Title: Cherry G86-63400EUADAA - Rows and Columns
Post by: uzoc on Mon, 25 February 2013, 14:04:42
Looking at getting a non-staggered keyboard for ergonomics, faster typing, DVORAK, Coleman, etc. This Cherry G86-63400EUADAA - Rows and Columns model:

With relegendable and fully customizable keys, is really cool. Has anybody built one, tips, pics?

These don't get much interest around here, mostly because they are rubber domes, IIRC.

While G86 is not terrible for a domes, you might look around used market for Tipro, Access-IS matrix models which are MX based instead.

I'll look elsewhere then, thanks.

Could the domes be replaced with Cherry MX switches?

Not possible , you will have to create your own custom pcb and keycaps

I decided to buy one of the Cherry G86-63400's off of Ebay. I know they use rubber domes, but I wanted a big matrix layout to play with, and 18x8 is about as big as they come. Here's the link: http://www.ebay.com/itm/230896192563 (http://www.ebay.com/itm/230896192563)

It was only $70 including shipping (he's asking $68, and I offered $57 so it would be an even $70 all together, and he accepted it. I probably could have offered less, but hey, it's a more than fair price for one new in the box). I then went over to Newegg and bought a Cherry G99-1779ZUB SPOS Accessory Kit (it has extra 1 x 2 and 2 x 2, Lens and Keybodies and Paper) for $23, plus another $4 for shipping. Everything should arrive next week, and for less than a $100, I have something that will keep me entertained for months, assuming I don't break things.

I think I'll try Colemak, a modified Maltron, and maybe a couple of other exotic types (plus QWERTY in a format similar to my TypeMatrix 2020, just to try it out with something I know). I will plop the number pad in the middle, though, to give me the widest possible hand separation. And I might put 1-2-3 on the top of the number pad rather than the bottom, like a phone. You know, all of the things normal people do when they get a new keyboard. :))

I decided to buy one of the Cherry G86-63400's

Looks like they are available for around $100USD now. For example http://www.officedepot.com/a/products/480760/Cherry-SPOS-Rows-and-Columns-Keyboard/?cm_mmc=PLA-_-Google-_-Office_Machines-_-480760-VQ6-47886818756-VQ16-c-VQ17-pla-VQ18-online-VQ19-480760-VQ20-72929004596-VQ21--VQ22-176191796-VQ27-9134789756&gclid=CjwKEAjw0KK4BRDCiKHD5Ny8pHESJACLE620CPo2C6hJHUX5ff84xK1ZGDe4viHp4RDcE_Uuu1dHmRoCEdXw_wcB .

What were you expectations of the Cherry G86-63400EUADAA and were they satisfied?

The other best option right now looks like the Access-IS AKC120 http://www.access-is.com/pdf/AKC120_Programmable_Keyboard.pdf . The only one that I could find online was via http://www.ebay.com/itm/120-key-Programmable-Keyboard-hardware-mode-USB-/271187468861 for $235USD.

Both seem like good options; it would take a lot more effort to produce one myself.

$107 vs $235... some tradeoffs there.
