Title: Post your tricked out CM QFRs
Post by: dimamantra on Tue, 05 March 2013, 23:49:53
I only have a stock one but I have caps in the mail. (will post pics when they arrive)

I mainly want to see what everyone has done to theirs to give me some ideas/ inspiration. My overall goal is to do a full swap of keys on my QFR and turn it into a very custom board with altered modifiers, custom WASD cluster and custom F row.

Post your pictures por favor!

I find the stock QFR just way to heavy, so I did a lightweight mod to remove all the excess components of my QFR, functionality was slightly impacted, but overall I'm happy with the mod.

^Doesn't it? Preventing muscle strains in your back or hernias by placing your shoes ergonomically in an easy to each place instead of bending over. Seems like the best place.

Don't legs have joints in the middle of them? I could be mistaken.

Is it a tricked out QFR if it has a Phantom PCB? I'll have at least one when ever the Phantoms arrive. I might still do another one with a WFD plate before that happens as practice/warm up.

isn't it then, just another keyboard in a QFR box?

This is nice looking.

I would imagine that model primer would be the best option for this kind of things as it pretty much soaks into the plastic.

I think if I stripped the keyboard and painted the frame black I would get the stealth keys with the lettering on the front facing side. I really like that look for a keyboard.

This is a really nice looking keyboard though. I love the clean blank key look on these.

How was the LED swap? After I get my QFR back I'm considering getting a vortex filco case and moving the leds over to the circles filco keeps em in, and maybe a color change while I'm at it.

Did you take any pics of the connections? Are they just standard LEDs that sit in the slot in the switch?

Also, does anyone know what size LEDs Filcos use?

I assume you did the sanding to remove the rubber coating mainly.

Haha, thanks.  It's actually cyan, but cyan seems to be one of those colors that's really hard to get right when you're photographing and even harder to edit properly when your monitor isn't quite calibrated correctly.

Why not?  I love my QFR.  When I was looking at swapping the LEDs I was pretty impressed with the build quality of it.

Right now I'm on my laptop (T500), but the QFR is my go to board when I'm on my desktop.  That may change when I need to start typing more and I finish my RK9000 Clear mod that I'm currently in the middle of.

So far I've desoldered all the Reds from the board, sanded away the red powder coating from the top of the plate and painted it white and sealed it (I should have powder coated it, but I didn't think of it until too late), tested all my Clears since they were used, and painted the top half of the shell white, clear coated it, and PlastiDipped it.  On the list to do is sorting out the Clears to use since some of them are ugly, probably swapping them to the Red housing since they're plate mount and the Clear housing is PCB mount with a diode, stickering the switches with white stickers for aesthetics, swapping in some 65g Korean springs (assuming I can ever find some), probably lubing the switches, and mounting and resoldering the switches.  A pair of PCB lands were mucked up at the time of manufacturing it seems, so I have to either repair them or bridge them when I resolder.  I'll probably do the latter since it's easier.  After that, it's saving up for one of these awesome blue, red, or pink keycap sets (http://item.taobao.com/item.htm?spm=a230r.1.0.155.RqreDI&id=16319691774).

can I ask more about the paint and technique you used? I am a noob to these kinds of things, but yes, I also want to get rid of the iritating CMStorm logo. I want to do so with minimum technical skill and equipment, so I hope you're not going to tell me you did something very difficult and expensive!

Does anybody have an unbranded QFR with CCnG?

Trying to decide if I should paint mine when my set comes in.

I know CCnG looks good on black, but idk about the grey..

Here is mine: (potato)

CMStorm QFR Blues with Klaxon Key Caps and Vortex Red Aluminium Case

Fit Like a Glove and Looks Fantastic, all that's left to do is do a mod where i wire leds into the holes on the case and wire into pcb, already figured out how im going to do it but im going to need to drill into plate and desolder the switches. i just want to use my time for other stuff.

once complete this bad ****er is going to my friend as I have way too many keyboards.

Vinyl is brilliant, plan to change it's color every few months cos it is so cheap. What color should i go for next, i was thinking yellow...

I haven't got anything fancy, I didn't think a picture was necessary as all I have done is changes the stock key-caps (Didn't like the font) for some Filco ones I brought from the keyboardco.com.
I am on the look out for some nice double shots or some PBT caps, but don't really have the money at the moment  :(
So I will just have to wait  :'( (Being a student sucks sometimes)

^ It's obviously a custom plate. There are plate-mounted cherry stabilizers on there, and the stock plate does not have an option to mount cherry stabilizers. Yes it will be a raw, brushed finish. It's stainless steel so it can't be anodized, and powder-coating adds too much to cost.

Get in line (http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=36907.msg909708#msg909708) ;p

Ah nice.  I've been wondering about painting plates.  My thought it to use engine enamel and bake it in the oven to cure.  Should be pretty durable.  I would do that with stock plates, but I'll probably leave universal plates by WFD as is, clean brushed metal.

Just dyed my QFR burgundy using VHT Vinyl Dye. There's some white residue/blotches around the case, but hopefully I can get rid of them with another coat next week.

So 1 day after spraying it, the texture feels good. Its not smooth, but a little rough. It could be a result of my poor painting/dying skills. But **** it, I don't want it to be smooth. The white residue came off after I rubbed them with a microfiber cloth and soapy water solution. So my case looks pretty sweet at this point. I'm quite happy with how it turned out. And I've yet to see anyone paint theirs burgundy :p

It's not hard once you get used to it. I'm a reasonably quick typist, with it after 6 months, so I get maybe 50 wpm. Considering I had to look at it when I typed when I first bought it, this is an improvement.

I do love the red back plate of this keyboards. I centered my design choice around the red back plate too! I posted this in another thread 2 weeks back but I'll post it here too :)

The entire keyboard is Red, White, and Black! From the case, keycaps, back plate, logo, and even down to the switches (MX Reds)!!!

You are correct. QFR's with Blues, Browns, and Blacks come with a Grey case and black back plate. Only the QFR with Reds came with the Black case and Red back plate.

Thanks.  The silver and white will be short lived.  I actually painted the board silver to go with the Miami GB set.   ;D.  Gotta have some bling to with with the pink and teal.  This white set will end up on my Pure as the white looks nice with the green leds.  Just trying to source a green 1.75 shift key and a white row 4 ~ (or blank).

It would be a boring guide.

I started with 80 grit sandpaper to get through the majority of the rubber coating (sanded by hand and with the paper wrapped around a ruler for the inner areas).  After most of the rubber was gone, switched to 220 to get rid of the deep gouges from the 80 grit.  Then to 400 grit.  Sanding was all done by hand and took about 2 hours.  Once the case was pretty smooth, I applied several light coats of filler primer and let that cure for 24 hrs.  I then wet sand the primer with 2000 grit.  Then several coats of the chrome paint.  There is no clear over the chrome as doing so will cause it to get a strange dullness (even just dusting several coats of clear).

those with leds you have to desolder/remove the leds first, then the switches.

Did you have to sand it at all before painting it?  Doesn't it have a rubber coating?

Yup. Took me a few hours to sand down the whole case.
If I were to do it again, I would have sand between coats too just to make it a little smoother

I tried without sanding and with, didn't notice any difference.
Title: Re: Post your tricked out CM QFRs

Yeah, I don't sand too much nowadays.  I just select proper grit sandpaper for the job and smooth out to a certain extent only, because clear coat sanding/polishing is what makes a surface smooth in the end.  Spray cans introduce orange peel effect on their own, such is their limitation :(   The paint and spray can themselves create different textures.  For example my Ducky was not as smooth as my Filco Camo to start with, but the metal flake silver + clear coat on my Ducky came out much smoother than copper metallic paint did on the Filco.  Before any sanding / polishing.

Mmm nice white!  Vinyl seems like an interesting option, as you can get some very interesting designs (I've been thinking about 3M wood patterns).  I still can't decide what to paint my second Filco in.  Vacillating between pearl white, darker steel metal flake, and orange metal flake.  Too many options, too few keyboards :(

the only thing I see wrong in that pic is the radio shack desolder iron tip getting worn out too damn fast!!!! u desolder 1 board and need new tip...... already ordered 5 tips which are dirt cheap 2 bucks including shipping, but also ordered this bad boy which is rebranded Weller DS40 http://www.ebay.com/itm/251198860402?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649#ht_2366wt_1399, I lucked out since was the last one and there were 29 sold including mein, lots of tips and I know those last way longer than Shack iron tips. somehow landed on on pack of 3 Weller DST tips for it for $8 shipped, just in case if radio shack iron starts having more problems than just wearing off tips fast.

I did pick up a replacement tip for mine, but on the same day, I got a used (great condition) Soldapult DS017 from eBay and hope to not have to use the Radioshack iron ever again!  Just need to buy some grease for the o-ring in it sometime tomorrow.  If you spend money on many replacement tips, perhaps it's time to invest in a Soldapult :)

The bottom side is green, the top (which you never see unless it's completely desoldered) is tan like that pic up there.

A tip last me about 2-3 boards. Maybe you guys put too much pressure and it prematurely cracks. Ideally, you want zero pressure. The tip just needs to make contact with the solder, more pressure doesn't mean it will melt any fast. In fact, it could damage traces once the solder melts.

Yes, I mean that label with serial. This plate is the stock plate. It's a ABNT layout (ISO with one more 1X1 and right shift 1x1.75). But let me know when you have a leftover. I'm waiting a ANSI QFR and Filco.  ;)

Posted this in "what did you add to your keyboard today" thread but totally forgot this thread :P Gonna repost :)

I added vintage black switches, 62g Korean group buy springs, Krytox mix lube, Victorinox lube for springs, Super lube for stabilizers, a Grey top case over the Black one I had before, and universal TKL stainless steel plate to my QFR reds! Took all day but faster than my Ergo Clear mod on my Filco :P

I heard from a CM representative that a batch of QFR's had bad soldering jobs on the left Alt's... Looks like I fell victim... The solder was barely connected to the PCB and was just hanging there to an almost unattached eyelit. I would've never known had I never opened the keyboard... When I desoldered it, the entire eyelit just fell off and I actually lost and ONLY FOUND IT AFTER I HAD FINISHED PUTTING THE KEYBOARD TOGETHER LIKE 8 HOURS LATER. THE IRONY. At first I thought, "well ****... looks like I won't have a working left Alt..." but then I had to Macguyver moment and used solder to create artificial wires to connect to the PCB by exposing the connection because of a lack of an eyelit... Thank God it worked. Felt boss for a few seconds ;)

FEELS LIKE BUTTER.

Yup, I'm a symmetry person too.  Why can't sets just be offered with both options?  It add what, two keys to it?

I'm a symmetry person, so asking keypop doesn't do me any good.  It's more a majority of GBs out there and the sets they do that bug me because there's no symmetrical option.

I agree with you, Nubbs, but we're in the minority =/  I've learned to accept the asymmetry, but I also wish more GBs would provide the option.

Yeah I'm a symmetry person, and if there are already mod sets and iso sets, i'm surprised they dont make a symmetry option or just have both sets as default.

That could look good.  The hard part would be finding someone to part with one for trade or a reasonable price.

Bit off topic, but I want a black top panel for my QFR but according to CM, they don't have any in Europe brand new (They only have refurbished apparently). Was told there was no way for me to get a brand new black top cover from CM. I tried posting in the CM Storm section and on the CM subreddit but I either get ignored, told to contact someone who doesn't reply or get told to paint my grey panel..

*sigh*

On the same lines, I'd love to swap my QFR w/ browns for one with reds but finding a new QFR MX Reds in ISO layout is quite hard (Most of the BNIB ones are like £80-£90 whereas I paid £70 for my MX Browns). Many UK sites say the QFR in reds has been discontinued and they've had no stock for months :(

Sorry for going off on a tangent. Getting a new sleeved cable soon for my QFR from Pexon :D

It doesn't take much--if you plan on traveling with the keyboard, you will see the rubber coating peel off at the corners.  It's very thin.

If you're going to be taking it with you a lot then it might rub off fairly quickly.  But that is usually around corners and edges.  If you plan on painting it all you do is sand it off.  Look for photoelectric's thread in the making stuff together section.

edit: damn looks like photo already got here lol

what if i protect it with some bag or towel would it peel to? the peeling is cause by friction is it? would it peel naturally after some time?.. =.=

Well if you will have a separate soft case for it, the coating will probably not peel for a good while, but still, you might end up bumping and brushing the case against stuff if you're going to move it a lot.  If you're worried about that, there are other tenkeless boards to consider, like Keycool, Ducky, WASD V2 (not sure if there's coating--don't think so), Leopold, PLU, Noppoo Mid, etc.

He had someone at an auto shop paint it, I believe, but if you want to recreate this yourself, click below.

you can use Rust-Oleum's Painter's Touch white paint and spray Rust-Oleum's Universal in Pearl Mist over it.  But be very careful, because Universal paint takes FOREVER to dry--don't touch it for at least 2 days, or you can leave fingerprints on the surface.

Quite a contrast to the Filco yellow keycaps which were on there before (and retired now to reduce the shine that was starting to develop).

Pretty simple but I like how the red back plating goes with the blanks.

I like the simplicity of it!

Quick question: is there a place I can find blank / colored QFR cases? Or are they all custom-painted?

Also, is there an online store which sells full replacement key sets or will I have to browse the forum to pick them up?

Thanks  ;D

Good to know, thanks! Appears as though the MX Browns only come in a black case

Is it just the stock photographs or do newer models actually come without the logo above the arrow keys now?

The older cases had the logo above the arrow keys.

Newer cases do not.

This is my first MX board. Like a lot of others, I found the font to be annoying. Luckily, I found an old Silitek Lite-On board for $2 that had MX-compatible caps. Kill+, Link+, & Loop+ keys are from a grab bag. Anyone know what they were used for?

It would be nice if I could find a cheap rubber-dome that would provide a complete keyset for the QFR. (Are there any?) I like my current set-up, but I'm sure I'll eventually spring for something else.

If you're asking what I think you're asking, most rubber dome keycap sets are not Cherry MX-compatible.

Admiral,

I'm thinking of doing duct tape also

But don't these get nasty after a while? The sticky stuff starts leaking out at the edges causing dirt to adhere. Do you do something to prevent the dirt, such as spraying on a layer of transparent acrylic paint or something?

They dont feel like the BEST quality to me, but theyre definitely really good for the $20 price tag I'd say. I'm enjoy them at least -- and they making me get better at touch typing  ;D

The portal keyboard makes a lot more sense now. I thought it was the Gulf Ford GT colors but didn't have gray!

I'd love to do a GULF themed top case and wrist test combo

top case was airbrushed by my uncle, keys are a green/black set from WASD and I made the wrist rest

You're asking the wrong person.

Granite!

With apologies to those who might have seen this picture elsewhere.  I did take more pictures, but a long hair found its way across the right side of the keyboard and ruined all of those shots.  Plus it was already dark outside, so the pictures weren't that great anyway.  More and better tomorrow, hopefully, if it is not raining too much.

Ik now, but this keyboard doesn't see a lot of use these days.  Mostly I switch between HHKB, Model M and Ducky Yellow, none of which are entirely suitable for Granite keyset.

Those key caps though! I am in love with this style recently! They just look good - Poker, QFR, whatever, they just look good.

QFR not cool any more?

Here's what mine looks like atm.

In reality the colours are a little darker.  Camera does not like the late afternoon sun.
