Title: How the heck did i end up with a keyboard collection?
Post by: Glod on Tue, 19 February 2013, 21:05:52
This is a topic on growing keyboard collections

Here is my 2017 Update:

So I have been on Geekhack now for over 5 years, not really active on the forum lately, but 5 years ago i kicked off this hobby with a HHKBPro2 and a RACE and then everything snowballed due to being on geekhack.

I figured I'd give an update on my collection

Current "plug-and-play" collection (ready to plug in and use). another dozen loaned out or not build or broken

SO why not update this? - OP Updated EXACTLY TWO YEARS LATER
I have collected around all my non-destroyed keyboards and keyboard parts
I haven’t cleaned them up yet and some need repairs but at least the picture visualizes things for now
Once I have a few more built and cleaned up I will do like others have done and showcase each keyboard.

(https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7434/16596055275_04f66e0273_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/rhx834)

I wont go over my keycap collection but its overfiling a tub at this point.

The Glod Collection

Working
1.   CMStorm QFR Rapid with Frosty Flake Controller, 62g(Korean) Krytox-mix Lubed Ergo MX Clear, Stock QFR case
2.   KBT Race, backlit mod and key caps with lubed MX Red (like butter)
3.   KBC Poker X, IMSTO Red Plate, MKC Grey Case, Krytox-mix lubed (like butter) MX Linear Grey with 68g(Korean) springs, has some key registering issues, likely damaged PCB from too much modding.
4.   Acrylic ErgoDox, Black metal top plate, Krytox-mix lubed MX Red (like butter)
5.   Razer 2012 Black widow Tournament with MX Red Switches (custom installed) and ****ty paint job on case
6.   Keypad - GHPad (red scarf) with MX Black, 68g(Korean) springs, No Lube
7.   Orbi Touch booby keyboard
8.   1991 IBM blue label Model M
9.   1995 Lexmark blue label Model M
10.   1989 IBM grey label Model M SSK
11.   Unicomp Model PC 122 5250
12.   PFU HHKBPro2 – Has some controller issues I think but works
13.   Keypad - Cherry G80-3700 stock MX Black
14.   GH36x2 Prototype, No Case, MX Clear with 62g (Korean) springs and Silicone spray lubed (removes grit but is not like butter)
15.   Cherry G80-11900-USB – Stock MX Black as it should be

Needs Repair
16.   Full metal ErgoDox, unfinished spring swap MX Clear, Left hand 62g (Korean) springs and Silicone spray lubed (not like butter), Right hand stock MX Clear un-modded, needs right hand to match left hand, The keyboard I still use though even which the uneven switches
17.   Keypad - Red GONpad – currently has broken KittyPad PCB, needs replacement GONPad PCB swapped in which isn’t finished soldering SMB parts
18.   Red GON Nerd60 HHKB, has stock MX Clear switches with sip sockets, needs switches completely removed as I messed up the switches putting the sip sockets in (its hard to explain other than the sliders get stuck on almost every switch), this is not an easy task because the switches mount so tight inside GON’s cases, needs complete de-soldering of switches and LEDs. Missing a few switch LED resistors. Was going to replace with MX Blue with Heavy (70g+) Korean springs, no sip sockets just white LEDs.
19.   Phantom ANSI125, stock MX Brown switches, a few switches need to be re-soldered as they don’t register, was going to Krytox thick lube with 55g Korean springs. Stock QFR Case

Needs Assembly
20.   Acrylic ErgoDox with Blue Metal Top Plate – Everything soldered except switches, No switch decision made, will likely sell with a huge loss instead of keeping.
21.   Phantom ANSI150 – MK.com white PCB Already have a Red Vortex case ready for it, this was to get MX Black switches stock but may end up getting Gateron Blue switches with 45g Korean springs if I don’t end up building the keyboard any time soon.
22.   Phantom PCB No Plate – Original Group Buy Black PCB, Not sure if I will ever build this, it’s kind of a memento, I wont sell it.
23.   ErgoDox PCB No Case, No Switches, No Diodes, All other parts soldered. Like the black Phantom, I don’t think im going to ever build this and I’m not going to sell them
24.   GHPad (Red Scarf 1) PCB – No plans yet, so cheap no reason to sell

Ordered and Needs Assembly once it arrives
25.   GH60 #1 – Already planned to replace Poker X PCB with GH60 PCB, will inherit all of Poker X parts with a more desirable layout. Will Keep
26.   GH60 #2 – Tex Acrylic Case Ready, No Switch or plate choice made yet, will likely sell on classifies assembled for profit
27.   GH60 #3 – Vortex Silver Aluminum case, will use Stock MX Black switches and NO PLATE
28.   GH60 #4 – will give to a friend
29.   Red Scarf III (lightsaber-clone) – Already planned, No switch choice made but likely some gateron blue mod, my hope is to make this my primary-secondary keyboard so I will build this very high quality and with great care choosing switch.

RIP - Keyboards lost in action, either on purpose for science or accident
1.   Kinesis Freestyle - I have no clue where this is anymore but I found a bunch of its key caps in a box
2.   Adesso MKB-125B – Harvested
3.   Rosewill RK9000, killed during de-soldering, did a really bad paint job on the case and plate, totally embarrassing
4.   Ergodox Assembled PCB, completely stopped working, teensy and expander are like impossible to get off, saving pcb for a rainy day recovery project
5.   Cherry G80-11900-USB – I stepped on the PCB :O I mean its one sided I could do some miracle put together hardwire but **** that ****.

Coming Soon?
1.   Something ALPS
2.   Model F – AT maybe?
3.   Bluetooth 60%
4.   New Ergo Board, the one keyboard to rule them all and get me to sell my entire collection

Original Post that started it all
More
So i bought a HHKBPro2 last August to replace my 2+ year old rubber dome freestyle. Now thanks to geekhack i have like 8 keyboards and i still have 2 ergodox and 2 phantoms incoming and I want to grab 2 GH60s (i guess math says ill end up with 14 keyboards )

i don't even show these off to anyone except traveling to offices with the poker, the rest spend all their time in my home office away from friends and family. Not sure if i should be concerned and tell a doctor (lol)

It happens... I only have 16 right now, and 2 more on the way. But I have a much worse and more specific addiction of collection vintage Cherry G80 models. :D

I hear you. I'm on number three (one for each week I've been here) and still looking at getting two GH60s.
First world problems?

the amount of keyboards you have coming makes no sense. why would you need multiples of the same board

Why not pick a layout and stick with it? And more importantly, why not sell the QWERTY ergodox to people who didn't have the chance to get even one...like ME!!

the amount of keyboards you have coming makes no sense. why would you need multiples of the same board

1. different layouts
2. different switches
3. in case i mess up building one of them, the don't exactly go on sale all the time, i'd blow a gasket if i screw up the only chance i get.
4. I may sell something
5. i may end up finally with a job that requires me work in a single place, be nice to leave one at the office and not to have to carry my keyboard to work each day

if i messed up building something that expensive that would just be the end for me.

I can relate. I started out with a Razer Blackwidow (bad call I know), then found geekhack and deskthority and now I have keyboards everywhere, in various states of disassembly.... (I think I have 12 right now + 2 Ergo Dox and a Phantom on the way and will probably also buy 2 GH60 to replace my 2 Pokers)

I feel it starting.

Why can't I stop looking at keycaps or old cherry boards. Pures are tempting me too. Also cherry greens. Hey is that a vintage apple board with alps? What's topre like?

It's like that in my head.

Almost ditto on my end.  My GF stole my RACE LE and has claimed it as her own.  I even gave her some Zelda hearts from techkeys for V-Day and she loved them! :P

it tends to really sneak up on you. my final count will be 9, unless something better than the ergodox pops up. I'm hoping that the ergodox would be the answer to all my keyboard needs (split, non-staggered, programmable and ergonomic).

I'm beginning to feel the start of RSI symptoms, so I'm guessing if the ergodox doesn't work out, I might have to go get a kinesis advantage.

somehow when I hang out in geekhack marketplace, I feel like I'm buying keyboard/keycap futures. pay first and half a year or more later, the payout comes. anyone else get the same feeling? :D

This is my main issue. I want more boards, but I already have 1 of every 'common' switch type (except Topre.)

NIB NMB's with Space Invader switches is not something you see often. When I saw them - I told myself I'm getting two...
Good RD NMB's at 5$ makes excellent gifts to friends calling about keyboards with drinking problems. I bought 10 - Only one NIB left.
I have absolutely no reasons to explain why I have 5 Unicomps (3 different models)

I mean I am not exactly careful with my stuff, I type like a jackhammer, just another justification for 12 or more boards maybe, not sure if that holds up with mx and topre switches.

whatever...

I should mention that I don't have a collection of anything else in my house but these keyboards, I haven't had a collection of anything since I was a kid, I usually give away or sell to friends stuff I don't use anymore, I'm sure one of these boards will go eventually.

I also bought several boards. But it was always because there was something I wanted. Now however, I am kind of done since I tried every common switch, have a keyboard customized to my specifications with the keycaps I want, stabilizers I want, switches I want, look I want etc.

Honestly, a girl that shallow, you are much better off without her, fo'reals man. It's just a hobby, some people collect things, anybody who thinks that is weird, in a bad way, and weird enough to not take interest in another person romantically, unless the hobby consumed them like alcoholism, is never going to be a happy or enjoyable person to be around. I can guarentee there are really nice, amazing, and attractive girls who would dig the fact you are into keyboards, fact.

Well, once you get your first board you realize that you need to try every switch.  Then you rationalize all the different layouts and how having one of each is necessary.  Then, you get into the subtleties like the keycaps, because you've really got to personalize and make everything perfect, right?  This should bring you up to at least a dozen before you realize it :-)

It is funny to read stories like this. I hope I don't end up like you. :p
I started a little more than a week ago with QFR mx blues, now I got a Ducky 1087xm with green alps (using it at work atm), a white hpe87 with browns in the mail arriving soon, yesterday bought a decent-ish looking model M... might get a couple cheap ones for donor status for thast one. No hurry now, will have my work cut out with that one, especially if I'll need a bolt mod on it.

I am slowing down now. I do want a SSK actually but it's not realistic, one on ebay for like 250, with shipping and tax it'd be like 400, however nice it is I won't pay 1/4 of my monthly wage for a keyboard. I been only using tenkeyless for a week+ and I am already scared at the thought of a full sized model M, they're huge... ah well.

Wow forgot about this

Since my last post in this thread it's obvious  I have come to terms with my new keyboard hobby and even my wife is starting to embrace it after she saw me built my ergo dox and do all those special mods to it

3 of those keyboards pictured have been gutted for parts, one has been sold, 2 have been added:
-1 QFR rapid gutted for parts and pcb sold
-1 QFR rapid put in vortex case and sold to friend
-1 rosewill 9000 gutted for parts, possible damage to pcb from de soldering means dead for good
-1 Razer tournament stealth gutted for switches, will eventually give away the pcb and case left over
+1 ergodox with lubed reds
+1  ergodox soon to be built with lubed ergo clear

Confirmed to be added to collection:
+/-1 phantom blues (sold to friend upon assembly)
+ 1 phantom lubed reds with numpad mod
+ 3 gh60 various configurations and cases
+/- 1 GH60 (sold to friend upon assembly)
+1 ergo dox blues possibly in my own designed case
+1 mystery IBM buckling spring keyboard from a family member basement find, sound like at f, negotiating acquisition of this keyboard. Hopefully will have pictures soon

Could be added to collection this year:
- Leopold 660 topre
- Type matrix
- New kenesis offering
- buckling spring
- 55g topre
- something old I can restore

not to mention tons of key caps

Nice :)

I guess there are two type of people on this board. Some for who it is a real full on hobby like you, and others who just need 1-3 keyboards, but only buy for practical use, maybe spiff things up with a keycap here and there. I would be in the latter group, though every time I stroll through classifieds, there is a real risk of becoming the former lol. I am still scared of what I would do when someone offers to sell a Dolch set...

wow... that escalated rather quickly, Glod.

pretty cool how your wife is embracing your keyboard hobby, lol.

I find my interest in acquiring more boards waning after I got the ergodox, at the final count of 9 keyboards. Most of which I'm starting to distribute among relatives and friends. Can't imagine being interested in anything after the ergodox, unless the new kinesis offering strikes a chord with me. That or maybe when Dox finishes his datahand recreation (sure hope that one happens and is available to purchase and build like the ergodox was)... :D

Excellent collection. I'm limiting myself to one at a time unless I find something exceptionally rare. However having multiple different boards with different switches is something that is a little bit appealing. I better stop now before I get any irrational ideas on how to spend.

the amount of keyboards you have coming makes no sense. why would you need multiples of the same board
This is my main issue. I want more boards, but I already have 1 of every 'common' switch type (except Topre.)

If you're attempting to keep your keyboard fetish in check, DO NOT try a Topre board. Two things will result...

1. You'll be extremely unhappy with your Cherry boards, feeling sick about the $$ you've spent on them.

2. You'll want to buy more Topre boards...And they're expensive.

I've bought three in five months. 1k on keyboards in five months. But...I couldn't be happier. Spend a few weeks on Topre switches, and going back to Cherry is like typing on gravel.

If you buy a Topre board, don't say I didn't warn you.....

I had the opportunity to try a Topre board (HHKB) and I don't agree. Topre is not for everyone. The feel is sort of mundane -- not much of an improvement over standard rubber dome.

I would have to agree about the HHKB. I do enjoy mine, but it's somewhat underwhelming considering the price. But the RF is completely different, probably because it's plate mounted? Whatever the reason, I much prefer RF.

i mean i like the HKKB and i love its layout; the 45g topre do have similarities to rubber domes but at the same time it is a much more tactile and consistent feel/weight than any average rubber dome, and with the topre you get the thock :) Though I've done so much modding to my poker that it is worth more than my HHKB, the HHKB is still ranked second to my ergodox if i rank my keyboards on a overall score. Topre is not my favorite switch, blues are my favorite switch, but the HHKB is the total package.

it is ironic that i say blues are my favorite switch when i freaking sold the only blue switch keyboard i owned. good game glod!

Sorry that I keep dredging up this plum from a couple of years ago, but it just has to be repeated in a thread like this:

Quote from: Anonymous Coward
I feel ashamed when I see a grown up man say things like "...a sharp drop at the actuation point at around 2/3 - 3/4 way down the..."

Don't you have anything better to do with your life than yammering away on the minute details of a keyboard? I have both an M and an F that I picked up at goodwill for nothing 15 years ago and for the first time yesterday I googled about them and found 'enthusiast' (here an euphemism for retarded) websites where idiots bounce off the walls telling each other about the orgasms per second they have when using them. And 'using' is an overstatement with 90% of those morons. Most are busy opening them, cleaning the last atom of dirt off them, 'restoring' what doesn't need any restoration, 'upgrading', thinking of names for them, 'modding', taking photos, showing them off, in general jerking off about the clicky sensations and the superb accuracy of their typing and other general uber-dorkiness. What I never found there was anything useful to do with them, ie. actually program a computer.

Go type 'messenger lectures' in youtube and see what smart people look like, then kill yourself disassembling your One True Keyboard(TM) for the nth time and swallowing all the buckling springs.

And then mail one of your remaining model Fs to me.

My wife probably has approximately as many hairbrushes as I have keyboards.

There are 15 in this drawer, and these are not the ones that she uses regularly.

There are 4 out on the counter in regular use, there. Others live elsewhere.

You say "Hairbrushes are not nearly as expensive as keyboards." So, well, let's not even start on shoes .....

Back on topic. Despite being on Geekhack I still have only 3 keyboards, as this is the most I use. However, I have sold and replaced one, and I have put in quite a lot of thought and effort into the one that I have at home. It started with just trying some different keycaps that I saw someone post over at overclock.net (was not on geekhack at the time). Now I am participating in Click Clack sales, lubing switches, o-ring dampeners and custom cables. Geekhack kind of does that to you I guess. While I am very hesitant to change anything about the two keyboards I have at work, I am going all out on the Filco at home. I think it is almost completely done. Kind of sad that I will no longer have an ongoing project, items to hunt for etc. I even thought about spray-painting the case, just so it would give me something to do again. But the plain black works best with the overall color scheme.

Now is the time to get something "vintage" and start a project/collection. Have a (non) matching pair with one stock and one wildly modded.

Old IBMs are very satisfying because you can take them completely apart without a soldering iron.

Hmm, I guess the problem is that I would not actually use them. That does not seem to stop other people, but it does make me less motivated, since most of the joy in a keyboard (for me) is actually using them. Maybe I can make another keyboard for my girlfriend, but the honestly could care less so that seems like a waste. She does not touch type or care about how her keyboard feels.

I could always make the ones that I have at work nicer, without them being obviously fancy. So no bright colored caps. But maybe a dolch set or something. Hhmmm.

Sometimes I envy people who were not bitten by that bug. I am a "pack rat" type and my basement is bursting at the seams.

but i wanted to add the FC660C, some buckling spring, and some other stuff to make a real collection but my wife is freaking furious right now; i thought she was cool but i think she did some research into how much i have already spent and how much i have coming already and she's gone ballistic. probably because i still owe her money. i hope she doesn't break anything.....

It is true, I have never collected anything in my life. I am that other type, who buys only what he needs, but needs it to be the best. Best example is roadbikes for me. The money I spent on on my one road bike in the last year or so makes me feel uneasy just thinking about it (not even kidding). I could never explain to anyone , including myself, why I needed 100 dollar carbon bottle cages. I guess you could say it is not entirely unlike keyboards. Functionality plays a role sure, but it is mostly about the overall look and feel, and the satisfaction of putting together something amazing.

And about the wife (girlfriend for me), I could never let her know what I spend on things. She will allow me to do it (we have both a separate and shared account and stay out of each other's business) but she will be rolling her eyes. Sometimes, when she sees stuff coming in the mail, she does not even want to know. She often jokes "Awww, did you get me something?", knowing that there is no chance in hell that is the case (I am such a great boyfriend!)

The first couple of weeks I had my hhkb, I had buyer's remorse while happily typing away on a Filco TKL with DS sphericals.

Before this, I had tried the hhkb several years back by accident while browsing in a store in Akihabara.  At that time, I had no idea why a piece of plastic could cost so much, much less one that didn't feel any different from a cheap Dell keyboard.  Not knowing anything about hhkb, I attributed the price to some crazy Japanese otaku subculture that I didn't understand...

Then, miraculously, the Topre started to break in - the board began to thock - the hhkb became my main board and I lost interest in acquiring new boards.

For me, hhkb was the cure...  ...I now can appreciate why this board costs so much (besides the look-and-feel, it's actually not so easy to manufacture).  Knowing what I know now, I would probably pay twice as much for this board.   ;)

I, for one, am greatly interested in the state of glod's KB collection, and how it has changed in the last year.

Season 1 was pretty good, but I feel like it ended in a cliffhanger. Did Glod ever get his ergodox's finished? (the GH grapevine says he may have!) did the GH60 ever pan out? I think a "season 2" is well worth the wait and I await Glod's replies with great anticipation.

Hmm, I guess the problem is that I would not actually use them. That does not seem to stop other people, but it does make me less motivated, since most of the joy in a keyboard (for me) is actually using them.

Clearly, you are not a "collector" type personality!

Sometimes I envy people who were not bitten by that bug. I am a "pack rat" type and my basement is bursting at the seams.

Don't be intimidated by people here whose keyboard collections weigh more than they do. Only you need to be happy.

On the other hand, it is good to have a backup .......

I know this is a necro bump, but I couldn’t resist it.

Get her some panties. Missalaire will help you find the best bargain lingerie anywhere.

Of course, if you don’t know her size… I’m sorry, but you’re not going to stay her boyfriend for long.  :-X

I have so much pleasure in reading this thread.

Good news: I now have only 10 keyboards. Hopefully it's enough.

It happens... I only have 16 right now, and 2 more on the way. But I have a much worse and more specific addiction of collection vintage Cherry G80 models. :D

And I would never admit, to anyone, how many keyboards I have or have had. Nicely done! Who ever has enough keyboards? Really.

good job.

LOL. this made me smile so much

well spoiler, in season 2 Glod kills off characters, QFR Rapid and RK9000

I was going to make a separate thread sometime showing my collection and listing out all the mods and experiments i have done including my planned mods.....

My ASSEMBLED Collection Looks Like
1. IBM Model M - 1991, Soarer Converter
2. PFU HHKB  Pro2, O-ring Mod REMOVED
3. KBT RACE - Lubed Reds, LED Converted
4. Ergodox - Lubed Reds
5. Ergodox - 45g(Korean) Blues <- Daily Driver
6. Razer BWT, Standard Reds, **** Paint Job
7. G80-11900-USB in Black
8. "Ghetto" Phantom, Standard Blues, QFR Plate, Crap Vinyl/Paint Job on QFR Case
9. Razer BWU Stealth, Standard Browns, Unopened box, bought for wife but she doesn't have a desk yet
10. GON Kitty Pad, 62g Clears Lubed (LED does not work)
11. Orbitouch "key-less" Keyboard, in BLUE

My NOT ASSEMBLED Collection - On my workbench ready to be modded/completed
1. KBC Poker X, desoldered waiting for IMSTO plate
2. Phantom with ANSI125 Plate
3. Phantom, waiting for MOZ Case
4. QFR Rapid, A Friend Borrowed a QFR Rapid and spilled an entire cup of sweet tea on it, I desoldered it and now im planning what to do with the PCB (if it still works)
5. Ergodox, PCB already assembled and tested, Most likely will be sold in classifieds assembled
6. G80-11900-USB in Black, another one, no switches, planning mods
7. 1994 Model M, super dirty, needs new key caps, cleaning, and possibly bolt modding

RIP - Keyboards lost in action, either on purpose for science or accident
1. Kinesis Freestyle - I have no clue where this is anymore but i found a bunch of it's key caps in a box
2. Adesso MKB-125B - Harvested
3. Rosewill RK9000, killed during desoldering, did a really bad paint job on the case and plate, totally embaressing
4. Ergodox Assembled PCB, completely stopped working, teensy and expander are like impossible to get off, saving pcb for a rainy day recovery project

Sold
1. QFR Rapid, PCB

Pretty much, but i think i may mod again. my |\ key sometimes doesn't respond which makes me think the rubber cup isn't seated correctly after i reassembled it, so i have to open it up anyways...

I guess if you count the un-assembled and KIA boards, this is very true

NECRO a post all about Glod

SO why not update this?

Have I re-posted this again for 2015?

Necro Time

So I have been on Geekhack now for over 5 years, not really active on the forum lately, but 5 years ago i kicked off this hobby with a HHKBPro2 and a RACE and then everything snowballed due to being on geekhack.

Yeah I've got a NIB one, but I think my cherry logo is red. I think I've got a white one to.

Imagine my confusion seeing a post from 2013 with images that show GMK Yuri. "Oh yeah maybe OP just updated it".

I started about a year ago because I wanted to see what the hype was with the mechanical keyboards, so I go a Logitech G610 with Cherry MX browns after a bit of a research and I loved the tactility. A few weeks later I really start hatting my rubber dome keyboard at work, so I bought a cheap Chinese ten-keyless with Outemu MX Blue clones, which by the way I know now that they feel better than the Cherry MX blues!

I was happy with those, but I wanted to see what the fuss was with Cherry MX reds, so I ended up with another Logitecg G610 but with Chrerry MX reds, which I liked as well but preferred the browns and the blues for typing and the reds for gaming. Then, since I basically write a lot of code daily for work and for hobby I wondered what was the perfect keyboard for typing and after research and testing I ended up owning 2 grey badge IBM model M keyboards, both bolt modded. I use now both at office and at home the Model M.

Future plan is to build a black (clicky) APLS ten-keyless with vintage spherical keycaps, because I want to try clicky ALPS and I love the look of vintage spherical keycaps. I am also actively looking for a DELL AT101W, because it looks nice and it is a nive APLS platform.

My point is that it does not take a lot to get addicted to keyboards especially if your spend 8 to 16 hours a day typing on them. They become an extension of your fingers and a productivity tool. Since I got the IBM model M I have noticed that I am more productive, cause I actually enjoy typing on that thing!

I don't fault anybody for a hobbyist obscession, though I may find the concept of some difficult to grasp. I have about 10 keyboards and I use two of them 90 percent of the time- a Leopold and a Poker with minor mods.  I rotate the others to feel like they get use and have a slightly different typing feel.

I have 50 watches, well probably more since some are not working or are in various stages of repair.  Now while I have spent maybe 1500 or more on keyboards, but have probably spent 10 or 12K on watches in the last 7 years, and many many thousands on tools.  These are all vintage and I enjoy the tools possibly more than the watches.  This may be hard for many to understand as most people now just use their phone, or an iWatch which is a computer that just happens to tell the time.

I am itching to try a new switch and am worried that I'll like it better than what I have now, or use it once or twice and say "Meh" and put it in a pile with the rest of them.
