Title: PBT vs. ABS in Water?
Post by: Funktion on Mon, 25 March 2013, 19:30:02
Recently got a new Filco Majestouch and was under the impression that it did not come with PBT Key caps. I saw this video a little while ago and tested it on the stock caps it came with and looks like they very well may be. does anyone know whether is a legitimate test or not?

PBT sinks, ABS floats, and there are exceptions to every rule.

Yes, in my opinion this is a valid test.

That was Samwise.  He was my #1 Koi until he passed away one Winter's day.  That was his baby picture.  He grew to about 14" and I don;t know how many pounds.

It's a valid test I think.

But I am 99.9999% sure that there are no filcos with stock PBT caps.

Tested it again just to make sure i'm not going crazy; still sinks. though as vintage said I too was 99.9999% sure they were not. I think the question is satisfied but if anyone else wants to check their board out of curiosity the stock model is:

FKBN104M/EFB2
(Majestouch Ninja 2)

Way to make me sadface now every time I see your name and avatar, Ron! How long did he live? Do koi have personality?

I thought that PBT sinks MORE QUICKLY than ABS.

When I clean them I dump them in a bowl of hot soapy water, and I never have a problem with either type floating, except for a few stragglers that I dunk with my fingers.

A sure test is to swirl a drop of acetone on the underside of the key and see if it leaves a mark. It will not affect PBT.

Or, boil them for 5 minutes and see whether they deform.

He was a tough, bad-ass koi whom I raised from (literally) a small fry.  He bossed around his pond-mates and was our most personality-filled koi.

He only lived a few years, when a sudden overnight cold snap got all of the koi.  It was sad then, but now I just have fond memories, so no sad-face anymore.

Also, like PBT, koi turn out to be heavier than water.

I used saturated salt water to discriminate easily.

EDIT: and it is difficult to discriminate between koi and kingyo to normal people including myself :)

Well, kingyo don't like ANY salt, but koi quite certainly do.  Also, kingyo float!

p.s. Look at the fins and face.

All ABS keys do sink once all tiny air bubbles are gone. (they usually hide in the stem hole) They sink rather slowly though, while PBT behaves like your average rock. Well, almost.
