Title: How do you like your Tofu!
Post by: TheQsanity on Thu, 27 December 2012, 01:45:58
I recently stayed at the Rio in Las Vegas and they had an amazing Chinese restaurant .

Had some Tofu, it was really good...

It was soft deepfried tofu, with ground shrimp fried in the top of it. Kinda like the ones you find in Dim Sum.
When I find the name of it I will let you guys know.

Question is... How do you like your Tofu!

I love it in a Thai stir fry. And also can't have miso soup without it!

I like to marinate it in soy sauce, hosin sauce, sake, rice wine vinegar, peanut / sesame oil, and chunky peanut butter. Then drop it in a pan with oil to sear the edges and then bake it.

See my avatar.

Honestly - it will gross you out - I just like eating silken Tofu right out of the carton [after obviously draining the water] and eating it as I would flan or rice pudding.

Maybe a step up in firmness I'll just put a little high quality soy sauce on it after it has reached room temperature.

Dante what do you consider a high quality soy sauce?

Pan fried with nutritional yeast and just about any steamed veggie on the side =)

All these fried methods are the ways that I enjoy tofu too, but I will add my own method that I've found to be pretty decent. Marinate thin sliced firm tofu in a nice balsamic vinegar with some Italian herbs and spices over night so the tofu can absorb the flavor, then pan sear it with olive oil till it gets a little crispy and enjoy.

My three favourite ways of eating Tofu are:

1. Mapo Tofu

2. I'm not exactly sure what its called in English, its basically called Marinated Tofu or something like that. They take the broth that you normally use for some meats and cook Tofu in it instead, the taste gets all in the tofu and its quite delicious. Here's what it looks like on google image search:
https://www.google.com/search?q=%E9%B9%B5%E6%B0%B4%E8%B1%86%E8%85%90&um=1&hl=en&authuser=0&biw=1366&bih=581&ie=UTF-8&tbm=isch&source=og&sa=N&tab=wi&ei=GhTdULyOJ8TcqAHV14CQBQ

3. Tofu fa, umm basically Tofu Flower, its a dessert dish. Its basically super soft tofu served cold in syrup. It pretty much feels like feeling slippery smooth pure sugar but its toned down so its not sweet to insane levels but its pretty much a softer toned down sweetness by the tofu, like your eating diluted essence of sweetness

When I'm cooking though and I don't want to spend too much effort, a favourite way for me is to pan fry the tofu part way, let it sit aside, then pan fry soy sauce marinated ground pork. When the pork juices and marinade start to get released, I put the tofu a long with the juices released by the tofu into the wok as well and mix them all together and let it stew for a bit. Kind of like Mapo Tofu but without the spiciness of having to prepare the sauce.

The best tofu I have had, I think it was battered and deep-fried. Served with a stir-fried veggies in a green curry sauce.

I heard Tofu was bad for you because of the something something- estrogen...

Many of soy’s health benefits have been linked to isoflavones—plant compounds that mimic estrogen. But animal studies suggest that eating large amounts of those estrogenic compounds might reduce fertility in women, trigger premature puberty and disrupt development of fetuses and children.

sounds like the farm raised salmon issue, where mercury is high cuz these farm raised salmon are being fed their own mercury laced brothers and sisters, it could be the type of soy that is the issue, i mean soy beans are grown with monsonto stuff right? so that may be the case. either way at least 1billion ppl consume soy every other day in the east and aside from sumo wrestlers, asians are the pillar of health, i mean heck it's still sad but my grandma passed away this year and she was 106, and that was due to a fall and a bad hip, who knows how much longer she could have had in china.

Asians are NOT the pillar of health.. They're not obese like Americans, but you'd be ignorant if you think they were at all healthy.... The amount of "frying" and "salt" the general asian population eats is maddening.

aborigines are..

China specifically has extremely POOR health.. It is however "under-reported" as the population is too large to keep reliable statistics, and there's the government issue, where they don't care...

China has historically very high rates of diabetes and heart disease.  Though I don't think that's cuz of the soy

I reread the Soy report, the only criticism I can see in the report is that the high doses they used in Rats arn't very high doses in a human..

Now, mind you, a HIGH dose for a Human IS CERTAINLY POSSIBLE in today's diet,, and can be inadvertently done to one self.

found this cool chart graph thing

http://www.healthypeople.gov/2020/chart.aspx?raceId=2&ageId=16&genderId=3&race=Asian+or+Pacific+Islander&age=All+ages&gender=Both&raceId_2=10&ageId_2=16&genderId_2=3&race_2=All+races&age_2=All+ages&gender_2=Both

i guess asian is too much, it should be asians and american indians are the pillar of health then, go play around with the chart it's fun.

also an episode about frying and how if fried properly, fats aren't absorbed into food (even tho it's never proven that eating fatty food, equals fatty ppl, it's always a coorelation, not a proven cause and effect)

The funniest experience I have with Tofu was at PF Changs.  Someone ordered some sort of tofu and we convinced my cousin to try it.  He started chewing and the look on his face was priceless.  He said it was like a "crusty explosion."  He won't touch tofu to this day.  I quite enjoy it however.

Deep fried and crispy on the outside, soft and melts in your mouth on the inside.

Some sweet chilli sauce with peanuts and shredded cucumber strips.

pretty good.

tofu's flavor itself is VERY VERY mild, it's essentially the "Jello-Original-Generations",
