Title: Ever try tighting your cherry stabilizer like this?
Post by: Lunartuna on Sun, 10 March 2013, 11:22:37
I noticed one side of my space bar had some play(up and down) before feeling the tension when pressing. It was noisier than using the other side.

I took the space bar off and noticed the left + of the cherry stab rested ever so slightly lower than the one on the right side. I could also feel this when I put my fingers on top of each + at the same time.

Now this is a plate mount keyboard so I have no access to the wire at all except for the tiny little bit I can see leading up to the +'s  (What the hell are those + things called anyways?)

To fix this all I did was put my finger over top of the right side + lightly holding it down, while I pulled the left side all the way up and hold it for 2 seconds. Now the wire seems to have good memory so it took 3 or 4 times pulling it up for 2 seconds before I noticed the left side + resting at the same height as the right +. I Gently push the space bar back onto the switch all the way and then gently press the right side into position, followed by the left.

Now the space bar is more snug!  :)

Disclaimer: I take no responsibility for you messing up your stabs trying this, I have only tried it once and it worked for me!

EDIT: Whoops, I was talking about Costar stabilisers, not Cherry. Oh well, I'll leave the post here in case anyone finds it :D

My Das spacebar was very loose and causing a terrible rattle sound, and I found a different solution for tightening up the stabilisers. I cut out tiny squares of normal plastic stickytape, layered them about 6-8 layers thick and placed them inside the hole in the stabiliser pins (sticky side down). This reduced the size of the holes in the pin just enough to make the bar a snug fit in it. The key went from being loose and rattly to rock solid and pressing normally. I should probably have lubricated the bar at the same time, but it seems to be holding up pretty well.

It takes some trial and error to get the number of layers of tape right, and can vary between keys and between the left and right stabiliser. Too many layers and the key will stick or feel too hard to press, too few and it'll still rattle and feel loose.

This is why I prefer Cherry stabilizers. No issues with bar rattle, bending or crooked keys.
