Title: Soon to be a Topre owner...
Post by: jabar on Sun, 27 January 2013, 18:03:05
with a gently-used HHKB Pro 2.

It will be the most I've spent on a single keyboard and I'm still a bit cautious about my expectations. Will post pictures once I get her home.

Certainly as a result I will need to scale back my keyboard collection. Not looking forward to it but several of them haven't had a lot of activity recently. Right now my ergo clear and black boards have seen a lot of use.

Just give the topre board a few days before you make a final judgment.  You will probably be disappointed at first.  But if you use it for a few days (without using another keyboard) and then try to switch to a different switch, you will find you really appreciate the topre switch.

Enjoy the HHKB. I love mine. It does take some getting used to if you have never used topre before but like one of the posts said, give it a few days before making a judgment about it. I love the sound of my HHKB. Also, it is so compact i can take it anywhere. Even in libraries it isn't too loud. Let us know what you think! Congratulations and welcome to the club...we have jackets. Not really.

Exactly my experience. I went Cherry -> Topre -> Cherry, and realized that Topre was perfect for me and sold all my Cherry boards.

Crappy cell phone images incoming...

It came with the red ESC key and the carrying case which really emphasizes its portability. I really need to learn this function layer before I go into full dark room mode.

First impressions: The Topre switches do feel like a membrane keyboard but with a much smoother tactile response. Bottoming out is virtually silent, probably on account of dampening from the membrane domes. Definitely nothing Cherry does resembles the Topre feel at all, unless a MX Red was modified to depress into a ball of tapioca... or a firm breast.

Oh no...

I like Cherry MX boards. My favorite switch is probably MX Reds, and I like Greens for what they do. Ergo Clears are a cool mod which makes Browns redundant, and I like the bright click-clack of Blues. There are still switches that I will eventually explore and I look forward to doing so.

However, I can't imagine swapping my HHKB out. It is after all a membrane keyboard but it is such a pleasure to type on. Why must I feel compelled to further my Cherry collection when all I really desire is right in front of me?

it is not a membrane keyboard, it is a capacitive keyboard with rubber domes which are most commonly found in boards with membranes (imav came up with 'RDOMS' -- rubber dome over membrane switch -- but it has yet to really take off. i like to use it):) hate to be nitpicky but we are nerds around here.
maybe it's time to look at a realforce next

Just be careful not to "delude" yourself into accepting something that deep down "you don't really like"

But see, you've already spent alot of money on it... so if you DON"T like it... it is a very hard pill to swallow...

HOWEVER, if you create a false opinion simply to cover ^^ that up, it's an even GREATER waste of money.

Many people on this forum fall into that category....

I'm curious how much a korean/Japan topre custom with an aluminium casing would cost. 600USD?

If the Red-MX's could imitate a Firm Breast I'll buy at least 10 keyboards.  Unfortunately only the Silent Realforce Keyboard can give you that feeling.  :p

You know I bought a used HHKB a year or so ago and it was the best keyboard investment I have made so far. By far my favorite keyboard!

I had a HHKB for over a year. I never really thought it was worth the money and i kept flirting with the idea of selling it. Over the past month i got it out and have been using it more and more. I like it the more i type with it. The feel of the keys is wonderful and i do admit there are times that i want my cherry mx keyboards or Alps but i can't see myself ever selling this one. It is worth the investment for me because i do a lot of typing. I have also gotten used to the arrow keys. I still think it is overpriced but it is a wonderful keyboard and i am glad i kept it.

Just now told a "normal person" how much I spent on a keyboard last night. The reaction was a mixture of dismay and pity. LMAO

Everyone spends a bit too much on their hobby.  These keyboards aren't as bad as what I see some people spending on bicycles, cameras, gaming PCs, RC vehicles...

I swapped out the HHKB for my Filco Linear-R and boy what a difference! I notice most the change in layout more than the difference between MX Reds and Topre... I do really like MX Reds but they are definitely a different beast.

I love the Unix-y left Ctrl and backpace location on the HHKB. Wish I could do that with every keyboard without using a software remap utility.

The reason I swapped out the HHKB for now is that this is the second time I had a series of BSODs immediately after boot. It only happened with the HHKB plugged in once previously, and my computer has had zero BSOD problems ever. Could it be an issue with the keyboard over USB? I use USB to PS/2 adapters (fortunately my ASUS board still has a legacy PS/2 port) for every other keyboard and never had that issue, and when I previously swapped out the HHKB for a PS/2-adapted board, the BSODs went away. Still bizarre to attribute a BSOD problem to a keyboard, and to have it occur so sporadically (and seldom). There were USB issues on my mobo model so it could be that.

Anyway, I look forward to getting my HHKB back on-board and for my incoming Phantom which will provide the option of a more desirable layout.
