My friend wants to buy his first mech keyboard, and he has his heart set on the Otaku full-sized Leopold FC500R, with MX Brown switches:

I think it's a bad choice, but he seems pretty smitten. Should I try to talk him out of it?
Personally I would recommend a TKL Otaku Leo, I would say this one: http://elitekeyboards.com/products.php?sub=leopold,tenkeyless&pid=fc200rtabn
Actually, I don't like Otaku, and I would recommend a keyboard with letters, but it's his choice I guess.
What would you tell him to do?

Why do you think the TKL is so much better than the fullsize?
You ask us our opinions, but you don't state any use case or criteria.
-
Well, TKL is better for gaming, and this guy plays a lot of games.
Plus he is an art student, so he doesn't use the number pad for school either.
If he was an accountant, I maybe would recommend a number pad, but otherwise no.
But now he said he wants Blue switches, because, in his mind "clicky means mechanical".
So I'm switching my recommendation to this Rosewill:

Mainly because elitekeyboards is out of stock of full sized keyboards with blues, and IIRC Rosewill is a decent brand, and the price is okay too, especially for a student.
If there is a good CoolerMaster full-size with blues, can somebody let me know?

Sometimes, especially for your first mechanical keyboard, you just gotta get the one that you've got your eye on. If he really wants a full-sized Otaku FC500R, then he might as well get it.
I have a Leopold and it was all right for a first mech kb, but I wouldn't buy another. Especially the 500, which uses an even weirder spacebar than the other Leopolds. Even the "universal space bar" won't fit it, I think. If he ever wants to change his keycaps out, that will be a problem.

i have 2 leopolds 500 n 700....
well leopold is a good price keyboard compare to the others... but yes the negative part is the spacebar... different from others...
the otaku u have to get used to it for a while... i mean cmon once you are on a mechanical keyboard you dont really see letters anymore..
but my choice would be get a ninja / normal... and buy an otaku set and start replacing like slowly... a-z first.... 1-0... f1-f12...
i use full size keyboard for home... and the TKL for LAN tournaments.. it fits into my bag perfectly.
