Title: IBM Model M with ASUS Essentio CM6730-US-2AD
Post by: Buttmonkey on Tue, 15 January 2013, 01:03:20
Hello. I was thinking of getting an IBM Model M keyboard. My computer is an ASUS Essentio CM6730-US-2AD, and it has one dual-purpose (can be used for both keyboard and mouse) PS/2 port, but I don't know if it will actually work or not or if I need one of those PS/2 to USB converters. I've heard of issues of the Ms not working on modern motherboards because they draw too much power, including Asus motherboards. Does anyone know if, for this particular PC, I'd need a PS/2 to USB converter or not?

According to a Crucial Memory Scan, I have an Asus CM6630_CM6730_CM6830 motherboard. But, it also says that's the computer model number, so...

maybe you'd want to acquire a unicomp keyboard? it does work on any modern pc.

Just get a Unicomp board with USB. There's no advantage to using PS/2 for a Model M, since it doesn't have NKRO.

Maybe. That would be more expensive, however, and I've also heard of some differences between the Unicomp keyboards and the original Model Ms.

I didn't say there was any advantage. I'm just asking if anybody here knows if it will work as-is on this particular computer or not, or if I should get an adapter.

No, the Unicomps are not the exact same.
It may or may not work. Asus likes to use low quality components exactly where they shouldn't. The way their PS/2 port is arranged is normal, so you just connect directly. (Unless you have an M5/M13, then you need a Y-cable.) However, no guarantees on providing enough power.

I have used old IBM Model Ms on 3 different Asus motherboards with absolutely no problems ever.

You mean if I have one of those combo mouse/keyboard ports? Yeah, I have that. I think you're talking about particular Model Ms though.

I suppose I can simply get an M and an adapter just in case, try using PS/2, and if it works, great, if not then crack out the adapter.

Yes, well, some people haven't had such fortune.
