Title: Rainbow Keycaps Bottom Out Distance
Post by: Hyde on Thu, 20 December 2012, 13:23:38
Hello my girlfriend bought this recently:

http://www.ebay.ca/itm/104-PBT-Rainbow-Side-printed-keycaps-for-MX-cherry-Switches-Keyboard-/290818408757?pt=PCA_Mice_Trackballs&hash=item43b620c135&_uhb=1#ht_2701wt_1220
OR
http://www.vendio.com/stores/E-sports-Gaming-equipments/item/pbt-key-caps-87-104-full-set/104-pbt-rainbow-key-caps-engra/lid=30529650 (Same item different link)

And I thought those are OEM profile?  Because after we install it and started using it, we find the bottoming out distance is a bit shallower than the stock Filco keycaps.

Is this normal?  Has anyone tried this set before and have the same experience?

The amount of travel you have with different keycaps is related to

A: How tall the keycap is.  OEM profile is supposed to be 11.8mm (12mm profile)

B: How thick the reinforcement bars are.  Some keycaps do not even have reinforcement bars.

C: How long the "stem" or "mount" or whatever u want to call it, is.

D: If the keycap is made at a screwey angle that could affect things too.

Thank you for reporting this!  I was thinking of buying those same keycaps.  Travel distance is important to me!

If you could post an upskirt shot of your original keycap vs. one of the new keycaps side by side, make sure they are both the same exact key, that would help us to evaluate the situation.

Er, a photo of the underneath of the keycap, just to clear up any possible confusion and before anyone has cause to get too embarrassed ;)

The part of the keycap that hangs down and flares outward is the Skirt.

Altho I must admit I was really looking forward to finding out if his hot Canadian gf was Cherry MX compatible.  :p

I always wonder why they put mx black on that one.  Would've bought it for my g/f if it was any other switch colour  :(

B: How thick the reinforcement bars are.  Some keycaps do not even have reinforcement bars.

does that mean, that bottoming out hits against these bars?
i'm planning to experiment with shortening stems and been wondering where the bottoming actually happens

All I know is if you have O-rings or Crashpads installed then you bottom out into the reinforcement bars and it is soooooooooo awesome!   It allows a nice soft "landing".  It is the only reason I can type this msg right now.

Reinforcement bars rule!!!!

AFAIK most keycaps have the reinforcement bars except for DoubleShots.

Great!
I think this is where the contact point should be, otherwise a metal plate would only be partially useful, you'd be hitting into the switch bottom part which sits on the pcb.
