Title: Looking for keyboard suggestions
Post by: Niceboy2801 on Sat, 23 February 2013, 21:49:23
Hello, I am looking for a mechanical keyboard that is tenkeyless and quiet with no macro's since im gaming. HybridCore has sent me to these fourms from the teksyndacate fourms (Shoutout to him/her)

Thanks for the suggestions,

Ncieboy2801

Would a Quickfire Rapid with Red switches and o-ring dampeners from WASD be quiet enough for him? Don't honestly know how that would compare to Matias, but it would be a little cheaper.

edit: Not that the Matias board would be a bad choice.

Not true. (https://elitekeyboards.com/products.php?sub=topre_keyboards,rftenkeyless)

Anyway, I think you're probably looking for a CM Storm QuickFire Rapid.  Probably either black or brown switches.  How loud they are depend entirely on how hard you hit the keys.  The Filco Majestouch is more expensive and hardly any different than the QFR, but also a good choice.  Ducky is also an interesting choice, for example the Shine II is full LED.  There's also Leopold but they are minimal in the flair department.

I challenge anyone to disagree that he would be best served by a QFR.

Why Black or Brown but not Red?

It's really up to everyone to figure out what works for them, but I feel that reds are too light for gaming.  The reason is that in-game I am usually have my left hand resting on WASD or other keys and I find that I can accidentally activate the light switches.  Reds are still great, though.  As a matter of fact I don't like blacks at all.

ymmv in this, as in everything.  I find reds spectacular for gaming, being smooth and light enough that it's almost as if the keyboard responds to your thoughts rather than your keypresses.  On the other hand I find them quite terrible to type on.

You do have to have a pretty delicate touch, though, to avoid accidentally actuating a cherry red switch.

My advice to the OP is to go out and find some keys to try out or order the sampler from WASD.

I haven't tried blacks, but I find reds provide me with sufficient support. I don't really know why you would have to be careful to not accidentally press a key.

Yeah, the black, browns and reds get significantly quiter with o-rings as it dampens the "CLACK" when they bottom out but they dont work so great with blues cause the most part of the sound comes from the "CLICK" in that switch.

So o-rings with reds could be a option yeah, though its that "CLACK" sound that the keys make that makes reds so wonderful. In my personal opinion ofc ;)

Typically I don't like o-ring because I find they kill the mechanical feel.

However brown, red and black are not too loud I guess.  I have to admit black is the quietest since it has the stiffest spring so you don't bottom out hard.  But at the same time I don't like using black since it's too heavy.

In terms of quietness from loud to quiet:  blue > brown > red > black.

I find red really nice to type and game on, so I'd suggest you get a red.

Otherwise go Matias Quiet Pro like laffindude said.
