Ew, I have a commercial oil popper for a reason. :P I do like jiffy pop on the open fore though, one of my favorite camping foods.
-
Sure Ron! We moved to popcorn. Maybe kettle corn if we're lucky. I do love some good kettle corn. Air popped or oil popped for you?

Flavor salts? Never heard of those before, it's been a while since I've gone to a movie theater. No drinks, I'd hate to have to take a bathroom break.

There's much weirder stuff in other countries. Cheese flavored salts don't sound too bad.

Reconstructed topic starts now. Please continue discussion on popcorn and the like.
Myself, we always had an air popper at home, which was loud and always fun. Now, I buy popcorn kernels in bulk, pop them over the stove or microwave, and add salt. I like the simple recipes.
-
Imma do a mashup of this thread and "Things you hate"
Those "popcorn" buttons on microwaves, they totally should be renamed to "about-30-seconds-too-long-for-popcorn" buttons.
-
Bulk kernals oil popped on stovetop with salt added after. Usually with mix of Abuelita and Chocolate Cruz to drink.
-
Popcorn, no butter. Just salt, pepper, and maybe cayenne. Like all good snacks, goes good with coffee or orange juice :D
-
Haha the popcorn part of the thread is still going! I don't really eat popcorn :)
-
Microwave popcorn, with lots of real melted butter and just a bit of sugar
I wish I had popcorn now, ferk

I'm good at math :)

Orly? I could use help in maths. :P

If you don't have a legit popper, get some straight popping corn, throw a layer in a pot over some vegetable oil, and pop that **** on a gas stove. MMMMM delicious.
-
Popped in pot in a neutral oil. Just salt.
-
I can't stand popcorn, with the little flakes that get stuck in your gums... UGH.... why do you people torture yourselves with this devil's concoction.

Butter, brewer's yeast (large flake), and dash of garlic powder. Sometimes with Parmesan or other hard grated cheeses.
Delicious. ;D

Not that cool, just a cell phone :(
-
Check put AndieCalc, its a TI emulator for Android phones.
-
I like mine partially burnt. A little char is gooooood. :D
-
Wtf are you guys talking about?
OT: A few years back I tried popcorn with caramel at my friends house and it was DELICIOUS. Sadly, I never tried Caramel popcorn after that, neither do I know where to buy them...
-
Check put AndieCalc, its a TI emulator for Android phones.
I'm currently using Graph 89.
-
I use a TI-84 in class, so AndieCalc with a TI-83 or I use WabbitEmu with the TI-84. Wabbit Emu doesn't have the nicest UI in my opinion however.
-
see the problem with an emulator is that, it's an emulator on a phone, a smartphone with no physical buttons. she can pound out equations or whatever engineers do with that big ass ugly ti85 than she can if she was using an emulator on her phone. trust me i've tried, i'm like look! less weight!, and you don't have to carry around 4 aaa batteries!.
nope, i mean who am i to judge, or any of us mechanical snobs =P
so back to kettle corn? home possible?

Hi, my name is Justin. I'm a popcorn addict.
I actually go to the movie about once a week primarily to get popcorn. Hard to beat that nasty oil-butter that will probably kill me.
But at home, I eat popcorn almost every day. I used to be a Pop Secret Homestyle (http://www.amazon.com/Pop-Secret-Popcorn-Homestyle-Packages/dp/B000EMQFZI) microwave guy. This, IMO, is still the best microwaved popcorn.
However, because I sit all day for work and I'm married to a college professor in nutrition, I've made an effort to be a tad healthier. (Homestyle and most microwave stuff that tastes halfway good is pretty bad in the nutrition department.) I do have standards though! I now use this presto air-popper (http://www.amazon.com/Presto-04820-PopLite-Popper-White/dp/B00006IUWA) (just like when I was a kid!) which makes very nice popcorn if you have good kernels. Finding good kernels has proven tricky for me... Orval Redenbocker at the grocery store is usually crap. But some of the stuff on Amazon is hit or miss too. (Suggestions?) But worse case, they get a tad stale... nothing really really bad. (I store them in an airtight container, and honestly eat them so fast that they don't sit there long anyway.)
If you eat the popcorn right out of the popper, it's wonderfully healthy. I actually don't mind it, but honestly salt and butter make the world go round. I lightly dust the popcorn with this (http://www.amazon.com/Gold-Medal-Prod-Flavacol-Seasoning/dp/B004W8LT10/ref=sr_1_2?s=grocery&ie=UTF8&qid=1362628363&sr=1-2&keywords=popcorn+salts) or sometimes a tad of normal salt. If my wife isn't looking, I melt about 3/4"-1" of a stick of real unsalted butter and drizzle. Then I do my magical toss move in my big popcorn bowl to evenly coat. If my wife IS looking, then I might lightly spray the popcorn with olive oil using my trusty oil sprayer (http://www.amazon.com/Misto-Gourmet-Sprayer-Brushed-Aluminum/dp/B00004SPZV). It's good to add the oil or butter first, as to have something for the salt to stick to. Else, it all falls to the bottom and it's toooo healthy.
Don't judge me.

Jebus Rice on a bicycle. What's the matter with you people!! Giving me these bad ideas! Lol.
The best popcorn is the cheeeeeezy kind. Lots and lots of cheeeeeeeeeeeezy yellow powder. OMG
Cheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeze

There are so many flavor salts on the market now. I really like spicy stuff, so I have had a jalapeno cheddar flavor before. Another spicy flavor I have tried is the same as the Cheetos Flamin Hot... Yes, it's hot, but tastes like... well, nothing. After sampling a lot of the 'flavors', it's easier to use them than to experiment in the spice cabinet.

Danke bro!
I love popcorn, all ways. Mostly with just tons of salt and butter.

I used to make popcorn with chicken soup powder as a seasoning and I would then layer it with shredded cheddar cheese and give it a quick nuke in the microwave. just enough to soften the cheese but not make the popcorn soggy. Yes, its a little bit of work and a little unorthodox but its quite the treat! Oh!, and butter too of course!
-
When I lived in Colorado there was this Mexican guy who came by the apartments everyday with Mexican popsicles and tamarind popcorn balls on dowels.

Chile Lime Tequila Popcorn. From this recipe: http://www.101cookbooks.com/archives/chile-lime-tequila-popcorn-recipe.html (http://www.101cookbooks.com/archives/chile-lime-tequila-popcorn-recipe.html)

Define "Quick nuke".
I once microwaved already popped popcorn and the outer skin of the popcorn (brown kernel stuff) started sparking...
Never again...

Well, its been ages, but if I remember correctly it was a series of quick nukes of about 10 seconds at a time. gotta give those starch puffs time to relax! they are starch right?

Its a pretty cool food, popcorn. I mean, its a small bit of moisture within an otherwise dry kernel that heats to the point where the outer shell gives way and POP!! the starch within forms this white....thing.
"starch granules do not explode, but expand into thin, jelly-like bubbles. Neighboring bubbles fuse together and solidify, forming a three-dimensional network much like a sink full of soapsuds. This is the white fluffy solid we eat".
What a great thing!

Popcorn science...
So what what determines the shape of the kernels? :p
Why are some just round, with tiny specs of brown dots, while others turn into a 3D "club"?
-
Who knows!! It's crazy!! Popcorn is just too crazy to think about!
-
Away from me.

Away from me.
Come closer to me, babe

As long as the popcorn stays away from me, I'll come as close as you want.
-
I like my popcorn airsealed. In the trash on its way to a chemical treatment plant....
I really don't like the stuff.
-
hot, salted, and buttered
on a *very* rare occasion I might add a light bit of soy sauce or Parmesan cheese.
Alton Brown did an episode of "Good Eats" on popcorn that is very amusing and informative.

Love me some jalapeno powder in my popcorn.
