W, has 3 points up and 2 points down.
* Two-thirds or, 2/3, is equal to .666.
* The first Morse code transmission is reported to have been "What hath god wrought?". A Biblical quote from Numbers 23:23.
* Alexander the Great was 23 when he cut the Gordian Knot and Caesar is reported to have been stabbed 23 times. The Knights Templar had 23 Grand Masters.
* The "Day the Music Died" was February 3 or, 2-3. This was of course the day Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and the Big Bopper died.
* Devin Hester, whose jersey number is 23, becomes the first person to return the opening kickoff for a touchdown in a Super Bowl ( XLI ).

My favorite number is Android. It is because I love the IOS system so much and how beautifully it works on the Nokia Lumia 920.

That is some christmas Spirit!
7 became my prefered number because I once realized that most of the time track 7 of any album tends to be my favourite.
As for the mathematic part, 7 is 3 times 2 plus 1, and that is something!
I like the number 1216. My birthday is 12-16 and that's why you should give me this clack. It's a birthday present.
Or if you prefer, being in the UK: My favorite number is 1612 as my birthday is 16-12. Give me that clack as a birthday present.
Set x to be 0.99999...
_
x = 0.9 Then, multiply both sides by 10:
_
10*x = 9.9 Then, subtract x and its value from both sides:
_ _
(10*x)-x = 9.9 - 0.9
9*x = 9 Then, divide both sides by 9:
x = 1
And this shows that x is equal to 1 and x was initially also set to be 0.99999... etc. Thus: 1 = 0.99999...

Why would you use Month-Day-Year?! Day-Month-Year makes so much more sense!
I like your subtle attempts to persuade me!
My fav number is 14.
I was born on the 14th day of December, the last 2 numbers of my home and mobile number are 14 and it's double as lucky as 7 :p
I like 1, because of its properties. Many things are actually equal to 1. It has some interesting properties and can be used for all kinds of 'shinanigans'. Below is a brainteaser.
0.9999999 etc is equal to 1, and here is why. A line above a number (vinculum) is is a way to write a repeating decimal: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vinculum_%28symbol%29 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vinculum_%28symbol%29)Code: [Select]Set x to be 0.99999...
_
x = 0.9 Then, multiply both sides by 10:
_
10*x = 9.9 Then, subtract x and its value from both sides:
_ _
(10*x)-x = 9.9 - 0.9
9*x = 9 Then, divide both sides by 9:
x = 1
And this shows that x is equal to 1 and x was initially also set to be 0.99999... etc. Thus: 1 = 0.99999...
One can thus say I also like 0.999999... indefinitely.
Edit: Who said number theory wasn't ever going to be useful. :p Also, additional math joke:
I got .99 problems but any number ain't one...
That seems flawed to me. Why is there still a variable when you state that x = .9 repeating? Fyi, it is not a variable. It is a constant.
That should essentially read:
x = .9
You didn't use 0.999 indefinitely. You are attempting to prove that 0.9 is equal to something
10*.9=9.9
You eliminated x here, thus also your possibilities to show that x is also equal to something else which is the point of this exercise. proving that 0.9 is equal to 0.9 is far more insignificant than showing that 0.999... is equal to 1.
9.9-.9=9.9-.9
9=9
My birthday was ok.. my drinks for my birthday were a rather big let down due to people being so rude by saying they would attend and not attending.
First off, happy late birthday. How was your's? I filled up on churrascurra meats yesterday for an early birthday dinner.
Secondly, thank you for that bouncing birthday present :P

Three errors in your math there. Just messing with your head until you figure out the actual reasoning behind it.
Hah, so I did that exact thing with my favorite number and .9 repeating is now silly and entertaining instead of boring.
104 because I love the winkey and the tenkey :)

I am fairly certain you still haven't understood the proof, as it can't be done with just any number.

D20 is where it's at.
I wish I had some special number that had something was worthy of a clack.Google 'big bang theory 73'. 8)
But it's simply 73. 7 and 3 were my lucky numbers, and then when I joined hockey as a kid my jersey number was 73. Since then it's just been my thing.
But even so, it's not why it would be my favorite number. Don't want to add everything about a number to try and make it more special. :)I wish I had some special number that had something was worthy of a clack.Google 'big bang theory 73'. 8)

You beat my edit, was adding why it would have been my number. Not taking from your reasons dude.
The Square Root of 3
I’m sure that I will always be
A lonely number like root three
The three is all that’s good and right,
Why must my three keep out of sight
Beneath the vicious square root sign,
I wish instead I were a nine
For nine could thwart this evil trick,
with just some quick arithmetic
I know I’ll never see the sun, as 1.7321
Such is my reality, a sad irrationality
When hark! What is this I see,
Another square root of a three
As quietly co-waltzing by,
Together now we multiply
To form a number we prefer,
Rejoicing as an integer
We break free from our mortal bonds
With the wave of magic wands
Our square root signs become unglued
Your love for me has been renewed

Mine is 7 because I've always thought it was lucky. Plus my birthday is 8/15 and 8-15=7, however if you add 8+15 you get disqualified lol

Your maths is terrible.
I like the constant e=2.71828. At school I got tons of problems that involved the distribution of prime numbers, and Mr. "e" was alway there :'-(. I used to hate it the first months, but after the first year I started loving it.
If I win, I will give this keycap to "Batmann". I love his avatar ;-)
"Bonne chance, mon pot ;-)"
I like the number 21, and numbers containing 2&1 usually in a series. I've found it used in so many situations. It's a triangular number, composite number, and a number in the Fibonacci sequence.
Also,
21 - Blackjack
21 - Hello, buy me a drink
21st - The current century
And in 2001 - Hello Dave...
Lastly 12-21-2012 is not the end of the world...

Well actually "maths" is borne of the short form of "mathematics" which is "math" so what you really said is your "mathss" is terrible, owing to maths necessarily being a pluralized form of "math," therefore, your grammar is terrible.

I'm afraid you forgot this:
21 grams - the weight of your soul
That counts as maths :) The 100 post count isn't a hard rule, if you have been a quiet member for a long time and are near 100 posts then you can enter :)
My favorite number is 313 because it's symmetrical in both decimal and binary form (100111001). 313 is classified in many form of prime types (a long prime for example, longweight) and it is considered a happy number as well.
Happy Number Sequence
32 + 12 + 32 = 19
12 + 92 = 82
82 + 22 = 68
62 + 82 = 100
12 + 02 + 02 = 1
Oh, one more thing: he's The King of Time.

p.s. the ascii drawing took a really long time to get right. Quote this to see how crazy it is
I've always said that if it was really one, you'd write '1'. But is it actually equivalent to 1? I would say it's infinitely close to 1, so yes it is.Did you watch the video :p
Hey guys, every explanation I've read so far is to do with maths and its nothing personal. The explanation you all are giving is something that you yourself didn't come up with. Share something personal instead you Einsteins! :D
Lmao. Mine was the only post that had the .gif removed.

I was born on Friday the 13th so I get disqualified for liking the number 13. Thanks bro.If that's true it should be legitimate. A lot of folk value birthday numbers as favorites.
He also joined on May 13th, which also happened to be a Friday in 2011. Heh, the coincidences.
10^35 mYou meant 10^-35 m.
You only need to know a tiny bit of Calculus to understand this one, (pic below). As you can see, my favorite number is 5, but that's just for the joke.I always loved Math jokes but for a limit to exist the function must be continuous and approach the same value from both sides.
I'll bite. My favorite is Avogadro's number, 6.0221415*10^23 because it confused most my Chemistry classmates.10^35 mYou meant 10^-35 m.You only need to know a tiny bit of Calculus to understand this one, (pic below). Thus, limits do not exist over a vertical asymptote but only when approached from the x-value from one of the two sides.
Examples approaching the value from the positive and negative side.
lim x->8+ 1/(x-8) = infinity
lim x->8- 1/(x-8) = negative infinity
You're missing the point of the joke..... good job pooping my party thoughNo, just poking.

B.. but why the contest aren't end before the world's end???)) lol, maybe it is all just a cruel joke :( ((
I wanted to say golden ratio, but it was already taken :( Damn you!!
Anyways, 1729 is pretty cool. It's one of the 3 only numbers where the sum of its digits multiplied by the reverse is equal to the number itself: 1+7+2+9 = 19, 19*91=1729.
1729 is divisible by the sum of its digits in the decimal, octal, and hexadecimal number systems!
Also, it's the smallest number that is the sum of 2 different sets of positive cubes: 12^3 + 1^3, and 9^3 + 10^3.
Baltimore, Maryland was founded in Year 1729, and the possibly largest comet ever discovered was discovered in, you guessed it, 1729.
The Treaty of Seville, which gave Britain control of Gibraltar among other places, was signed in 1729, ending the Anglo-Spanish war.
Where'd you get that picture of Halverson?
So much wikipedia in this thread.
So much wikipedia in this thread.Yeah, I'll be honest and say I obviously used Wikipedia for the historical parts of the number, but believe it or not, I knew 1729's mathematical 'significance' from prior knowledge, I think it was a book from those Scholastic book orders...
cms725, you're being a little bit too sensitive :) . I used wikipedia for the math information in my post. It is all for fun ;)Ah, my bad man. Misunderstood the meaning of your post. All in good fun.

I wouldn't be able to name the mathematician without Googling it... my memory isn't THAT good.
Anyways, of course there's going to be so much Wikipedia in this thread. If that's a problem I'll remove my post.
Guiseeee 5318008 though!! Put it in an old school calculator and flip it upside down

Thanks longweight!
My dad was actually laid off from his job this year. He's 62 though so he was close to retiring age. His hobby has always been gardening and landscaping so he's doing a little business of his own following that. Right now he's making Christmas wreaths and other decorations and selling them to a few local stores, mostly restaurants which like to dress up to attract customers. My mom has a fairly good pension since she worked at the same big company since the day she finished college. My dad on the other hand has nothing and he lost a lot of money a long time ago when the Nortel stocks lost their value.
I worked for two years between high school and college to save up money to go to school without having to work at the same time. I also didn't mind having a little break between them, but I'm glad that I went back. I actually got into mechanical keyboards because of school, where I did some transcription work for a deaf student. Most of the keyboards that I got during my school time were from trading Magic the Gathering cards. I traded them for a TG3, a Das, a Cherry G80 with reds, 4 Topre 87U silents, an SSK, a few trackballs and a bit of cash. I then ended up selling many of those for money in the classifieds here on geekhack (it was easier to do trades for spare keyboards that people have and don't want than for money and then find somebody else who wants to buy that stuff later). If it wasn't for that I'd probably have a lot less keyboard related stuff.
But anyways, I don't want people to worry about me or anything, at least not financially. We're doing fine and my brother and I both finished college this year so we're both working now and can help support everyone if needed. At the moment we're both still living at home and one of our grandmothers lives with us too. We're a pretty tight knit family and my brother is like my best friend. We have lots of the same hobbies and never argue with each other.
Edit: I've also been spared from wallethack because I use the Colemak layout so I'm immune to temptation from Qwerty key set group buys! I use to participate in the novelty key group buys, but they're usually pretty cheap and I've even stopped going for those too now.
