Title: Wot's yer poison?
Post by: Internetlad on Mon, 04 February 2013, 17:13:08
I felt that the "Scotch" thread wasn't really broad enough, so I'm extending that thread into a full thread where we talk about our favorite alcoholic beverages, whether it be spirits, liqueurs, mixed drinks or straight up, beer or everclear. Post some of your favorites, what brand, if you prefer one, or a drink recipe that you especially love.

I have to say that I think amaretto (especially disaronno) is underappreciated. One of my favorite drinks (works well as a drink or a shot) is one that was coined to me as "the Gladiator)

As a drink simply mix two parts sprite/7up and OJ with one part Southern Comfort and Disaronno, and slightly stir. Same thing for the shot but use a double shotglass or simply drop a shotglass into a cup. Fantastic and goes down so smooth.

I like beers (all sorts, from Bud Light to Becks to Rickard's Red, I'll try any brew.) but i'm not a fan of guiness.  My six o'clock standby has to be Rolling Rock for it's drinkability. I like Gin and Tonic as well, Bombay Sapphire being what I normally pick up.

I'm down for all the normal stuff, vodkas, rums, etc. I generally prefer mixed drinks, but will try most anything.

Beer.  All kinds from all over the place.  Not a huge fan of IPAs tho.  They just taste like bitter grass and seldom go as well with food as other beers.  That's just my opinion.

Procrastination is my main poison. It's a slow creeping, regrettable poison.

Nice-ish bourbon (Wild Turkey 101), decent spiced rum (Sailor Jerry 92), and cheap beer (PBR)

Straight bourbon, rum with coke, and beer with more beer

Worked in a bar for a good part of a year back in my teens.
I basically went to the local bottle shop weekly and spent about half my pay on random additions to my home collection (at the time it was mostly liqueurs, for mixing purposes) now its more predominantly single malt scotch and vodkas.

Nice that someone else appreciates Disaronno or just amaretto in general. I like it with orange juice and it takes like the smell of shampoo with apple juice.

I drink ciders almost daily now, Bulmers here. Not much on beer, not a huge fan

you sound like you know how to do it efficiently. let me tell you about a little drink we like to call the peruvian bear ****er. combine in a pint glass 1/3 PBR and 1/3 orange juice. pour one shot of spiced rum (preferably capmo but sailor oughtta do it -- do NOT try this with admiral or shellback, and it MUST be spiced). drop the shot into the pint glass and down the drink.

i know it sounds wild but it tastes like an orange julius and it will get you feeling splendid in no time.

when somebody noted "cheap beer" I remember the few times I had picked up steel reserve "High Gravity Lager" because it's dirt cheap and gets you plowed so fast. Taste isn't terrible either.
Should pick up a 6 pack for nostalgia's sake.

You should try what my wife calls a "lunchbox". 2 parts Lager, 1 part disaronno and  3 parts OJ or more or less to taste. The beer brings the sweetness down and adds a little fizz.||

I gotta remember that. I'd substitute PBR for any other lager, but i'll give it a try. sounds odd but good.

the lunchbox! that was the first drink a bartender made me when i turned 21.
if they have it in your parts, there's always king cobra. 6% malt, pretty gnar but for a malt liquor it is not very strong in taste. it WILL give you a terrible hangover.

I'll have to try that some time :D

I've heard of another combo, but haven't tried it yet but will soon:
Quote
A drink consisting of 1 shot of Wild Turkey 101 dropped into a half of a glass of Pabst Blue Ribbon. This is often drank by the biggest, hairest man in Wisconson.

I'm medium sized, not hairy, but I live in Wisconsin so close enough!

Sounds like a less-beered-down boilermaker. Why not just drink your shot and chase it with the beer :P

Literally my poison is vodka. If I even have a couple drinks worth of it I end up throwing up ~5 hours later, my body just doesn't like it at all.
While I like scotch its rare for me while I'm in college. I like gin too, even the cheap stuff tastes fine in a gin and tonic, one of my favorite drinks.
And of course beer beer beer!!

Rums for me. I like the aged and brown. El dorado and Cuban rums in general are my favorites.

I also like beer, but I have a hard time with most cheaps ones. I like Stella Artois and Guinnes the most and some local beers like the "Blanche de Chambly", a white beer.

I also like wine, but it cost a lot where I live so I don't drink much of it. Still my 2 favorites are whites wines, the first is the Kim Crawford (New Zealand), and the second is the Gentil Hugel (France).

That stuff is miserable. Not as bad as Kentucky Gentleman, though.

My typical drink is a Dark and Stormy, or bourbon on the rocks. I like Woodford Reserve a lot, and am also a fan of Russel's Reserve 6yr. Rye.

Real Ales, local ones, (British Micro Breweries), have a particular love for IPAs. American beer I have tried and loved are, Blue Moon and Sierra Nevada Pale Ale. Whiskey wise, single malt ONLY, Glenlivet, morangie or fiddich (18YO = BIG noms). Cannot stand cheap bourbon, even mixed  :'(

I totally drink girly fruity mixed drinks.

But when I feel my beardhairs grow, it's usually some kind of expensive rum.  I don't mind wine or mead at all, I've yet to find a beer I can enjoy more than half a bottle of and I've only been drunk once.

What are some good cocktails to try? I'm going to a friends bar, $20 all you can drink the whole weekend. High end stuff is like $1 more per drink/shot

Well unless you only like rum/straight bourbon/maybe vodka, I can't say much. If you are willing to try other things, one of my favourites is a Tom Collins. Whisky sours are never bad either.

Oh and if you like shots, ask for some fancy layered shots!

Total frat boy drink, but here's a cheap and quick way to get messed up at a house party that my brother in law and his buddy "came up with" (AKA He could be lying, I don't know).

Get a 4 pack of rockstar (or substitute your own favorite energy drink oz for oz)
A bottle of UV Blue (blueberry vodka).

Pour half the UV Blue and 2 rockstars in a pitcher.

Due to the green colour it makes, it's coined an "Antifreeze" Easy to make, and relatively cheap if you don't mind drinking the same thing all night. Same properties as a jagerbomb (booze & caffiene) Easy to make and relatively cheap.

Potent stuff and it drinks like soda.

I mainly only drink beer. The prices of anything else at pubs/clubs here is stupidly expensive. It costs around $5 - $8 for a beer here and for spirits in a bottle mixed with Cola or whatever you're looking at about $11.

But I rarely drink these days anyway, I tend to get week long hangovers when I do.. It's as though I am allergic to alcohol. No real loss.

I went through a stage last year where I would buy flavored booze and I would mix it with all different kinds of soda (I think the technical term for this is highballs?) My favorite combinations were: UV Red and Dr Pepper, Bacardi Burnt Cherry and Dr Pepper, Whiskey and Ginger Ale, Gin and Juice.

Lately I've gotten more into beers - there is no problem a 6 pack of Yuengling can't solve!

It might be $30, but that's still a steal. I hate bars/their prices. So I'll re-ask what are some good cocktails to try?

Depends on your palate, and the barman's mixology style. Some go heavy on the booze, others light. Some drown a martini in vermouth, and others (properly, imo) will put some in, coat the glass and discard the excess.

for sweet drinks that tend to mask the alcohol, most anything mixes well with vodka. Screwdrivers (vodka & OJ) Cran & Vodka is an old favorite of mine, especially if the cran isn't too sweet. I find the tartness of the cranberry masks the alcohol very well. Spiced rum & coke is always good, and Seagram's 7 and 7UP are generally our bar standby if we run out of ideas.

Personally for a more "sophisticated" drink, I love Gin & Tonic. I prefer a very aromatic gin like Bombay Sapphire, but you might prefer a less obvious gin.

and for god's sake if you get a martini, do it properly, gin,  not vodka, with just a small amount of dry vermouth, and of course slightly stirred. I hate all these people thinking they'll be cool and original if they order a drink like they're Bond.

Some "heavier" drinks I like (as they both include cream/milk) are Paralyzers and just like the dude, White Russians.

If you want something palatable that will get you screwed up quick, a Hurricaine or Long Island Iced Tea will get you there. I'm not even going to try on the recipes for these because i've only had them if a pro is mixing.

Something i've been meaning to taste-test for a while is OJ, Cran, vodka and Beer. It's great without the beer, but I think the extra fizz would be nice and take the sweetness off the OJ/Cran that all too often are loaded with added sugar.

If you're feeling a little more vegan, A bloody mary or ceasar might be up your alley. The acid and salt really pops the taste buds.

midori pearl divers are what got me over never drinking alcohol (midori/malibu/pineapple juice)
hurricanes (drink, not act of nature) are pretty awesome, too.
lemonade + vodka or bourbon are both nice

One thing to add, if you get a white russian at a bar, make sure they do it right. It's supposed to be somewhat layered so that the top is easy to drink and the last few drinks are very potent (almost pure vodka/khalua with no milk) whereas most bartenders (at least around where I live) will just mix the whole thing together with a bunch of ice and call it good.

As far as shots, I already specified that gladiators are great,  and really any pure spirit makes a good shot, depending on your mood, but if you get a B52 and the barkeep layers it properly, it's outta this world..

Looked up the recipe and found this tidbit "Well, Midori is a melon liquer made in Japan (midori means green - and by "made in" I mean a Japanese company makes it in Mexico)."

Usually I drink beer. No PBR for me, though. Life's too short to drink cheap beer. Shiner Bock is my go to. I do love a Guinness, too.

For straight spirits, I prefer whiskey, rum, and vodka. Single malt scotch, blended scotch, Wild Turkey 101, Jack Daniel's. Appleton is my favorite rum. I brought some back with me from Jamaica. And I like my vodka Russian. I can tolerate Grey Goose, but I prefer Russian Standard.

As for mixed drinks, I lean toward whiskey sour, amaretto sour, gin and tonic, dry vodka martini, margarita (rocks). I've had some local frozen specialties in the islands (Hawaii, Jamaica) that I really enjoyed.

You should try a Flaming Dr Pepper sometime. Or an Irish Car Bomb. Everyone should try a Cement Mixer once, just for the experience. :)

A cool shot i've been meaning to try is a "brain hemorrhage"

a couple drops of grenadine, Peach schnapps with some irish cream (baileys) poured in. The irish cream will clump and hang suspended in the schnapps and form what's supposed to look like a rotten brain lol

worst (intentionally) shot i've ever had by far is the Prarie Fire shot. I can't exactly what was in the version I had, but I know there was tabasco and I think cheap silver tequila. Absolute ass.

Is it real absinthe (with wormwood) or a taste-alike? The real McCoy is illegal in the states since, well, it kind of has wormwood in it, and that kind of makes you go a little crazy.

But artists love it.

Worst for me was a Jersey Turnpike... all the liquid from the bottom of the drink pouring pad/mat from the course of the night (or longer).

Trying this sometime this weekend...

Same here almost. I gave them up because a local university track and field student had a heart attack after having one. Granted he more then likely had a heart condition in the first place, he was only 20 years old. I'm about to be pushing 30 so... That's all the push I needed to stop drinking them.

Back to topic! The cherry whiskey and coke sound awesome.
Been having this lately.
