Title: McDonald's computers for applying have mechanical keyboards?
Post by: Rhinofeed on Fri, 18 January 2013, 23:59:30
I went into my McDonald's tonight and looked at their keyboard. Then I tried out the keyboard on their computers for applying. It kinda felt like a Cherry MX Brown or Cherry MX Black... is it true?

I think he's referring to those computer stands used for recruitment, used by all of the ****ty service industry here in the US.

I haven't seen a station in a McD's in a while. Next time I see a public application station might have to see what they are working with.

I wouldn't be surprised if there were a few members who carry a keycap puller with them at all times :)

Yeah, you can find good keyswitches in all sorts of odd places. The self-serve shipping station at the UPS store had Cherry blues.

Lots of places use Cherry G80 8113, 8200 and 11900 I see quite often. 99% of the time they are only lasered version though, so nothing exciting. The best keycaps are found at Delta stations in the airports ;)

I wasn't trying to get a job there or anything, just interested in the keyboard of course. ;)

The keycaps were definitely lasered, sadly.

Next time I go there I'll try to nab a picture, except I don't have a proper keypuller. What's the best makeshift puller? XD

paperclips work pretty well, but i found a small spring with a hook on one end to also be pretty useful ;000

Your fingers make a great key cap puller.

it takes about one second to remove a 1.25x modifier with a puller or appropriate tool

unless you have tiny little alien lady fingers it is going to take substantially longer to do this with just your hands

Advanced Auto Parts has boards with MX Brown switches, and I think the McDonald's keyboards are Data 911 boards with MX Blacks, but I'm not 100% on that...

like i said, tiny little alien lady fingers.

either that, or you don't have a set of cherry profile keycaps.

I recently flew with United out of the UK, they had this keyboard with cherry blacks, it had a 75% layout with no f-row, with a numpad like a TK and a touchpad smashed on there. I was so tempted to steal i t.

This doesn't work with an Apple Extended Keyboard.

When I went to Dublin, I walked past at least 100 check in desks, each with a 75% board as described and black SP doubleshots.

I always carry a little keypuller around, if there's a Desko for some reason in the UK or a board with 1.25 cherry mods. :D

Looks that way. Guess it would keep everything clean/easy to clean.
Also, if it is rubber, probably acts as a nice silencing tool.

In police cars its referred to as a 'blood splatter guard.'  Also supposed to make it slightly tactile.
Guess the one I got from eBay you posted should have one then. I'll be sure to post about it if so.

the only reason i mentioned it was for that reason:  it would be great at silencing things, but more prudently at absorbing shock / impact.  does it negatively impact the overall feel, though?

IIRC, it adds a ton of weight and makes the keys feel icky.

All that and its probably sufficiently splash-proof given how the its put together.

It doesn't feel half bad even with the rubber spill protector, actually. Pretty cool that they had doubleshots! (definitely made me want to nab the caps, hah)

Yes. Yes it is. It has such a strange key layout.

I've always wanted to see what the Delta keyboards are the agents use.  Never had an opportunity yet to get behind a desk and pull a cap to see, but eventually I'll find one when stuck in ATL at 3am...

They do have pretty keycaps, I wouldn't mind a set.  Haven't seen any show up on ebay or anywhere yet though.

So people won't steal it - very difficult to replace the keycaps.
