Title: What to do if I just need two key caps?
Post by: stereophonic on Sun, 17 March 2013, 17:39:57
Hey all,

I was wondering what I could do if I wanted to buy just two new colored keycaps. I need them for my number row. One on 5 and one on 0. I play a lot of SC2 on a blank keyboard and this will help me with mis-clicking the control groups since I use all of the numbers. Sometimes I can't differentiate a 7 from an 8 or 9 from 0, etc.

I have das keycaps so naturally I went on wasdkeyboards.com and they have a nice customizable 10-key number row set for a decent price. The problem is that the shipping will cost as much as the price of the keycap set. Is there any other way to get keycaps for cheaper that are the same size as the das keycaps? Plus I only need two, remember.

Thanks.

I could sell you 2 cherry relegendables. PM me if you want them.

keycapsdirect looks like exactly what I'd be looking for. Except, I have no ide what all the abbreviations mean. I'm basically looking for the type of keys that will be as close as possible to the das keycaps in terms of feel, size and material.

http://keycapsdirect.com/key-caps.php - you would probably want SA family ABS caps for a das.  I'd hold off until someone else can confirm though.

DCS - cherry profile?
SA - "OEM" profile?

None of these families really look like the das... I may be wrong though. I'm actually using a rosewill keyboard with das caps. So maybe that makes them look different? If if you ask me, the DCS or KT look most like what the das uses. Also, I'm mostly paying attention to the number row, disregarding the rest of the rows.

I just saw that WASD also make orders for single keys, but unfortunately the shipping is still really expensive for just 2 caps.

No, none of signature plastic key will be a match for your Das stock keycap. You were on the right track with wasd. Where are you located that the shipping is so expensive? Maybe there is some other vendor you could be pointed to.

Since you are into starcraft, perhaps some of the MKC keys (http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_odkw=cherry+key+cap&_stpos=50314&_localstpos=50314&_fcid=1&gbr=1&_osacat=0&_from=R40&_clu=2&_trksid=p2045573.m570.l1313&_nkw=mkc+starcraft&_sacat=0) would be of interest?

I'm from Montreal. Shipping will cost ~6 dollars for 2 keys ($2) from WASD. They use the same factory as Das as far as I know so it's probably the best in terms of similarity.

The MKC caps look retarded... 4 dollars for a metal cap? That's ugly and absurd. Sort of reminds me of someone who's had his tooth removed and replaced with one made of some sort of metal.

The keycaps from signature plastics will be a little shorter, but it is noticeable. If you think that $6 shipping is a lot, try to find a local geekhacker and maybe you can walk and pay him/her a visit.

i don't think it would change much unless they bought a ton of caps. They'd have to pay the same shipping as I would. Could give it a shot though.

Is there any chance of a group buy from wasdkeyboards any time soon? Maybe that could end up being cheaper on the shipping front.
