Title: Tenkeyless Das?
Post by: Abacus1234 on Wed, 13 March 2013, 14:25:27
Hey everybody, this is my first post on here. I got the mechanical bug, and have since bought 4 in the last 6 months. I am honestly 50% typing and 50% gaming, and I travel to tournaments with my keyboards pretty often, so tenkeyless is something that I really like. I have a tenkeyless Leopold and a QFR both with browns, but I really wanted to try a Das. Unfortunately it isn't worth it for me unless they make a smaller one. Have they ever produced them? Has anyone heard of any plans for them to do so?

Thanks for any tips. I've really enjoyed reading the forum since I discovered it a couple of weeks ago.

Dos doesn't get much exposure here because it's a 'mainstream' keyboard. We're all a bit snobbish when it comes to keyboards, but that's another topic.

My first mechanical board was the Dos ultimate with browns. It's a great keyboard. Even though the keycaps are completely worn smooth, it's still a great board. I would recommend it to anybody. It's unfortunate they've not come out with a tenkeyless. Everybody else has. But TKL boards have become so popular, I would expect them to jump on that wagon before too long.

If I could offer any advice, look for PBT keycaps. They feel completely different than ABS. And of course, they don't wear nearly as fast as ABS. Leopold is coming out with TKL boards with stock PBT keys, but I don't know when Elite Keyboards will have them. They're available overseas now. It's the 700 series rather than their 200 series currently available in the States.

I don't think that's what it is at all...

Yeah I think that's later on, originally Das was a bit more popular due to its pricing (20% student discount) and Costar quality.  But later on people were turned off by its glossy finish (finger print magnet) and over exposure (kinda like Razer).  And ultimately the OEM change killed it for all the geekhackers.

So I'd say it's a bit of everything.  I still own my Costar Das which I still is a very good keyboard but lately I don't recommend Das to new users anymore.  Currently waiting for CM Storm XT to come out to be my new "recommended buy".

As for Das Tenkeyless, I photoshopped a picture way back for fun hoping they'd bite and make one.  But I guess it didn't work but you guys can still take a look  :P

The Quickfire Rapid is mainstream, yet it seems to be a staple keyboard here. The problem with Das keyboards is the glossy case -- unless you plan on using it as a display, it will be a finger magnet.

Yeah, that makes sense, I can see why people don't like to constantly look at a fingerprinty board. . I have mostly mainstream keyboards. I guess my leopold is probably my only "cool" keyboard. I just picked up a CM Storm Quickfire TK with red switches today, and I have to say that I'm pretty impressed. I like the tenkeyless form factor. It's a very nice design, and I have to say the back-lighting is actually pretty well done. This is my first mx red keyboard, and although I don't think I'll be switching from browns, I can see why some people love these. I think I've also discovered that I prefer the cherry stabilizers to the Costar ones, but I guess that isn't too usual. Seems like most prefer the Costar.

Am I hearing you right that the DAS keyboards are not what they used to be? Why is it exactly that you don't recommend them anymore?

On the off-topic of non-cool boards, I really think that the 2013 Blackwidow is underrated. I guess there may be some lemons out there, but on mine every key clicks nicely, and the build quality seems above average.

That actually looks really good.   I wouldn't mind having one of those on the desk :)

Also the Das bezel is huge, and most custom keycaps don't really look good on it.

I was hoping Das would come up with backlit keyboard, in my opinion it would look really good but too bad it most likely will not happen at this point  :(

When you say "at this point," are you saying that there is a reason it wont happen that has come up? Are they in trouble as a company or something?

lol I don't know maybe I feel like if they want to do it they should've done it already.  All the other companies are coming out with cool stuff, even Matias came out with tenkeyless.

Das' lineup is still roughly the same after all these years.  Unless they're realllllllllyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy cooking something otherwise I think they might just keep on milking it.

I loved my Dos Ultimate with browns. Well, with the exception of the ABS keycaps. But it was rock solid. I still pull it out from time to time. If it weren't for the worn, high-gloss keycaps, it would get more use.

But I think they're making the same mistake Blackberry (Rim) did. Blackberry had a solid market share (at least in the Enterprise sector) and snubbed their nose at the innovation happening within their competition. Look at them today.

I hope I'm wrong about Dos. It was my first mechanical keyboard. Kind of like your 'first time'...something you never forget.  :D

I hope Das won't make any backlit keyboard. Their marketing has been mostly about touch typing so far, which is the (only) thing that makes them different from Razer, at least from my point of view. However, I'm afraid the day will come rather sooner than later, the new generation of the Pro suggests they're probably changing their direction towards cheaper/gimmicky designs.

BRACE YOURSELF

For the last year, Das Keyboard has been working behind the scenes to bring you an exciting surprise in 2015.

We will be making an official announcement soon, but couldn’t keep it a secret from you any longer. Here is a little hint to help you out.

Hint:

It’s not small, it’s not big, it’s kind of in-between.

People who use that font on keycaps need to be shot.

Half life 3 confirmed.

But in all seriousness, I wouldn't mind a DAS. I think they look pretty cool, and I like that spinny thing.
