Someone was probably upset it came branded or unbranded and complained about it not looking like the photos :)

No, Amazon only pulls an item in that fashion when they have multiple defective returns. No exceptions. That means that at least several units have had exchange requested due to defects such as DOA, failure within return period, damaged on arrival, or actual defect.
Complaints about the product photo would not result in a sales halt, plus the product photo is accurate for the QFR with Reds. All QFR Reds come with the black case.

Meaningless, because Amazon also fails at keeping products disabled unless there's an actual PR disaster in progress. It gets deactivated for several minutes to an hour, manager reviews without actually looking at the returns or contacting the manufacturer, then reactivates because "meh, 50% return on 10 units sold. Stopping sales costs more than exchanging defects, reactivated."
Should be clearer: this doesn't mean that there's something SPECIFIC wrong, either, only that something is NECESSARILY wrong. But without speaking to the people returning it, it's impossible to know what it is. And it's an automatic trigger. So it could be a set of identical problems or a number of different problems. Could be UPS/FedEx trashed packages, could be other things. (It's also important to note, I was told pretty clearly that return due to wrong item will not trigger it. So if people ordered red but wanted blue, that wouldn't do it.)

They were selling clicky reds and non clicky greens. People got upset and Amazon pulled the pug on both.
(sorry for the bad joke - couldn't resist)

Something IS happening.
My 4 mo qfr is alive and well, but the "returnometer" on the best computer parts webstore in my country shows 19% returns. And they usually reset that as they please.
Maybe some batches were really bad.

I know I am not impressed with the qfr I got

I had to exchange mine once at Fry's. Some of the keys didn't register. The one I grabbed was new, but they had some with the discount sticker on them - the one that they put on when customers return items and they restock them. They might have had some issues with quality control for some batches.

I think the "returns" issue is probably just the kiddies getting into the MX-Red hype, and then realizing, linear takes too much getting used to, and then just sending them back as "defective" to avoid return charges.

So, an update. Amazon has halted all sales of the QuickFire Rapid MX Red and is not unlocking them. (http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B007VDLVD4/ref=dp_olp_new_mbc?ie=UTF8&condition=new&qid=1363476476&sr=8-1) (All other models are backordered and showing 2-5 weeks or removed from sale at Amazon.)
This is definitely a product pull - the direct link (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007VDLVD4/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B007VDLVD4&linkCode=as2&tag=rootwyrm-20) has now kept the 'under review' message for several days. That doesn't happen for product image issues - only significant defect returns.
Reviews are clearly indicating that Cooler Master is still having severe quality problems in the chain, and it's purely luck of the draw if your keyboard isn't scrap - many people reporting needing 3+ returns to get a working keyboard, faulty individual keys, complete death within 3 months, and connector issues. (Stars are pointless - idiots giving 4 stars when the left alt key is totally non-functional out of the box.)

uh oh... CM rep better get in here soon...
Is geekhack going to recommend another keyboard...?? we goin' back to those ridiculous filco prices :D
We've got Leopold and Ducky, but no warranties on those, so as far as cherry mx goes.. it pretty much "has to be filco"
Good thing i got my quickfire BEFORE the fall from favor..
This drop in quality is "consistent" with WFD saying the Rosewill line got worse as well... seems Costar is more about volumn...

I can still say that my CM Storm Quickfire TK is an excellent board, and it is not costar. I wish they became available in browns again, but I love my red, and it has a very solid build. Has been reliable almost since they first came out when I bought it. If they ever make browns available again, I will certainly buy, as they are my favorite all around switch.
