Title: remove LED's from Pure switches
Post by: jksteger on Thu, 28 March 2013, 09:37:26
Will the KBT Pure with LED's continue to work if I desolder just the LED's out of the switches and leave them out?  I don't really care for the back lighting anyway and want to change out the springs and stems but don't want to have to resolder all of these little LED's back in.  I would also have to get the charge right (+) or (-).

Else I will just have to sell my Pure and also my White Keycap Race to fund another purchase of a Pure w/o LED's.

Thanks in advance.

Jeremy

Just don't damage the the pcb/trace/eyelids when desoldering. You can always solder them back in but need to know which end it + or -

The easiest way to see if you've got the (+) (-) in the right direction is a multimeter if you wanted to solder them back(not saying you do). They're relatively cheap at local shops. The board will continue to work if you remove the LEDs, yup. :)

Really? I just plug in the board and touch the leads of the LED to the solder pads on the back of the board, and see which direction lights the LED. Then I remember which way the big blade in the LED is facing and install them all in that direction.

I always use the continuity tester on my meter and see which lights the LED a small bit, or reduces the charge coming from my meter quite a bit.

Haha I've been doing this for years too. It hasn't broken anything yet.

so as an update...
I actually tried this and after the first few I was thinking my time is worth more than a new keyboard so I replaced the LEDs and soldered them back in and I'm just going to sell the board.  I will post it in the classifieds (KBT Pure orange LED with cherry black switches) once I reach my 60 posts! :)

Thanks,
Jeremy

i'm getting closer.  I actually have a crap load of keyboards that need to leave my garage and go to homes.  Many are odd mechanical. Space invader switches, old Fujitsu peerless, unicomp, and too many RD and siscor switch ones, I would just sell those on eBay, LOL
