Title: Shoddy assembly on a Realforce
Post by: khaangaaroo on Fri, 22 March 2013, 01:14:49
Get ready folks, this is a big one. Today I opened up a recently acquired 86u to move some domes around, and one of the domes had TWO capacitive springs underneath it!

I actually couldn't feel the difference between the key with two springs and another with just one. It registered key presses like normal. I'm not surprised that I found two springs under one dome though. When you have a bunch of those springs around, they stick together and sit within one another pretty easily.

Strange.. Have you fixed it? Or is it not as big of a problem that it has to be fixed?

I just left the extra spring out as I was putting the board back together. It's really not a big deal. I'm just creating conversation :)

Haha yeah, pretty funny. I never would have either if I didn't take it apart.

have you compared it to your 30g?

Yeah, I tried it out for a full day at work, and it was a lot more fatiguing than I expected. That might be because I'm more used to 30g and mx reds (my two switches of choice.) But I wouldn't call 45g too heavy, they just feel a bit stiff. Not being able to type without bottoming out is tiring. I have a feeling my fingers will probably adapt after a few days though. We'll see.

realforce 45g is fatiguing... people are really, really different. did your fingers ache? just curious. mine do when typing on a 45g.

I know most guys like the 45g and 55g Topre boards. I've had an 87U variable for about four months, and just got a HHKB Pro 2, which is 45g uniform. I do like the 45g HHKB. But in terms of typing comfort, I'll take the 30g - 45g Realforce any day over the HHKB.

The spring shouldn't make any noticeable difference to the feel of the key press....

Cray cray. I ended up trading out the 45g for the 55g because it felt like all the keys were too loose, that there was something wrong with them. But then, I'm 6'2" with 4" fingers.

mine is all good with the keys, but the case is loose. and i'm 185cm with 22.5cm hands if this is relevant.

You guys have big hands...haha

iri, you could try putting some tape or something around the inner edges of the case before clamping the two halves together. Maybe that will close any gaps and tighten it down.

The top part of my AE is slightly loose, but that doesn't really make a difference in use.

thanks. it's only a bit loose though. doesn't affect the overall typing experience. and there was a geekhack member (you?) who comfortably used their realforce board without the case.

also lolz @ the lonely spring )

haha yeah that was me without the case. I just thought I'd throw it out there in case the case of the loose case was really bothering you.

I don't know why, but the phrase "typing on a cloud of boobs" came up when I saw that picture of a lonely spring.

More like "cloud of torpedo tits", going by the shape of the spring.
