Been to that site a few times but never realize they have a rating system on switches.
http://mechanicalkeyboards.com/mechanical_switches.php
So judging by this chart.
Best Gaming Switchs:
MX Red - 8.91
MX Brown - 8.61
Topre 30g - 8.40
Topre 45g - 8.36
MX Black - 8.28
Best Typing Switchs:
MX Blue - 8.78
Buckling Spring - 8.78
MX Green - 8.67
MX Brown - 8.45
Topre 45g - 8.41
Most Balanced Switchs:
MX Brown - 8.48
MX Red - 7.78
MX Blue - 7.76
Black ALPS - 7.73
Buckling Spring - 7.35
Obviously these rating will change all the time, but at the moment it sounds like the most popular switch is indeed MX Brown making high rankings on all 3 categories. After that MX Red, MX Blue, Buckling Spring, and Topre 45g are the runner up favorite switches :P

Seems like safe bet with Browns if anyones looking for a first keyboard.
-
As far as common Cherry switches go, I agree with those ratings, it follows about what I would expect (not sure about Topre).
Personally though, there are some hybrids that are far better.

The data looks really flawed...
How can Topre 45's be 8.36 on Gaming 8.41 on typing and 7.05 overall? I'm not saying that overall number is even wrong because I think Topre's aren't good for gaming at all...but the numbers don't match up properly....
-
I think that the overall was a measure of what people thought the overall best switch was for all applications, not data tied to the best gaming switch and the data from the best balanced switch etc. I think they were a separate poll.
-
What about Greys or Dark Greys? They need to expand their poll.

Yeah if you try to rate it you'll notice it's 3 separate categories. Basically the last category is for people's impression on overall usage. Though I can see why a high gaming score and a high typing score should net you a high balance score, it only makes sense that way.

It was common switch types.

I wouldn't consider Whites and Greens and Topre 30g common types...
