That is an old Apple Extended keyboard, one of the last ones that Apple made with Apls switches. How do you suppose this was done? Did this guy just hack-saw that part of the circuit board off or what? I have wanted to do this with one of mine but I am afraid to.
-
I wouldn't do something like that unless I was VERY confident that I could pull it off. (unless I truly didn't give a crap about the keyboard)
Where did you get the photo? Perhaps you could invite the modder here to clue us in as to how he did it.
-
The Korean site, KBMania that Whiskey was talking about. Check it out - they have some great pics of really cool stuff on it.
-
Considering there is another keyboard that is actually hooked up to the computer...there is zero indication (at least from that photo) that he pulled off the mod while retaining a functional keyboard.
-
And all the comments were in Korean, so it could conceivably been a "don't try this at home" post. Still, I have an Apple keyboard that I am willing to lose to try this, but I don't know what to do with the traces on the circuit board. Shuld I connect them or tape them off or what? These questions are why I have not made my own HHKB with Alps sliders.
-
I think dealing with the circuit board is the easy part. What are you going to do cosmetically to the housing?
-
I'd build a new one. First, I would think that i would want to make sure it doesn't start a fire. I'd deal with the board then build the case around it. My brother is really good with fab work, and he loves a challenge. So what should I do with the board? should I connect the traces or not?
-
Well, "connecting the traces" is pretty vague. What you need to do is maintain the same logical connections (or lack of connectivity) that you have when none of the numpad keys are pressed. If that means circuits are open, you want to make sure they remain that way.
-
That is why I won't try this mod - messing with circuit boards is something I know is way above my realm of understanding. I would inadvertently burn down my house with my cats, pregnant girl and computer inside - not my ideal outcome just for being an elitist.

Necro... err... Neato.

It would appear warakawa is attempting to make many posts of little value. Note the presence of a signature.
It is possible that once success has been attained at putting posts everywhere, advertisements for some other site may appear in the signature space.

iMav would never allow that type of blatant exploitation...or would he? :)

I think he's on the fast track to being the first person to get banned from Geekhack.

I'd think not lol.

I'd think so lol.

Well, at least we are getting a history lesson on the beginnings of Geekhack.
-
there's actually a moderator on this forum????
Yup. He just isn't normally required to do much, as the membership, up until now, has been pretty much self-regulating and chill. The few flare-ups between members have damped out pretty quickly, and trolling hadn't been much of an issue.
-
Thank you imav for making him and his lame "free tibet" posts go away. I mean, I'm all for free tibet and all... but seriously what a troll.
By the way what was the original mod btw? Tenkeyless apple extended kb?

Dang, xphat's a journalist. Note the missing serial comma after girl.
Hey journalist, can you please upload the image? I get a 404-bandwidth exceeded-no hotlinking image with no keyboards appearing.

Enh, even in journalism, the Oxford comma is not always used. I'm of the opinion that it's redundant; the and is enough of a break between the items.
-
I like video games, keyboards and mice and peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.
See why the comma is useful? :)

That's where I would actually use the serial comma. If it adds clarity to the sentence, I'm all for it- but I think it usually detracts or has no effect.
