Recently I have taken an intrest in HAM radio.  I am currently studying for my Amateur Broadcasting Licence, and looking to get a simple HAM setup.  Anoine on GH into Amateur Radio?

I'm planning on visiting one or two Chicagoland HAM clubs in March/April to see what its about.  My primary interest is in alternative forms of communication should something suddenly happen to the infrastructure.

The coolest piece of HAM tech I've found is this: http://www.elecraft.com/KX1/KX1.htm

I see pictures online of HAM op's with rooms full of kit but that's not me - the smaller, lighter, and more energy efficient is better.

My dad and grandpa were both hams.  I've been meaning to get into it for a long time, both for the fun and for the emergency preparedness aspect.
